Pac-10 notes

What does college football look like out here on the left coast?  Sometimes the Pac-10 feels like a a world away from the big boys in the Big 12, Big 10, and most everyone in the SEC.  With USC falling from the throne, how does this conference look from a Bills fan's prospective?

I know norcalianglesfan has mentioned red-hot Jim Harbaugh as an outside coach prospect, but it looks like The Cardinal is going to lock him down.  Good for them.  Speaking of Stanford (and another of norcali's favorites)...could the Bills wait for 6' 4' 235 lb. freshman QB  Andrew Luck?  He, so far, is one of the most eye-catching NFL caliber prospects. (I know...they can't wait.)

Is Luck the best Pac-10 QB?  That would be my guess, but many around here have preferance for WA QB Jake Locker.  I can see why, because Jake has the physical gifts to be a franchise player.  But watching him play gives me a slight hesitation.   I would be uneasy if the Bills traded up to get him, or passed up a stud OT or LB.  Another bright spot on that Washington team is Jermaine Kearse.  He is a skilled WR who I would love to see in a Bills uniform, but I don't see it happening.   The Huskies were abused by the Beavers on Saturday.

The Beavers are #19 in the BCS today, and it is possible that the Oregon-Oregon State game is played for a Rose Bowl berth, which (i think) would be the first time that has happened.

Oregon produced Jarius Byrd, and has a prospect in LeGarrette Blount and Walter Thurmond (CB,)  but nothing too high on the Bills priority list right now.  Spencer Paysinger is a great but undersized LB, and Casey Matthews is from that Matthews family, but has not proved enough yet for any further consideration.

(Not that the Bills are going to draft a saftey in the first two rounds next year, but) does USC's three losses (including the two worst losses under Pete Carrol) devalue Taylor Mays?  Dispite the collapse, USC will send plenty of players to the NFL next spring, and some may be considered by Buffalo...possibly OT Charles Brown, C Kris O'Dowd, and DE Everson Griffen.  A few others fall into contention in positions of low priority.

UCLA offers a talented DT in Brian Price who might be a serious prospect for a Bills interior that could use a bright spot for the future.

Rounding out this post, Cal has Javid Best, Arizona State has a nice 3-4 LB in Dexter Davis, and one of the best big, fast, pass-catching TEs is in Arizona: Rob Gronkowski.  None of these guys are going to looked at as must have by Buffalo, but will be drafted by someone.

(Washington State should be in the WAC, maybe replaced by Boise St?  Time may tell...)

I need me some Lynch

Our man Ryan Fitzpatric gets this week's honor of handing off to some of the raddest running backs in the league.

I would like to propose a poem to Marshawn Lynch:

Something is itching in this skin

I need to feel the velvety smooth touch of the goal line on my nose or toes

I need a run for fifty yards

I need a hundred yard game

You dig

I need the call

What is in the water? This is sad... the team is sad, the fans are making it worse.

From Football Outsiders:

"I'm also worried about the Eagles new tight end, Donovan McNabb. That's right, McNabb is about to follow on the heels of L.J. Smith, meaning he will have to learn to drop his own passes. "I'll be a receiver. I might be a tight end," McNabb said of his role in Vick's Grateful Dog packages. "You never know where I'll be." Picture it now: Eagles versus Giants, November 1. The Eagles go Wildcat, with Vick at quarterback, Brian Westbrook at running back, McNabb at tight end with Osi Umenyiora over him. Umenyiora throws McNabb to the ground. Westbrook bravely tries to block him but pulls a variety of muscles. Vick runs in circles to escape, then gets driven headfirst into the turf. Three injured Eagles on one play, the franchise kaput, Jason Peters scratching his butt the whole time. Paranoid fantasy? Vision of the future?"

"Ellis Lankster, Cornerback, Bills

In a Nutshell: The Bills' seventh-round pick, a 5-foot-9 cornerback who intercepted three passes and recorded 2.5 sacks at West Virginia in 2008. He picked off two passes in the fourth quarter against the Bears on Friday.

Also Known For: Stealing a laptop in 2007. Lankster and a teammate left a college party in 2007 with a Dell laptop. Police pulled them over a few minutes later outside a McDonald's. The teammate was the perp, but Lankster also earned a three-game suspension. Some guys see free wifi and get carried away.

He'll Make the Team Because: Dick Jauron likes his toughness, and several Bills defensive backs have gotten hurt in camp. Lankster also has experience as a return man.

He Won't Make the Team Because: Leodis McKelvin, Terrence McGee, Ashton Youboty, Drayton Florence, and a few others are ahead of him on the depth chart.

Bold Prediction: Lankston earns one of the final roster spots, then moves up the depth chart slowly as the Bills let their other cornerbacks leave as free agents."

Via NFL.com, Jimbo welcomes Smith to the Hall of fame, and mentions Bruce's sweet side.

I like the throwbacks more, but I can't agree with the people who insist the new uniforms are "hideous."

Someone has an injury obsession. :)

Sounds like a sore groin and a blister on his hand. I had to chuckle when I read this. I love Trent.

10 points! Come on, it should be more like 9.5. Bills get no respect. Oh, well. If you like to fly under the radar, you like this spread.
