Windy City Gridiron Looking Back on the 2005 Bears

Earlier, ifuwannacrownem posted that the Bears are on Hulu.  This allows you to watch season recaps as well as individual games that were labeled "game of the week". The game I chose to watch was from week 7, 2005.  It was a divisional game between the Lions and Bear where Peanut won it for us with an overtime pick six.  Here are some observations from the game as they pertain to today:

  • I have always been a Tommie Harris supporter, but that may have changed based upon watching this.  While the booth reviewed a possible Hunter Hillenmeyer fumble recovery for a touchdown, Alfonso Boone was discussing the play with Tommie.  Tommie's exact words, on film, were "I don't even care.  I'm ready to go home."  That is the most blatant example of piss poor competitiveness I have ever heard.  And this was when he was still a pro-bowler!  I keep trying to tell myself that he didn't really mean it, or some nonsense like that.  But there is no way around it.  In a tough, physical game, Tommie just wasn't mentally there anymore.
  • Thomas Jones was the obvious sideline leader.  I think looking at today, thats what our offense is lacking.  Perhaps Chester Taylor can step into that, and rally the troops when necessary.  But, I think Jay has proved that it is a role that he is uncomfortable with.  I guess as long as he makes the throws, we can count on someone else to do the yelling.
  • Bobby Wade was an absolutely horrific return man.
  •  I don't know why we ever got rid of Chris Harris.  He could hit hard and played fast.  He is exactly what we need now at the safety position.
  • Finally, it was incredible to watch how dominant our D was.  Hopefully, we can get back to that point this year.

Windy City Gridiron Marshall Tendered For First Round Pick

There's been a lot of talk on WCG today about the Bears possibly acquiring Brandon Marshall, but according to sporting news.com and Adam Schefter, that may have just become impossible.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter via Twitter, Marshall, a restricted free agent, just received the first-round tender.

That means just to acquire him, the Bears will need to send a first-round pick to Denver. Here’s the problem: The Broncos already own Chicago’s first-round pick for 2010, thanks to, you guessed it, last year’s Cutler trade.

Unless we trade Olsen for a first rounder which we subsequently ship off to Denver, there is no way that we can get Marshall.  I honestly think that a first-rounder is a fair price for Brandon but what we would have to give up in order to get said first-rounder is just too much. Hopefully, this means we'll be looking at that young core of guys at WR for another year, and the Bears can focus on greater needs.
