Tommy Cross on the Cover of the Boston Herald today. No not the cover of the sports section, the front cover.
The Globe followed Jerry York around on Thursday. This happened. This is not an April Fool's joke.
PLEASE JERRY, STAY AWAY FROM SPAZ LIKE THE PLAGUE. Don't want any of that awful coaching to rub off on you.
Bruins sign Hobey Baker Finalist Torey Krug
The Boston Bruins continued their work on adding organizational depth, reportedly agreeing to terms with Michigan State University standout offensive defenseman Torey Krug.
Patriots sign DE Jonathan Fanene
According to Aaron Wilson of Ravens Insider the Patriots have inked Jonathan Fanene to a three year deal today.

Terms have not been released, but Fanene is a good plan B to Red Bryant and should be much cheaper. Well done by Bill in my opinion, but there are still a lot of holes that need to be filled.
Looks like New England is home now. Grateful for the opportunity and ready to begin a new chapter. #Revs

Where is Shakim Phillips on the BC roster? He wore #84 last year and as you can see he is no longer there and a quick glance at the roster shows that he has not switched numbers.

Bruins Sign Adam McQuaid To A 3 Year Extension
BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed defenseman Adam McQuaid to a three-year contract extension through the 2014-15 season. The team also signed forward Craig Cunningham to an entry level contract and defenseman Zach McKelvie to a one-year contract. Per club policy, financial terms of these deals will not be disclosed.
Update: Capgeek is reporting that the deal is for 3 years and $4.7 million, for an annual cap hit of $1.567 million.
Why You Should Be Optimistic About The Benoit Pouliot Signing
At fist glance, many people struggled to understand the signing of unrestricted free agent and former Montreal Canadien Benoit Pouliot. However, at further examination one can see the benefits of signing a guy like Pouliot to a 1 year contract worth just $1.1 million.
Pouliot, 24, is the former 4th overall pick of the Minnesota Wild in the 2005 NHL draft where he never had much success in parts of 4 different seasons. He ended up being traded to Montreal for another disappointment, Guillaume Latendresse in the 2009-10 season. After that trade, Pouliot showed off a little of that untapped potential, scoring 15 goals and 24 points in just 39 regular season games with the Canadiens that season.
However, once the playoffs rolled around Pouliot once again disappeared, contributing just 2 assists in 18 games during the Habs' run to the conference final. He continued to struggle into this past season with the Canadiens scoring just 13 goals and 30 points in 79 regular season games. His struggles forced coach Jacques Martin to bench him after just 3 playoff games against the Bruins where he contributed 0 points.
There are plenty of reason to question the signing (as Jack Edwards is probably doing), however there are also a few reasons to be optimistic about the signing and believe that Pouliot can make something of himself with the Bruins.

Can Steven Kampfer Replace Tomas Kaberle?
With free agency under a day away, the Boston Bruins recently made some news when it was announced that they have offered the rights to UFA Tomas Kaberle to anyone in the league that is interested in signing him. Therefore, for all intents and purposes the Bruins and Tomas Kaberle are going to part ways, unless the market is not what Kaberle expected and he is forced to take a discount. The question then becomes: how do the Bruins replace him? Do they Bruins use a prospect from inside the organization like Steven Kampfer? Do the Bruins sign a big name free agent defensemen to a very large contract like Christian Ehrhoff or James Wisniewski, if they are not signed by the teams that recently traded for their rights? Do the Bruins make a trade for someone who could fill that role like Zach Bogosian?
Many people believe that the Bruins are going to let Tomas Kaberle walk because they realize how much money is going to be spent this year on free agents due to the increase in the salary cap. Which in turn means that the Bruins don't want to spent that kind of money, so using a player like Steven Kampfer could very well be the solution. Kampfer played in 38 games last year as a Bruins and showed a little bit of what he could do early on before getting a concussion which ended his season with the big club.

Montreal Police Still Planning On Questioning Chara
MONTREAL -- Zdeno Chara hoisted the Stanley Cup as captain of the Boston Bruins two weeks ago. Now the big defenceman will have something else on his hands: a meeting with Montreal police.
Montreal cops have announced they intend to question Chara soon -- but they won't say when or where they'll do it.
A probe into Chara's hit last March that sidelined Montreal forward Max Pacioretty and sparked demands for a crackdown on hockey violence is nearing completion.
A police spokesman says Chara is the final person they need to speak with to complete their investigation; after that, the Crown will decide whether to press charges.
"The last person to meet is the person targeted by the investigation and that will be done in the coming weeks or months," Lafreniere said.
Dougie Hamilton Selected 9th Overall By The Boston Bruins
Coming into the draft the two defencemen that had been projected as Boston Bruins picks at 9th overall were Ryan Murphy from the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL and Nathan Beaulieu of the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL. However, not many people believed that defencemen Dougie Hamilton of the Niagara Ice Dogs would be available at that spot. After rumors of the Bruins potentially trading the pick were shot down, they wasted no time going up to the podium and selecting the big, smooth skating defencemen out of the Onatario Hockey League.
Dougie Hamilton is a great pick at #9, especially for the Bruins who are able to take their time and let him develop into an impact defencemen while still competing for a Stanley Cup. Hamilton, 18, is a native of St. Catharines, Ontario and while he is measured at 6 feet, 4 inches tall, he only weighs in at 187 pounds. Therefore, there is a lot of room from him to grow as both a hockey player and a physical being. TSN's draft coverage compared him to Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks and that seems to be a very good comparison because they are of similiar size and both posted numbers in the OHL.
In 2010-2011 Hamilton tallied 12 goals and 46 assists for 58 points in 67 games along with piling up 77 penalty minutes. He also finished third in OHL Top Defenseman voting last year behind Ryan Ellis and Ryan Murphy.
More analysis to come on Hamilton later, but here are some links to Scouting Reports after the jump.
Bruins Mock Draft Roundup
The First Round of the NHL draft starts tonight (7:00 PM ET, Versus) and the Boston Bruins have the 9th overall pick that they acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Phil Kessel deal. Drafting this high again means that they are going to get to add another very good prospect to the system.
In fact, many people believe there is a group of 9 that have separated themselves from the rest of the field in this draft. That includes one of the best prospect reporters in hockey, TSN's Bob McKenzie. McKenzie had this to say about the top of this draft in his draft preview:
Report: Milan Lucic And Tuukka Rask To Have Offseason Surgery
According to Kevin Paul Dupont, Tuukka Rask is going to have a minor surgery done on one of his knees. KPD is also reporting that Milan Lucic has to have surgery on his nose. You can add those two injuries to the reported Nathan Horton (shoulder and head) and David Krejci (shoulder) injuries. After all is said and done our whole 4th line was playing injured or out injured by the time the team won the Stanley Cup.
Boston Bruins Organizational Depth Chart - Summer '11
Coming off of a Stanley Cup victory it is hard to look at the Boston Bruins and criticize them for any faults afterall they were able to prove that they were the best team in the league this year. However, going into the draft the Boston Bruins are most certainly going to take a look at what kind of players and prospects they have in their organization in order to figure out what they need to add via the draft, free agency or making a trade with another club. Therefore, we are going to do the same thing here and take a look at the depth of our organization.
Over the past year the Bruins organizational depth chart has most certainly changed and I think we can all agree that it has more or less been for the better. Gone via trade are the likes of wingers Marco Sturm (to Washington via Los Angeles), Blake Wheeler (to Winnipeg), centers Vladimir Sobotka (to St. Louis), Joe Colborne (to Toronto) and defensemen Dennis Wideman (to Washington via Florida), Mark Stuart (to Winnipeg) and Matt Hunwick (to Colorado). The Bruins also "lost" guys like Miroslav Satan and Steve Begin to free agency, but those were expected moves last summer. Another guy the organization is going to lose this summer is veteran Mark Recchi, as he and his 43 year old self has decided to call it quits while on top of the hockey world. On the other hand, the Bruins have added many different players and prospects to their organization in the same timeframe. Guys that have been brought into the organization include, but are not limited to, prospects like Tyler Seguin, Jared Knight, Ryan Spooner (via the Draft), David Warsofsky (via St. Louis) along with players Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell (via Florida), Tomas Kaberle (via Toronto), Chris Kelly (via Ottawa) and Rich Peverley (via Winnipeg). It should be another interesting summer for the Bruins as they have some cap space to play with due to the expected increase of the cap along with draft picks in each of the 7 rounds of the draft.

Just one day before the National Hockey League's Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers have made drastic changes to the face of their franchise.
In two separate deals made within a half hour of each other on Thursday, the club traded away captain Mike Richards and former 40-plus goal scorer Jeff Carter.
Richards was shipped to the Los Angeles Kings for forwards Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and a second-round draft pick, while Carter was dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Jakub Voracek and a first (8th overall) and third round draft pick.
By dealing Carter and Richards, the Flyers opened up enough cap space to then sign recently-acquired goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to a nine-year, $51 million contract.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Left-hander Andrew Miller will be promoted to the Red Sox from Triple-A Pawtucket and is scheduled to pitch Monday against the San Diego Padres, according to a baseball source.
Miller met with Red Sox GM Theo Epstein on Wednesday, the deadline for him to exercise an opt-out in his contract that would have allowed him to become a free agent if the Sox did not call him up by then. Miller went 5 1/3 innings for the PawSox on Tuesday night, allowing a run on five hits while walking one and striking out 10, so will be pitching with an extra day's rest on Monday.
Eagles land 2nd recruit for 2012 (Subscription Req.)
Sam Grant, TE, out of St. Edward High School in Ohio has committed to the Eagles for the 2012 class. Grant is 6'6" and weighs in at 240 pounds. He had offers from Michigan, Cincinnati, Louisville, NC State, Syracuse.
Reggie Jackson likely is going to stay in the draft. He'll be a workout wonder and a first-round pick. If he does depart, Steve Donahue will have to completely overhaul his roster in his second season, building the Eagles from the ground up.

New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather allegedly shot two men, one of them in the head, during a fight on February 27 outside a house party in Apopka, Florida, according to John Morgan, attorney for the victims.
The trouble started at the Blue Jeans Lounge in Apokpa when a friend of Meriweather's allegedly beat up a woman, according to Morgan. The woman's brother arrived later with his own friend, and the conflagration shifted to a nearby party, where the brother soon got the better of Meriweather's friend in a fight. That's when Meriweather allegedly pulled out his gun and fired at the brother, grazing the man's face and hitting the other victim in the head, according to Morgan.

Aaron Rodgers felt good enough to make some jokes in the Packers locker room on Friday, but he’s not ready to play football again.
The Packers ruled Rodgers out on Saturday after the medical staff did not clear him for the game. Rodgers is expected to still make the trip to New England, but Graham Harrell was activated off the team’s practice squad. Harrell will back up Matt Flynn on Sunday.
Rodgers is expected to be on the sideline to help Flynn during the game. The team placed safety Anthony Smith on injured reserve to clear roster space for Harrell.
[N]ow that we know the Jets were lining up personnel on the sideline in a shoulder-to-shoulder, foot-to-foot formation, it’s safe to assume that others have engaged in similar tactics. Jets special-teams coordinator Mike Westhoff, in a Wednesday visit with the Waddle & Silvy Show on ESPN 1000 in Chicago, said that the Patriots engage in similar tactics. "A number of teams do it," Westhoff said. "There is a pretty good team up north that lines their whole defense up when they do it, so it’s something that just kind of happened." Asked if he’s saying the Patriots line up players to impede punt coverage teams, Westhoff elaborated. "Well, if you watch them, their defense when the opponents’ punt team is out there," Westhoof said. "They’re up there pretty close to the line so it looks like they are trying to do it. Now are they doing anything illegal? Are they tripping anybody, heck no. I’m not saying that. That’s not the point. But, yeah, they’re lined up there. Is it making a difference? I don’t know. I really don’t know, because to tell you the truth before this happened I never really looked at anybody’s sideline in all my years."
