Windy City Gridiron Guys I hope we draft

With the NFL draft coming up this weekend (well for the Bears it starts on the weekend). I hope we really can grab some late round talent primarily these guys that can fill in some holes. ( I did steal the BIOs from yahoo)

CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Indiana (Pa) - He may have the most unpronounceable cornerback monicker since Nnamdi Asomugha(notes), but Owusu-Ansah's is a name worth learning - it means "Born on Sunday" in Ghana, which works for his future profession. At 6-foot-0 and 207 pounds, he played cornerback and safety in college, toughed it out through a shoulder injury in 2009, and has matching man and zone cover skills. The question is how quickly he'll get up to speed with better NFL receivers running more complex routes, but those who have seen Owusu-Ansah's game tape don't doubt his raw potential. He's also one of the NCAA's best return men.

Projected Round: 2-4

probably could convert him to a safety...see DM

OT Tony Washington, Abilene Christian - Though he went through college with no off-field incidents, Washington's conviction as a sex offender in high school (the details of which can be found here) will put some NFL teams off. Still, Abilene Christian has been a hotbed of NFL talent in recent years, and Washington may be another gem. Once teams have done their due diligence, the next step will be to overcome Washington's relative lack of experience blocking near-elite defenders after only two seasons at ACU (he spent the two years previous in junior college). But the raw ability is there, and worth drafting.

Projected Round: 3-FA

gives us a little depth at OT.

who else do you guys think we should draft in the late rounds of this years NFL Draft.

Windy City Gridiron 2010 Bears- They are NOT who you thought they were!!

With the Recent hiring of Martz as our O- Coordinator for the 2010 season, our beloved bears are not the same team. Come to think of it, I can't even think of a Bears Team to compare what is very likely to happen in the 2010 season. Our claim to fame is get off the bus running and a solid defense that packs a punch and seals off the victory- or in the case of 2006 game vs. Dennis Green's Cardinals, win the game for us.

Martz's Offenses have been dubbed the greatest show on turf not because of an insane talent development but because of his scheme that prayed on then the 4-3 base defense possibly the cover 2, it has been too many years for me to really remember what scheme has been run at what point in time. He uses essentially a spread offense, using 4 and 5 wide receiver sets. While this is effective in getting mismatches it is also very brutal to the health of the quarterback since he has to rely on 5 lineman alone to block everything the defense is coming with. With our offensive line that really struggled last year in the run block, this doesnt sound like too big of a problem, and with a lot of teams switching to the 3-4 base defense we will get our 3/4/5 guys matched up against linebackers or safeties. With the shear speed of Hester/Knox this actually sounds dangerous. The big downside is that our offensive line is very middle of the road and will need to improve greatly in order to keep Cutler happy, healthy, and in the game. Forte is not a great blocking back. Is is a good running back and a good receiving back. Look for him to run out of the gun, or in a singleback set and catch a lot of balls on swing passes.

I actually started this article trying to put a negative spin on the hiring of Martz and I ended up getting myself so excited about the prospect of the Bears being the greatest show on natural grass (we don't like or need that AstroTurf on soldier field). I mean just the prospect of seeing our 3 Wide sets. Hester,Bennett, Knox and Olsen with Forte as the back and our 4 Wide sets being Hester, Bennett, Knox, DA and Forte and 5 Wide being Hester, Bennett, Knox, DA, Forte/Olsen has me foaming at the mouth.. I mean we will have two guys with insane speed two guys with great hands and then Forte just an all around stud. This could be a really impressive season for Cutler.

However, Getting off the bus running is now a thing of the past- well at least for this year...If it turns out to be another 7-9 or 9-7 season like the three there will be an entire coaching staff renovation and maybe we coax Cowher out of retirement and then we go back to the BEARS WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!

on a side note..i wouldnt mind Dennis Green as a coach in some form or fashion...He would be fun to watch on the sideline or watch youtube videos/press talks.

Windy City Gridiron for all that call for DA

Please realize that he failed to crack the starting line up yet again. who cares if he is huge if he cant produce in training camp and or preseason he deserves a spot on the bench. there is no need to set our wr progression on fairly young players as it is back any further. if anything start evaluating talent on the defensive side of the ball and plug any guy in on the oline to see if he can actually provide pass protection. dare i say Izzy at LT? haha maybe LG would be better.

Could move Kreutz to LG Beekman to C Williams to LT O-man to RT and keep old garza at RG just to see how things work out.

Windy City Gridiron A Tuesday Morning Rant

Alright as the title sounds I am going to rant about some of the nonsense I have recently read on WCG that really "grinds my gears" to quote Family Guy.

Trade Devin Hester/Move him back to punts and kickoffs issue

Ok seriously??? Ever hear of Daniel Manning Syndrome? First of all he is our leading WR this year and by comparison in the league doing very very well, is he a no. 1 WR? probably not but he is OUR no.1 WR and that is good enough for me. He was electric in the return game as a rookie and a 2nd year guy but even if he was a full time returner this year things would still suck. Jay Cutler overthrew 3 TD passes on sunday alone field position wouldnt have caused him to throw them correctly. Teams quit kicking to him for a reason they didnt want to give up 7 points. We have lost a lot of talent on the special teams side of the ball due to the free agency. and the not being able to use the wedge has really hurt as well. so right now i am taking a lovie smith stance ' Devin is our no.1 wideout, and he is going to stay our no.1 wideout."

Trade Tommie Harris

I could see this benefiting and really hurting the team at the same time. We could get some draft picks but we would create a big whole in our defensive line that may or may not get filled.

Guys its just a football season so we dont make play offs this year. so we dont go to the superbowl. We still have Jay Cutler who will lead our offense like Brian Urlacher will/has lead our Defense over the years.

Windy City Gridiron Chiefs release RB Johnson and what it could mean for the Bears

Let's face it, our anemic running game and injuries to 3 of our 4 runningbacks is terrible. we are 28th in the run for ypg, 11th for passing yds and 19th in total offense. We could use a strong powerback to relieve forte. We did use two back in previous years one as a speed outside rusher and one as a powerback. this may help out our team if we gave him a year contract. it really cant hurt our team since i believe we have lost jones for the season, AP (the awesome one)  for 2 or 3 more weeks, and wolfe for 2-4 weeks at least. Yes he has some problems with being a good role model but a year (or half of one) really cant hurt us. what do you guys think?

my stats came off the nfl.com page

Johnson is a 2 time pro bowl back with 5996 yds, 55 Rush TDs, 1640s rec yards and 6 TDs. I would probably throw an offer out to him if i were JA. but then again i would have never drafted grossman either haha

Windy City Gridiron notes from an upset fan about todays game

I saw some good things but a lot of bad things about this weeks game against Atlanta. We really shot ourselves in the foot on that last drive with all the penalties.  I honestly don't understand why Jay was not on par with our WR crew this week. Every time he threw the ball he seemed to over throw or throw the ball behind the wideout. I honestly dont know what has happened to our running game this season. We came in with Greg Olsen and Matt Forte predicted to have great years and they have really underperformed this season so far. Yes they have had a good play here and there but mainly poor play. Losing the heart of our Defense really blows as a lot of botched assignments can be contributed to bad lining up, typically a job for Urlacher in the case of an audible and no huddle offense. Our secondary hasnt looked as bad as everybody predicted. Yeah we gave up some plays but it has been better than i thought it was going to be. Not really sure what is wrong with our offensive line but it looked quite poor tonight against the falcon defense. I will admit i have a man crush on Johnny Knox as he has really shocked me this season as a rookie wideout that has hit the 4 game streak with 4 TDs and is the latest rookie to do it since the late great Walter Payton.

4-2 puts on in a tie with Green bay now but they have the advantage of beating us in week 1.  next two games should be fairly easy (bengals/browns) so we should go into mid season at 6-2 record if all goes well. not bad but our loss this week is really disappointing

Windy City Gridiron Urlacher Done for the season/Notes from Games

Saw it on ESPN this morning and I wanted to cry. With Pisa down for probably a month with his two injuries we are dangerously thin at Linebacker now. We do have Hunter/Roach in to fill in for those guys but if one of them go down we only have Jamar Williams left.  Then ESPN started quoting stats from when Urlacher went down in 2004 and we went 0-7 the only thing i have to say now is THANK GOD FOR DETROIT. With them in our division we will win at least two games. I dont want to be a downer but I can not see us winning the division with the power house Defense that greenbay showed up with last night and the always scary AP.

other notes from ESPN quote we maybe contacting Derrick Brooks for new starter since he was drafted by JA and coached by Smith. Albeit not a bad move but it wont help us in the long term.

We, as an organization, need to find a late round rookie with some talent and make him learn from Urlacher. Urlacher doesnt have too many more seasons left and we really need to start thinking about the future. Maybe it is time for Marcus Freeman to start learning a new position.

Our Secondary didnt look too bad except on the last TD drive. but our WRs showed their inexpiernce and bad judgement calls. i think we will be ok later on once we really start playing as a team instead of a bunch players. Johnny Knox really impressed me with his speed and his routes. I think he will be the steal of the draft. I was impressed with our secondary's play..but not our OLINE they seemed to open up the flood gates on Cutler so many times. our running game was terrible too, mainly the oline's fault but still bad. i truely hope we can take what we learned from this week and learn from it so in the rest of the season we dont make the same mistakes..

anybody heard about Dez/McBride's injuries yet?

Windy City Gridiron A lot of nonsense

Can you believe this? I couldnt believe it..I have no problem with Vick returning to the NFL but why in the world would the bears sign him? If i start seeing the wildcat formation in Chi-town i think ill just go cut my wrists..keep that crap out of the nfl and in college. the option stuff is not what call good quarterbacking. it is simply glorified running backs with decent arms. Granted Vick has a good arm, he doesnt have the best accuracy. The bears have a record of getting rid of problem ridded players. I could see Vick playing at several other teams just not as a bear. Maybe as a viking if Brett-the drama queen-Farve would ever decide on what to do. Though my personal opinion is he is coming back and will be a viking in 2 days.

Vick to the 'skins or raiders very probable. Vick to the browns would be funny. Vick to the niners is possible. Cant really see the pats taking him. St. Louis maybe? Texans? Seattle? maybe even Detroit but not the Bears. nope not the Bears...

Windy City Gridiron Judge blocks doping suspensions of 2 Vikings

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—A judge has blocked NFL plans to suspend Minnesota Vikings players Kevin Williams(notes) and Pat Williams(notes).

Hennepin County District Judge Gary Larson on Thursday granted the players’ motion for a temporary restraining order. That keeps the NFL from suspending them until their case is decided.

That may be a while. The judge also scheduled a hearing for July 22 on whether he should put state court proceedings on hold while a federal appeals court considers other issues in the case.

The defensive tackles tested positive last summer for a banned diuretic that can mask the presence of steroids, though they’ve never been accused of taking steroids.

The NFL had intended to enforce the Williamses’ four-game suspensions at the start of the upcoming season.

Hopefully they will wait until week 10 when the vikings have 4 conference games (2 divisional lions then bears), 3 of which being home games to make the decision to ban these guys for their usage of banned substances. I would love to see the lions beat them and I think it is pretty obvious what prospect of 4 conference losses and the divisional losses would do. Go Bears!
