Don't miss the Crimson White's special April Fool's edition http://cw.ua.edu/ Print edition should be on the website soon.
For the first time in its seven-year history, The University of Alabama ice hockey team has secured a spot in the national championship tournament of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Alabama's club hockey team competes in the Division III of the ACHA along with 10 other SEC schools and after defeating Richmond in the South Regionals over the weekend, the "Frozen Tide" will head to Atlantic City, N.J. next month to compete for its first national title.
Please do not waste your money and purchase the "official" DVD recording of the BCS Championship game. As you will see from Amazon reviews (including my own) everyone who has seen it agrees the quality of the video is horrendous and it is virtually unwatchable. This is such a shame since this is the only DVD recording of the game that will be available. Buy the HD version on iTunes instead.
Don't miss this Academy Award nominated documentary filmed in my town. Starts showing this Friday.
Alabama’s men’s basketball coach, Anthony Grant, is a proud to support the Sweet Home Fund by participating in Infiniti’s ongoing partnership with the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the NCAA® and ESPN in the "Infiniti Coaches’ Charity Challenge." Next Sunday I turn 51. In my time I have seen a lot of Alabama football history, mostly on television. But tomorrow morning I am headed to New Orleans with my son, a UA sophomore. Watching this gave me chills. Roll Tide!
"Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, the architect of the Crimson Tide's top-rated defense, has withdrawn from consideration for Southern Mississippi's head coaching vacancy after interviewing with Golden Eagles officials in Atlanta on Thursday, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Friday night."
Deja vu all over again? A previous national championship game that was a rematch from the regular season. Also played in New Orleans. The regular season loser earned its redemption by an overwhelming victory to finish No. 1.
Although the news outlets don't report a reason for the suspension yet, the rumor on the internets and twitterverse is that he tested positive for marijuana.
As I posted earlier, Barrett Jones has been awarded the 2011 Wuerffel Trophy. I wanted to post this earlier interview with him as well that shows what an awesome young man he is.
The award, named after former Fort Walton Beach and Florida Gator standout, Danny Wuerffel, is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player that best combines exemplary community service with academic and athletic achievement. Jones, an accounting major who graduated in August with a 4.0 GPA, is now working towards a masters in accounting. The All-SEC lineman is extremely active in the community as well. Jones has made two mission trips to Haiti to help people struggling with daily life and to help build a school and orphanage. He has actively participated in tornado cleanup in Tuscaloosa and worked with countless other community organizations in his time at Alabama.
Artist Caleb O'Connor's murals depicting Tuscaloosa history were moved into the new federal courthouse today. Here's one you might partcularly like. The rest can be viewed on his website: http://www.caleboconnor.com/caleb/
He is currently in the lead. Let's keep it that way.
UA handed Auburn the most lopsided loss in the 18-year history of the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive. Alabama fans and students collected 237,079 pounds of food for the West Alabama Food Bank, while Auburn collected 134,102 pounds of food for the East Alabama Food Bank. Hopefully a good omen of things to come!
Houston Nutt goes all gotterdamerung. Randall Mackey and Jeff Scott both out for LSU game.
Press conference at 2 p.m. to discuss both the future of Coach Houston Nutt and Athletic Director Peete Boone.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Starting kicker already injured, other kicker got injured in pre-game practice. So an hour before kickoff they called the scout team kicker who was on the couch at the frat house. They actually gave him a breathalyzer test before he suited up. I posted this because I thought it was particularly interesting in light of yesterday's debacle..
"As you begin the month, you'll be feeling popular and in demand. If your birthday falls on or near the just-seen new moon, October 26, in Scorpio, you will be doubly fortunate. That new moon had the kind of energy you could direct in any way you pleased, which is unusual. (I will admit that business and money success was especially strong.) In early November, it's time for you, no matter when your birthday happens to fall, to take a step large or small toward achieving a dream dear to your heart. That October 26 new moon is powerful, for it had the direct support from Pluto, your ruler, proving as you enter November, that there will be no mountain too high to scale, nor any river too wide to transverse. Think big - the universe is listening and will mobilize to help you."
A view of ourselves from the other side of the fence. Since I have connections to both Bama and Vandy this was my favorite quote: "Alabama is an easy team to hate for one simple reason: they win. They've won a lot, and it seems like they will continue to win. Nobody hates Vanderbilt (well, maybe Louisville, who has to envy Vandy's sweet gig while they are constantly fighting for their survival)."
Alabama's Carson Tinker -- a survivor of the April 27 tornado that killed 51 people in and around Tuscaloosa, including his girlfriend -- is the weekly nominee for the 2011 Discover Orange Bowl/FWAA Courage Award.
