New stadium for the Falcons? Not so fast, Sparky...
Very informative article focusing on the economics of new stadiums and the problems other cities have had paying for them. Includes the notable passage "...fans have seen sharp increases in ticket prices after new stadiums have been built."
Yet another article, centered more on ticket prices, appears here in today's AJC.
No open-air stadium for the Falcons
The new plan involves demolishing the GA Dome & building a new retractable roof stadium, for a cool billion $.
Anyone have a 1971 Falcons program?
Greetings gents, I'm hoping that someone here could be so kind as to provide me with the date of the Falcons' exhibition game vs. Kansas City in 1971, 40 years ago this month I believe. That date happens to be a significant anniversary for me, and I'll be jiggered if I can't find it anywhere online! Preseason game schedules & results for that year seem to be about the only thing that is nonexistent on the Inter-Webs.
If anyone has an old Falcons' program from 1971, I'm sure the info would be in there. The only other way to find out (that I can think of) is to find a public library with a newspaper or microfilm archive. Unfortunately, I can't freakin' drive for a few weeks, until after the anniversary passes.
Thanks in advance for any help you might provide. As a former frequent poster, I know what a great knowledge repository exists here on The Falcoholic. Here's to you, and to our shared hope that our beloved Falcons are continuing to move toward bigger and better things (sure looks that way). Cheers!

ATL weather's effects on Falcons' game prep
If you don't live in Atlanta, consider yourself lucky this day. With icy roads and 3+ inches of snow, it's a horrible day to have to travel here. The forecast around ATL is quite grim for the next 5 days and the local newsies are begging people not to drive. The interstates here are littered with blockages.
This has to affect the Falcons' prep for Sunday's game, doesn't it? ATL doesn't have the infrastructure to deal with ice & snow, like Green Bay surely does. Lawdy, I hope there are no travel issues for 70K fans on Saturday.
Does this translate into a preparation advantage for the Packers? I'm just idly wondering since I can't GO ANYWHERE today!

Atlanta Falcons Midseason Report Card: Defensive Edition
Here's some Falcons media love to brighten your day.
The Falcons are WAY too dependent on Roddy White
Do you often awaken with heart pounding, drenched in a cold sweat, after nightmares that Roddy is somehow lost to our offense? Of course you do, and for good reason! The Falcons’ helpless dependence on #84 to anchor their passing game is the stuff bad dreams are made of. Our amazing Mr. White has accounted for just under HALF of the Falcons’ passing yardage this year. Looky how that compares to his NFC peers at WR…

How did you become a Falcons fan?
Any of you guys care to share their personal story of when & how you became a Falcons fan? Someone (Adam?) brought up this topic last year, and it was great fun to see how many different and unexpected ways we Falcoholics came to love our team. Not to go off topic too much, but I know I could use a little distraction right now. Lots of newer fans around here this year, too. Cheers, gents!

Falcons' popularity at an all time high this year
Our Birds are the 10th most popular team in the NFL according to this Harris poll. Previous high was 18th after our Super Bowl year. Lots of charts here; page 4 is the heart of it all.
Why is NORM VAN BROCKLIN still a record holder?
Interesting P-F-R article about why THE DUTCHMAN still holds the single-game passing record (554 yards) after nearly 60 years. The man was one hell of a QB, too bad he's not always remembered that way.
Is "Icing the Kicker" an effective tactic?
Very nice AJC article, including history of the "icing" trend and some possibly surprising statistics. Our old friend Dan Reeves even weighs in. Good readin'.
Falcons wearing 1966 throwback unis on Sunday
Loved those black jerseys & red helmets! Now all we need is Norm Van Brocklin chain-smoking on the sidelines.

Packers sign Dmitri Nance off Falcons' Practice Squad
Too bad we didn't get a chance to see more of him as a Falcon. Can't blame the guy for wanting to go where he can get more playing time. Good luck to the Rushin' Russian.
Falcons building with the draft
Interesting article showing how many drafted players are on each NFL team's roster. The Falcons are 8th with 31 draftees.

Problems viewing Fox football on standard TV
I live in the metro ATL area, and have a standard definition DISH Network receiver and standard TV (which has worked fine in seasons past). Fox has apparently changed its football broadcast protocol for 2010. The Fox football announcers say that from now on, people should see black bars at the top & bottom of a SDTV setup, if I understand correctly.
Instead, I have no black bars (fullscreen), and the left & right sides of the image are cropped. Consequently, I'm missing little things like, oh, ONE TEAM'S SCORE at the far left of the screen!
I don't know if this is an issue with 1) the ATL Fox affiliate, 2) DISH Network, or 3) where I finally have to get with the 21st Century and get myself a HDTV setup.
I can't seem to find any authoritative, final word on the Internet. Before I start making calls to Fox ATL and DISH Network (and get possibly slanted or inaccurate info), I would appreciate any enlightenment that my fellow Falcoholics might be able to offer.
There must be plenty of other people out there with the same problem I have! Your learned thoughts will edumacate not only me, but many of your fellow Falcons fans as well. Thanks, and here's to good Falcons viewing in 2010. Cheers!

Turner says he's 90 percent recovered. WTF?
When Michael Turner says he's 90% back from the high ankle sprain, it makes me wonder where he would be if the Falcons hadn't made the monumentally foolish decision to rush him back (and aggravate the injury) last year.
Though I feel positive about the team's prospects for 2010, I have a feeling that #33 won't be 100% when training camp starts. Will someone remind the coaching staff that we need him healthy to be successful? Please?
Free Agency and the Falcons
Check out this informative AJC article about how the current CBA negotiations affect Free Agency, and the Falcons players impacted. A few comments from Comrade TD on the FA situation, as well.

Falcons' disturbing attitude toward Ryan playing Sunday?
I hope I'm overreacting, but when I saw Smitty's quote, "Our mind-set is to try to get him back as soon as we can", I didn't like it one bit. Judge for yourselves.
