Swish Appeal Lynx Hold On To Beat the Mystics 79-77; Should Mystics Fans Be Happy That The Team Came Back Or Angry Because Of How They Lost?

Recaps and Other Related Links

The Lynx (yes the plural form can be Lynx as well as lynxes according to Merriam Webster) have pounced on their prey so far this season in impressive fashion. This time, it was a fight for them to beat the Mystics last night (if you're in the East, but it's still earlier tonight out west). The Lynx players were definitely tested by a lesser team in the second half and even fell behind in the fourth for a bit. But they ultimately prevailed on a last second Captain Whalen putback with a second left.

I will write things from the losing team's perspective, so here's the question: Should the Mystics fans be happy that they played competitively against the best team in the league? Or should they be angry that they lost a winnable game (that they were winning in the last minutes of the game) in the last second?

Poll
How should Mystics fans feel about their team's loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday, May 30?

Swish Appeal Mystics Don't Lose To the Shock 64-61 and Some Thoughts

Game Recap

CSNWashington.com

Video of Coach Lacey's Presser

Recap from Tulsashock.net

Well, Saturday's game between the Mystics and the Shock was quite a disappointment. It's not the result, but the fact that the Mystics played very badly. For the Shock, the team doesn't have much talent, but I think that the players have a chip on their shoulders and they won't just fold mentally. This will pay off in the long run for this season, and beyond.

Here are some thoughts I have from the game yesterday which are kind of random. I'm not happy overall, and I'm sorry if I rant a bit.

Swish Appeal Tickets for Team USA Basketball Game on July 16 in Washington, DC To Be Released To The General Public on Wednesday May 30

In late February, USA Basketball announced that Team USA will play Brazil in a men's and women's doubleheader on Monday, July 16 at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. Now that the renewal period for Wizards and Mystics season tickets is essentially complete, tickets will finally be released to the public on May 30.

The event starts at 5:30 PM with the women's team playing first. The men's team will play at around 8:00 PM assuming the women's game doesn't go into overtime, etc.

Okay, no open thread yet so here it is:

Swish Appeal Opening Day Open Thread: Sparks and Storm Battle It Out In Seattle at 10 PM Eastern/7 PM Pacific

Bumped for your viewing enjoyment. Also, check out the previews for the Sparks and Storm (here and here)

Today is the season debut of the 2012 WNBA season. For some of you, the beginning of this season couldn't come soon enough. For others like me, it is an additional basketball game to tune into while watching tonight's 2nd round NBA Playoff action between the Celtics and 8th seeded Sixers (Go Philly!) and the Kobe led Lakers and KD led SuperSonics at KeyArena, ok THUNDER at Chesapeake Energy Arena!!!! (OKC! OKC! That arena really rocks the house. Arguably the best home court advantage in the NBA.). But I digress.

Tonight at 10 PM Eastern, 7 PM Pacific the Seattle Storm battles the Los Angeles Sparks at KeyArena, continuing on a long rivalry between these Western Conference powers. You can see the game on NBA TV, but if you're in LA, turn on to KDOC-TV and for Seattle turn on KONG-TV to see the game because NBA TV will probably be blacked out the broadcast there. Check your local cable/satellite/fiber TV provider for channel numbers.

Not a surprise that MLM (Mo, Lang, and Matee, not multi level marketing) made the roster. Given that Trudi Lacey wanted this team to be a veteran team as opposed to last year which went young, not a surprise that most of the older players that were brought in will make it to opening night.

I wasn't surprised that the rookies may not make the final roster at the end of the season in order to accommodate a better player, but a little surprised that one of them was cut so soon. Why even draft LaSondra in the first place if she won't make it past camp? She could have been traded for another vet who could have had a better shot at this roster! I could go on with a rant, but I'm pretty high on young players on rebuilding teams.

This year is the 15th season of Mystics basketball. One of the biggest promotions for this year is the All-Time team, where fans can select their favorite Mystics. 14 players have been selected to be voted, and fans can also select a player by write in vote. Voting starts this Saturday, on May 19.

Here are the Candidates:
Alana Beard
Vicky Bullett
Monique Currie
Stacey Dales
Lindsey Harding
Chamique Holdsclaw
Crystal Langhorne
Nikki McCray
Chasity Melvin
Coco Miller
Delisha Milton-Jones
Murriel Page
Nakia Sanford
Nikki Teasley

The team will be recognized on August 19 during the game vs. the Chicago Sky.

Note: Six of the 14 players were members of the 2010 Mystics Dream Team, and five of them played on it because Alana was out that year. Either way I will cheer my guts off for the players on the 2010 team, assuming they come to this game at all.

No surprise about the top and bottom teams on the list. But I think there are some surprises. Here they are:

1. Minnesota (flash that shiny badge Shannon!)
2. Connecticut
3. Chicago
4. Indy
5. Seattle
6. LA
7. NYC
8. Phoenix
9. DC
10. ATL
11. San Antonio
12. Tulsa

Homer Note: I guess Evans thinks Currie will keep the Mystics out of the cellar, and she makes a good point that Atlanta has lost Bales and de Souza to retirement and the Olympics respectively, but I don't think that would drop the Dream to last, or could it?

What are your takes on this preliminary list?

That's right ladies and gents. 83% of the GM's (or 10 of 12 after figuring out the math) believe the Lynx will make it two in a row for this year. In addition, all but one GM believes that Minny will also win the Western Conference. For the East, 5 GM's thought Indy will win it; 3 thought Connecticut will, and every other team had 1 GM. Yes, the Mystics got a vote in as Eastern Champs and I bet that same GM was the one who voted the Mystics as a team that would be in the playoffs. I wonder who that is.

Among players, three each thought Sparks forward Candace Parker and Lynx guard Seimone Augustus will be the 2012 MVP. Seattle guard Sue Bird won the most superlatives in this survey though, being named the best point guard, best passer, best leader, best IQ , best at making her teammates better, and best future head coach of a hoops team someday. She was tied for 2nd as the first franchise player to build around too. I think some of these same GM's just forgot to make her MVP and best three point shooter when it counts.

Among rookies, Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike is the GM's presason rookie of the year. No surprise.

To add to more Mystics homerism, Crystal Langhorne was tied for the most underrated player in the league, and was second for best post moves (behind Connecticut center Tina Charles) so I'm glad she is getting some respect league-wide.

These are fun reads and allow some homerism and friendly trash talk. Enjoy reading the survey.

This may be old news now, but the first regular season home game for the Sparks next Sunday has been delayed. This is because the 8th seeded Kings are battling the Phoenix Coyotes in the Western Conference Finals of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the Lakers and Clips also have their second round NBA playoff matchups against the Thunder and Spurs respectively. Pretty crazy that all these things would be happening at once, but they are.

While this is great for the Kings, Lakers, and Clips fanbases, if you're a Sparks fan who doesn't support either of these three teams, or a Storm fan, this may not sit well with you. Sorry. The new date for the game is next Tuesday, May 22 at 7:30 PM local time (10:30 PM Eastern). That's the reality of the WNBA, in particular with teams that don't own their arena.

From The Boss.

While renewal rates are great for the NBA and NHL teams in Monumental Red, season ticket holder sentiment is different than general fan sentiment.

Ted mentioned this at the first chalk talk this season, where he mentioned that non-season ticket holders were much more likely to tell him to gut the current Wizards team than season ticket holders who are a more patient bunch.

Here's what decided this matinee game earlier this afternoon:

1. Minny made 52.9% of its shots vs. Chicago's 38.5% field goal rate.
2. Minny had a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio for the game. Chicago's was negative. I've never seen a game when a team got that to happen. So wow!
3. Playing this game at the University of Minnesota, the alma mater of starting guard Lindsay Whalen. She had a stellar game with 9 points, 8 dimes, and 5 boards, all in 22 minutes.

The Sky's recap can be found here.

The preseason is now over for both squads where the Sky will begin regular season play against the Mystics on Saturday at 7 PM Eastern.

The Lynx begins its championship defense on Saturday at 12:30 PM Eastern against the Phoenix Mercury, at home. This game will also be on ABC so wake up early west coast fans!

Swish Appeal DC Basketcases Won't Write On The Mystics Anymore As Fans

If you're a Mystics fan and/or a Maryland women's hoops fan, then you probably read the DC Basketcases blog often. The Basketcases write great posts and are the definition of passionate and loyal women's basketball fans.

If you have noticed over the last several months or so, they haven't made many posts regarding the Washington Mystics, due to events dating back to after the magical 2010 season and the horrific 2011 season that they, and I were presented with, despite the fact that the team made many trades to retool the roster.

Well, they have broken their silence now, and I kind of expected it for some time. The Basketcases no longer will post on Mystics topics, and it is due to the indignation that they felt as Mystics fans after 15 years, and in particular over the last two.

It certainly hasn't been the best of weekends at Monumental Sports and Entertainment, the ownership group of the DC WNBA, NBA, and NHL teams. First Caps Nation is still reeling from Saturday's Round 2, Game 7 Loss to the New York Rangers at the Garden. Now, Caps Nation learned about head coach Dale Hunter's departure earlier this afternoon.

That quickly changed with the basketball teams. First Wizards guard John Wall was named to the Team USA Select team. But wait, this is a Mystics post!

The Mystics certainly didn't disappoint in their preseason home game earlier tonight. This game was decided in the 2nd and 3rd quarters as Monique Currie scored 19 for the ladies in Monumental Red, 16 at the half. Natasha Lacy added 12 points and six dimes. Lang of course was great as usual with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists. Mystics outrebounded the Sun 40-26...

Wouldn't put too much stock into it when the Sun didn't have Olympian and All Star Tina Charles in the game. Then again, the Mystics didn't have Matee Ajavon either and Olympian forward Ashja Jones played, and she dropped 17 points (but no rebounds, that's right none). But still, the game I saw today was the style of ball that Trudi Lacey wants to showcase this season. We shall see if this style can remain this consistent as the season rolls on.

UPDATE: One thing to note that's not in the box score. Mistie Bass was ejected from the game with a Flagrant 2 after she hit Michelle Snow. I didn't get a clear view at the play, but someone next to me told me that Bass smacked Snow with the back of her hand at the end of a play somewhere. I believe it was in a rebound situation or something like that, so there wasn't a fight or anything, but there was a chippy moment.

Despite the fact that the Americans made over 60% of their shots, and that six players scored 10 points or more, Geno Auriemma wasn't that pleased with the team's performance saying that "When you’ve only had one practice with the team and this is our first game, it’s not going to look great."

From the box score, Team USA had a total of 16 assists, but also gave up 21 turnovers. Granted, the Chinese aren't as good as the Americans, but in the long run, teams don't win too many games with a negative assist to turnover ratio.

Neither team attempted too many or too few threes (China with 11, USA with 12) which are at the FIBA length at 22 feet and 1.74 inches vs the WNBA length at 20 feet and 6.25 inches. I don't know if it was because the Americans in particular were just able to score down low (because it looks like they had their way from the stat sheet), or if it's because the women really are having problems from shooting at the further length. Doesn't look like the latter, when both teams shot efficiently from the FIBA length three, and I assume this is the case in Euroleague too.

This game last night wasn't televised or streamed as far as I know, I would love to see if anyone was at this game in Emerald City and could provide more insight.

13 of the Shock's 14 players score in the game and two players, Glory Johnson and Riquna Williams scored 10 each to lead Tulsa.

Seattle outshot Tulsa 47 to 44%, but the Storm gave up 35 TO's to the Shock's 19 TO's. The Storm had 10 assists while the Shock had 14 assists. Basically this is where the game was decided.

For Seattle, Victoria Dunlap led all scorers with 13 points, and also grabbed 5 boards and dished 2 assists. As you probably know, Lauren Jackson isn't with the team now due to her commitment to Team Australia, and Sue Bird is with Team USA preparing for tomorrow's contest vs. China at KeyArena.

Still for the Shock, this is a good win and wins are contagious.

Swish Appeal I have extra Mystics vs. Storm game tickets and they are available if you want them.

I have eight extra lower level tickets for the Mystics game against the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, June 26 at 7 PM that I would like to give away to the first folks who want to claim them. The game is in Verizon Center in Washington, DC.

I know this is a weekday game, that is still over a month away, but the Mystics will be playing a popular team, and it's summer vacation time for the kiddies. Still I'm doing this now so anyone who takes them can plan ahead. Washington is the best city to visit in the US of A, hands down. I lived here for my entire life and I still love touring the area. If someone wants to throw the Nats at me as a reason why he or she doesn't want to go (yes, I know the Nats are doing great this season so far and I want to see them do real well this year by the way), they are playing the Rockies in Denver that night.

According to the AP, Glen Taylor, owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx, is looking for a minority partner who would eventually be his successor. This transition would be along the lines of the Wizards/Mystics/Capitals ownership transition from Abe Pollin to Ted Leonsis which took place from 1999 to 2010.

Obviously, the biggest asset in this ownership transition would be the Timberwolves NBA team, and like many other articles of this type, the Lynx isn't even mentioned, but I'd say that it's safe to assume that they're on sale with the Wolves. What would do you think or would like to see with the ownership situation of the Lynx basketball team?

Bullets Forever Charlotte Lowers Nosebleed Season Ticket Prices to $1/game With The Number 1 Draft Pick: What Does It Mean For the Wizards?

I just saw that the Charlotte Bobcats are selling 500 of their nosebleed season tickets at a yet to be determined price, depending on the draft lottery. If the Cats pick 1st, those seats are $1 a seat for 43 games (41 regular season; 2 preseason), if they pick 2nd, it's $2 a seat. In essence, seats won't cost more than $4 a seat.

I thought it was too good to be true, even for a bad team, but it's true. See here.

Poll
Given what the Charlotte Bobcats did to try to attract new season ticket holders, should the Washington Wizards cut prices further as well due to the team's bad performance?
Yes, many if not most Wiz games will sell for $5 a seat at the most in the upper level.

No, season tickets include a lot more value than just games.

Bullets Forever The Washington Wizards Have The Foundation For A Great In-Game Experience for 2012-2013

Last season, I wrote a post regarding the in-game experience for the 2010-2011 season and with some things I'd like to see for what was last season. This post follows up on that.

I know that a large part of the basketball game experience is the basketball, and to some of you that really is the only thing that matters. I get that and I agree that the on court product is ultimately why season ticket holders pay to watch these games. However, for many fans, especially either children, or first time and casual fans also tend to take this into account in their game watching. Even I take this into account as pluses to the game itself because these games are events as well..

Poll
How do you rate the in-game experience for the Wizards during the 2011-2012 NBA season, aside from the basketball?

Bullets Forever Would It Have Been Better for the Wizards If the 2011-2012 Season Was Cancelled?

Ted Leonsis has drawn many parallels between the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards whenever he reassures the Wizards fanbase that he has overseen a rebuild before and many of the same elements in our rebuild was also in the Capitals' rebuild. For example, the Wizards have John Wall as a number one pick, the Caps have Alex Ovechkin. The Wizards are rebuilding through a young core, the Caps did too. The Wizards are enduring multiple years of losing, and the Caps did as well to get to where they are now as a perennial playoff team with Cup potential. One crucial difference between our rebuild and the Caps rebuild is the fact that Wall dealt with a lockout season that ultimately resulted in a shortened season, while Ovie had an entire season cancelled (The season before his rookie year), where he stayed with Moscow Dynamo, his Russian team.

I don't like rehashing the arguments we had about the collective bargaining agreement, etc., but after watching this season unfold the way it did, I wonder if playing this shortened season hurt the Wizards' long term rebuilding strategy solely from the basketball perspective. Obviously, the Wizards and the NBA benefit when games are played because of the money, but the basketball product this year is what I will talk about and that only.

Poll
Is the Washington Wizards rebuild better off with the team playing at all in the 2011-2012 season?
Yes, the Wizards needed to play this season so we can see what we have.
51 votes
No, playing this season set us back due to the shortened season.

We are growing our season ticket holder base quite rapidly.

We will soon have the lower bowl sold out.

I believe we will have many sell outs in the next season and I am hopeful that our fans will order their tickets now for next season.

From Ted's blog.

I agree that there are a lot of new STH's because like a third of the guys I see with their lanyards on are "Rookie STH's." However, selling seats, and actually getting butts in them are two different things and I want to see more of the latter, because this year has been pretty tough, and I like going to games.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a public trust with the greatest fans in the world. We have fallen short of everyone's expectations, and for that we are sorry. We take full responsibility for what happens on the ice, and we make no excuses. The way this year ended was unacceptable. Results are the only measure of success in sports and the results speak for themselves.

Letter from Larry Tanenbaum, the Chairman of Maple Leaf Sports, which operates the Maple Leafs and the Raptors. Via the Maple Leaf's website.

I know this isn't a Wizards related quote, but do you think Ted should have to write an I'm sorry letter for the Caps performance this year if they lose in the first round? Also, do you think he should write one this year for the Wizards, given that we were supposed to see some progress and we didn't for much, if not most of the season? He did write a letter to some Mystics season ticket holder's for last year's 6-28 record.

Swish Appeal Thoughts from Washington Mystics Season Ticket Holder Event on March 20, 2012: Sheila Johnson and Greg Bibb Address the Fans

I came back from another Mystics event at Verizon Center earlier today (if you're in the west coast, otherwise it's last night) at the Dewar's Club, headlined by the appearances of team president and Monumental Sports Vice Chair Sheila Johnson and Mystics COO Greg Bibb.

By chance, there was a basketball game actually at the Phone Booth, where the Abe Pollin City Title Games (both boys and girls) held between the DCIAA (DC Public Schools Athletic Association) and WCAC (a DC area Catholic school league).

Today, we also had two extra people speak to fans. One was Trudi Lacey, the Head Coach and GM, so I wasn't surprised that she would speak. The surprise guest was WNBA President Laurel Richie. Most of the event was a structured Q and A moderated by Christy Winters-Scott, the Mystics' color analyst whenever there's a game at Verizon Center.

*NOTE*

I recorded the event as an audio file and you can access it right here. This file is 50 minutes long, but I will try to note some of the more interesting comments and about when they come up if I can.

After five years, it appears that Coach G will leave Austin, and I'm not surprised if it's under some pressure because rival schools like Baylor and A&M have really made strides on the national scene, while the Longhorns never made it past the second round of the tournament (her first year, back in 2008).

Coach G will be best known as the Duke women's basketball coach, where the Devils made four Final Four appearances, and two national championship game appearances in 1999 and 2006 when they lost to Purdue and Maryland respectively.
