OFFTOP 2/12/09: Looking Back Edition

With the all but inevitable signing of Junior coming I thought an interesting topic for today would be nostalgia. Let's think of things that used to be great, or just things we miss that we wish would come back. As an example, remember that feeling when you went to bed the night before Christmas when you were still young enough to believe in Santa? Will anything in our adult lives ever compare to that feeling?

A new topic is discovering something long after you have had it, or long after others have moved on. A few of my examples would be the Harry Potter books. I purposefully avoided them until the fifth book was about to be released because I thought the people obsessed with them were ridiculous. Finally I caved and cracked open book, turns out I was the ridiculous one depriving myself of a fantastic story.

Similarly I do this with music. I loved the song Lazy Eye by the Silversun Pickups. I bought the album it is on just to listen to it. Well months later I decided to give the rest of the album a spin and discovered I loved them. I have been listening to it at least once a day all week.

So again, today's theme is nostalgia or new discoveries. With the differences in age we have here in the LL Community, I think some interesting things could come up.

In honor of the QC Fanpost I would like to take this opportunity to give a New Orleans tradition a try. Dr. Bob is a local artist famous for his Be Nice Or Leave signs intended to be hung above the entry ways of businesses and homes. They are actually pretty cool and have become a bit of a local phenomenon.

This coming weekend is Valentine's day. In honor of that I present the following Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles strip. Courtesy of neilswaab.com.

Also, this passage from fmylife.com sums up most of the V Days in my life.

Today, I got an email from the local D&D meet up group that the next meeting will be on Feb. 14th. I don't know what is more sad... that the group is meeting on valentines day or that I have nothing better to do but go. FML

Anyone have anything outside the norm planned for this weekend?

Also, and this is just to make y'all's (double contraction for the win) day a little bit brighter, here is the current weather at my location:

ENI Base Camp Weather - Oliktok Point, AK

41 below is cold, cold, cold.

With wicked cold temperatures around the US I'm guessing more people will be staying at home this weekend. I'll generate a few topics but feel free to come up with whatever crazy topic you can. I like music topics so here we go.

What song would you like to see covered by a particular band and why?

What classic album, if released today, would still be just as popular now as it was then?

Best and Worst live concert you have attended.

Favorite album to pop in and listen to in the dark.

That one song that no matter how bad a mood you are, will always make you smile?

I guess that is enough from me. Enjoy your weekend y'all.

I don't really have any topics so lets just do what we always do: Argue about music and/or movies.

Best film of 08.

Best Song of 08.

Thing you are most looking forward to in 09.

Person most in need of a junk punch.

Does anyone else have a job that finds them routinely asking themselves what the hell am I doing here?

Why don't more people like Jimmy Eat World? Did In the Middle burn them out?

EDIT: One more, anyone else have a ridiculous amount of music they had to upgrade in their iTunes library for the DRM removal/iTunes Plus upgrade? I am still downloading two days later.

My job got even shittier last night. My camp is cutting back on their rooms and I know have to share my room with another day worker. What this means is that rather than having an opposite who sleeps while I am working and vice versa, we literally share a room and sleep at the same time. It sucks, but hopefully it is just for a few days. At least he is someone I know.

No discusion topics really, just wanted a forum for those who get a little free time this weekend to pop in and let us know what's up.

We rarely get enough posts in these things to warrant one for both Saturday and Sunday, so here is one for both.

Topics:

If you spent three weeks in a dry environment like I am doing right now, what is the first bit to alcahol you choose to touch your lips?

Judd Apatow movies: Hilarious or tired?

Favorite magazine or periodical.

Who is NOT rooting for the Rays this Postseason?

If you had to choose, would you rather be blind or deaf?

If a miracle happened and the US won the World Cup, would we finally see that mythical day they keep talking about where America decides Soccer is cool?

Greatest film of all time to be ruined by it's sequel(s).

Anything else you wanna bring up- we aint picky!

The Thin Line Between Love and Hate

I have a question that I wanted to get a response to. At what point in your role a fan of a particular team does your blind love turn into unmitigated hate? Is there an actual scale involved? I ask this because I am now so literally disgusted by the Mariners that I have stopped watching games because when I do I root for them to lose. I don't like the way that makes me feel.

I was cautiously optimistic when Bavasi was fired, but even that has left me. The same people who thought Bill was the answer in the first place are still in charge of hiring his replacement. What proof do we have that have learned anything from experience?

I guess my question is thus: How many of you are still optimistic about the future of this team? How many of you are like me, wholly resigned that your team sucks and it isn't going to change in the forseeable future?

Various topics I can yammer along at myself with.

1. Why don't I tell my employers to let me go home now, 'cause surely this cabin fever will lead to someone's death.

2. I know I heve been in Prudhoe Bay too long when housekeepers who were not atractive at all when I got here start to get pretty. How do you know when you have been somewhere too long?

3. Now that the Greater Seattle Area no longer has a basketball team to cheer for, why don't you jump onto the Hornets bandwagon?

4. Why don't the Mariners put a minor league affiliate in Anchorage?

5. In the event of a zombie apocalypse, where will you go and what will be your weapon of choice. Remember, you have to destroy the brain.
