Since this time two years ago, we've all heard the adage about Jake Locker being more accurate from outside of the pocket than inside. I wanted to take a look at his throws on the outside and inside from the 2012-13 season, so I watched and recorded them all. I found a few numbers that at least I thought were interesting, not only about Locker inside and outside of the pocket, but other numbers that tie in with Dowell Loggains, Chris Palmer, and more.

From Inside the Pocket vs. From Outside the Pocket: This surprised me a little bit. Going into this, I thought that Locker would be significantly better from outside of the pocket than from inside. Before I watched any of his throws, I wrote down my guesses, and I assumed that Locker would be at least 60% from outside of the pocket, and that from inside the pocket he'd 54%. I was off by a solid amount on both of these guess. From inside of the pocket, factoring out throwaways, I found that Locker completed 59% of his passes. Halfway through, I'd realized that I forgot to factor drops out as well, so I somewhat regret that, but that could have ended up becoming a little too subjective. From outside of the pocket, again factoring out throwaways, I have Locker down for completing 57% of his passes.

Running the Football: This is a category where I'd like to see some change next season. Locker had 38 rushing attempts by my count, factoring out kneels. Of those 38 attempts, only 9 were from designed runs, meaning that only 24% of Locker's rushing attempts were designed runs. One thing I did notice however was that there were significantly more designed runs under Loggains than Palmer. Hopeully that trend continues next year, as I think given the correct situations designed runs for Locker can be very effective, like we saw in the New York Jets game.

Palmer vs. Loggains: I compared a few things when it came to Loggains and Palmer. I thought that Locker attempted a lot more passes outside of the pocket under Loggains. When I went back and looked, the numbers were pretty even--one more throw outside of the pocket under Loggains. Completion percentage wise, combining throws from both inside and outside of the pocket and factoring out throwaways, Locker was only 53% under Loggains, while he was throwing 59% under Palmer.

Against Divisional Opponents: I just did this one for fun at the end to see how he performed against the division last season. I had him completing 54% of his passes against the division. Against Houston, he was 44%. He only had one game against Indianapolis, and he completed 63% of his passes there. Against Jacksonville, he was 58%.

As always, the context of certain plays make some numbers harder to read into than others. For example, there were a number of back breaking incompletions that Locker absolutely had to complete. He missed high on a pass to Nate Washington against New England where there was no one around him in sight, on a crucial third down. He did the same on a pass to Lavelle Hawkins against New York, we can't forget the Taylor Thompson play against Green Bay, and there were a lot more. However, there were also a lot of dropped passes that professionals absolutely must catch. I noticed a good number of drops by Jared Cook and Nate Washington. Kendall Wright and Kenny Britt had their fair share as well. So, while it is definitely important to consider the context, you also have to assume that a lot of plays that would increase his percentages really just even out with with a lot of the plays that would decrease it.

After watching Locker again, it confirmed some of my initial beliefs. He has a lot of work to do. While a lot of blame can be placed on coordinators and offensive line play, he just absolutely needs to be more accurate with a lot more of his passes. Also, he needs to get more air under his deep balls. I was pretty disappointed regarding his deep ball accuracy this season. The Titans can build around him as much as they want, but it is up to him to make that next step accuracy wise if he wants to become a playoff quarterback.

Since this time two years ago, we've all heard the adage about Jake Locker being more accurate from outside of the pocket than inside.
We are in the middle of the "legal tampering period", where thanks to an NFL memo sent out late threatening tampering charges, we probably will not hear much, other than re-signings and cuts. For example, as I'm writing this, the news broke about 20 minutes ago that the Falcons will re-sign William Moore, and the Ravens have told Anquan Boldin to take a paycut, or be cut. I am expecting a flurry of news similar to that up until Tuesday afternoon.

The Titans obviously have a ton of holes that need to be filled this off-season. In an effort to narrow some of them down before the draft, they're going to need to be aggressive in free agency this year, which they have said that they will. I have personally ranked their needs by level of importance, and while they may not be the same as the consensus, I do believe that the Titans will hit all of these positions in some way, shape, or form by the time the entire off-season is over.

Needs based of level of importance: G, S, DE, DT, CB, TE, WR, RB

I have watched a lot of the possible free agents that the Titans could target recently, and while I am not some NFL expert, I do trust my own eyes enough to rank these free agents.

Guard: The interior offensive line play has been poor ever since Kevin Mawae left. There are enough capable free agent offensive linemen this year that Tennessee should be able to have another Mawae-like signing, except obviously not as a Center. Some options may include:

Louis Vasquez: The best G in this free agent class. He holds up nicely in pass protection, and is dominant in run blocking. He also is able to get to the second level relatively quickly, which has been a problem for Titan Guards for years now. He is also young, at only 25 years old. My favorite game that I watched was against Pittsburgh, where he absolutely dominated Ziggy Hood, and Steeler linebackers from the first play.

Andy Levitre: I expected more. While Levitre is good in pass protection, he is small, and I'd only give him about a C or C+ in run blocking. He will never be a road grading G, like Vasquez or draft prospect Chance Warmack. He brings solidity to the offensive line however, having never missed a start, which is something the Titans desperately needed last year. He pulls quickly, but gets caught off balance at times. I distinctly remember him getting up to Jerod Mayo, and if he'd just been able to hold on, Fred Jackson would have had a massive hole. However he was off balance, and whiffed completely. The play resulted in about a two yard gain. His run blocking is not great, but due to his pass blocking skills and durability, he will still command a lot of money from some team, quite possibly the Titans.

Kevin Boothe: Boothe surprised me. I didn't really know much about him. The first game that I saw was against Cincinnati. He held up nicely in pass protection against Geno Atkins, who is an absolute monster. He was also solid, not great, but solid in the run game. He started all 16 games and is 29 years old. He could be a solid pickup if the Titans want to save some money.

Brandon Moore: Moore is a solid player. In the Houston game, while he held up decently against the pass, I got the feel that he was a little overwhelmed at times, ending up on the ground more than once. It could have been due to Wade Phillips' heavy blitzes, or just an overall poor situation on offense. However in other games he seemed more settled, and was just an overall solid player. He is 32, but would bring veteran leadership to Tennessee, and would obviously be an upgrade.

Honorable mentions: Ramon Foster, Donald Thomas

Safeties: The Titans are not done looking at safeties even though they signed George Wilson. That being said, I think any safety that they will get from this point on will be through the draft. So, I didn't watch any games of the available safeties. However, without watching, I'd rank the safeties right now as:

Dashon Goldson

Glover Quin

Chris Clemons

Laron Landry

3 way Tie between Kenny Phillips, Pat Chung and Louis Delmas (all have health issues)

Defensive Ends: I did not really fall in love with any of theses guys, especially given what I think we should be looking for. Kamerion Wimbley struggles against the run, so I think the Titans should look for guys to play on early downs. Plus, Wimbley played entirely too many snaps last year. They need to create more of a rotation, and adding someone to play on early downs will help in that department.

Michael Bennett: While Bennett is not going to be an extraordinary edge rusher, he is a solid player. He is a powerful player, and had 9 sacks last year. The production from years prior to 2012 worries me somewhat, but he is still young, and could be just hitting his stride now.

Israel Idonije: While Idonije is not going to take your breath away with superb pass rushing skills, he still racked up 7.5 sacks last year. He is a solid player, and would be a significant upgrade against the run. He is 32 years old however, and might be a guy you look at for a shorter 1 or 2 year deal, like Tennessee did with George Wilson.

Dwight Freeney: Freeney surprised me a little bit. I admittedly lumped him in with guys like Osi and Abraham because of age, but after watching him a little bit, I am convinced that he can still bring it. He is solid against the run and still is effective rushing the passer. The key at this point for Freeney is to stay healthy for 16 games, which has been a problem for a while. That being said, I actually think Freeney would be a solid addition.

John Abraham: Abraham is old, but is still a decent player. That being said, I don't think he fits in Nashville. Mike Smith took Abraham out a lot. He is really more of a situational guy. If you want someone to come in on early downs, you might have to look elsewhere. I also think a lot of Abraham's numbers came against poor tackles.

Paul Kruger: I had a man crush on Paul Kruger for a while, and once I finally watched just him, I was actually pretty underwhelmed. He doesn't play all that many snaps, and is not good at all against the run. Signing Kruger would be like signing another Wimbley, but for a lot more money.

Elvis Dumervil (note: he is not a free agent, but could be released): I also expected a lot more from Dumervil. I believe that I can defend the run as well as "Doom". For example, against Houston, it felt like an eternity before I saw Arian Foster run to the left side, because Houston could continue to run right off of the right tackle, and be able to pick up yardage. Dumervil couldn't do anything about it, either.

Osi Umenyiora: I'm not really sure what all the hype is about here, other than his name. He is a situational guy who can't play against the run at all. Pretty much just see what I said above about Abraham, water it down, and you have yourself an Osi.

Cliff Avril: I thought I'd see more. I was not even expecting much, but he disappointed me, even with lower expectations. I wasn't sure who was subbing in for him, but I think I actually like him better. Not good against the run, small, and gets engulfed by good NFL tackles. Someone is going to get an FA bust here, and I hope it's not the Titans.

Honorable mentions: Juqua Parker, William Hayes

Defensive Tackle: Sen'Derrick Marks is most likely gone. So now, you have Casey as a starter, and possibly Martin. But, behind that, you don't really have much else. Klug is someone who should be used in pass rushing situations, but not as a guy that should be really seeing significant time. I also read the other day on the Tennessean that the Titans were trying to get bigger at tackle. Stopping the run was a serious problem this year, and it needs to be fixed. Jobs cannot be kept when guys like Keith Toston and Richard Murphy (LSU boy) can gash you. Some options:

Desmond Bryant: He is probably the best defensive tackle. He is long, and large. He was arrested, but it was a really small thing, something that shouldn't even be given any thought (however you should check out the mugshot for a laugh). He might be a better fit for a 3-4 however.

Glenn Dorsey: One of my favorite players. I promise I am not being biased here, however. Dorsey is very good against the run, and would be great to plug in the middle. He has been stuck playing as a 3-4 end, when he is a significantly better fit as a 4-3 tackle. This will be a very underrated pickup for a 4-3 team, and I hope that it is Tennessee.

Ricky Jean-Francois (LSU boy!): It sounds like he could be a hot name this year. He is versatile, and is a playmaker. He is 26 years old, and is ready to breakout. He can play any position on the defensive line. He could be a solid pick up to add depth, and possibly even start.

Terrance Knighton: Pot roast did not have his best year last year. It started with his eye injury, and it was all an uphill battle from there. However, we have seen what he is capable of, and he is still young. He would most definitely add some size to the defensive line, and occupy linemen to free up other guys on the line.

Jason Jones: I think we know who that is. I doubt he comes back, but he is a solid player.

Honorable mentions: Sammie Lee Hill, Richard Seymour, Chris Canty, Cullen Jenkins

Conerbacks: I think I have corner ranked a little higher than others. I think the Titans were interested in bringing a corner in last year, but couldn't find "their guy". I don't think much inspired them in 2012 to make them stop looking for their guy. I think Coty Sensabaugh is a better fit as a 4th guy, and Mouton is gone. They can either bring in a slot guy, or an outside guy, to move Verner inside. Depth at corner is extremely important, especially in today's league.

Aqib Talib: Talib is the best corner available. However, there are some off the field things that could scare a team like the Titans away. He can be moved around though, is very tough, and would be a very nice addition to the secondary.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie: A solid veteran, who is quick and has playmaking ability. That being said, I personally would like to bring in a tougher corner to fill the Finnegan role, and he does not really fit that.

Brent Grimes: Grimes is a very good corner, but is coming off a major injury. Teams are going to have to proceed with caution, but if he can get back to the Brent Grimes we've seen, you have yourself a top corner in the league.

Keenan Lewis: This is Pittsburgh's best corner. He is long, can run with most receivers, is good against red zone jump balls, and can even do some blitzing. He could be an underrated signing in what is a very deep class for corners. He is one of my personal favorite players overall out of any of the free agents this year.

Derek Cox: The Titans would have their hands full with this guy. On a serious note, he has always shown the ability to be one of the better corners in the league, but has injury problems. Without them, he's much higher on this list.

Cary Williams: He loves Tennessee, and could be overlooked, in what is a very solid and deep free agent class. He has the Finnegan toughness and fire that I was talking about earlier. However, he will get burned deep every now and then, and on double moves, due to his aggressive nature. He struggles more with the crisp route runners. Brandon Lloyd lit him up in week 3.

Tight Ends: Cook is gone. The Titans do have the underrated Stevens, but Thompson is not ready for significant time. There has been a lot of talk of more two tight end sets now with the addition of Henshaw as TE coach, so bringing in a second guy will be pretty important.

James Casey: I have said many times in the past week that he is the best free agent tight end. He is a legitimate threat in the passing game, but is also a superb blocker. Also, he is very versatile. This piece can be moved around a lot, including as a fullback. A perfect complement to Stevens in 2 tight end sets.

Martellus Bennett: I am not really buying into Bennett. He underachieved for years in Dallas. Every time they threw to him, something bad happened. He did have a solid year in New York though. If the Titans get NY Bennett, they'd add a solid piece. However, if they sign Dallas Bennett, you could very well be looking for answers at tight end next year again.

Dustin Keller: Probably the best receiving tight end in the class. That being said, to put it shortly, a team is going to overpay for him.

Honorable mentions: Brandon Myers, Fred Davis

Wide Receivers: I really only like one guy in this class. Mike Wallace and Greg Jennings are simply not happening. The Titans need to decide how they feel about Damian Williams. Britt is a luxury at this point. When you have him, great, but they need to act as if Britt's not on the team, which leaves you with Wright, Washington, and Williams as your top 3.

Danario Alexander: While I was writing this, news broke that RFA Alexander would be given the lowest round Tender. He is an interesting option. He broke out this year, and was San Diego's best WR. A late round draft pick would be a small price to pay for a guy like Alexander.

Anquan Boldin (not released yet, but it's looking likely): It would be amazing to add Boldin. He does not bring in the vertical threat like a Wallace, but he does everything so nicely. He's got sure hands, is a good route runner, and is tough. Also, he brings serious veteran leadership. He could be a safety valve for Locker, of sorts.

Honorable mention: Brandon Gibson

Running Back: I think the Titans will look towards the draft here. They need to add some fresh legs as a change of pace guy, and they probably know that. Plus, the free agent class is pretty underwhelming at the position. I can't list anybody here because the only guy worth talking about is Steven Jackson, and that is not happening.

The Titans are going to be busy for a while trying to fill all of the holes on the roster. I expect them to be aggressive, and there are a lot of solid pieces that can be added to the roster. They just need to be smart, and trust their eyes. Here's hoping they make the correct decisions over the next few weeks.

The Tennessee Titans were a win against an 0-14 team away from the playoffs in 2011. However, they still have a ton of holes that need to be filled by the fall of 2012. The free agency period starts this Tuesday, and this will be our first crack at filling some of those holes. Our new GM Ruston Webster has said a few interesting things during this dull period in the NFL. One of the most interesting things that he said was that the Titans will focus on the defensive front 7 and the running game during free agency. On defense, they need to upgrade on basically all levels. Offensively, I am expecting one signing at either G or C. However, there are other positions that need to be upgraded besides both lines. I am sharing my thoughts on all positions that could be upgraded during this FA period.

The Tennessee Titans were a win against an 0-14 team away from the playoffs in 2011. I am sharing my thoughts on all positions that could be upgraded during this FA period.

Defensive End: The Titans were ranked 31st in sacks in 2011. It is obvious that in order to be a productive defense in the league, you have to be much better than that. Also, the Titans will be losing their best CB, Cortland Finnegan. To make up for all of this, they will need to make some serious upgrades at defensive end; not only for improving the front liners, but they also have to add depth, only having one defensive end under contract--Derrick Morgan. The ideal match for us would obviously be Mario Williams. He would join other Titans such as Jevon Kearse and Albert Haynesworth in history as the 1 extremely feared defensive lineman that anchors the "D" and propels them into the top 10 as a unit. From 1999-2003 (minus 2002 due to injury) the Titans had Jevon Kearse, who averaged 11 sacks per year. During that time period, they averaged out as the 13th ranked defense. In 2007 and 2008, Albert Haynesworth started chasing the money and playing hard. Over those two years, Haynesworth had 14.5 sacks and the Titans averaged out as the 6th ranked defense. In the years without Kearse, (2004-2006) the Titans averaged out as the 26th ranked defense. In the post-Albert years, (2009-present) the Titans averaged out as the 24th ranked defense. You cannot put a price tag on a player that can propel your defense from a bottom dweller to a perennial top 10-15 defense. Other options may include:

-Dwight Freeney or Osi Umenyiora via trade

-Andre Carter

-John Abraham

-Jeremy Mincey

Unless you are willing to give up a lot via trade, there is not too much out there at defensive end outside of Mario Williams as a front liner. For depth, some options may include:

-Re-signing Dave Ball or William Hayes

-Juqua Parker

-Matt Roth

-Mark Anderson (though he did have 10 sacks in 2011)

-Dave Tollefson

-Raheem Brock

Defensive Tackle: All offseason long last year, Defensive Coordinator Jerry Gray preached, "get bigger and stop the run". While that sounded great and exciting, it just completely backfired. Not only did the Titans lose their best pass rushing defensive tackle in Jason Jones, they finished the season ranked even worse against the run than they did the previous year. Teams ran the ball at will on the Titans, especially down the stretch--the Colts game and 2nd Texans game come to mind immediately. They added a real keeper in Jurrell Casey and a free agent bust in Shaun Smith. This caused draft bust Sen'Derrick Marks to be thrown into the starting lineup and have to play a ton of snaps. While Marks improved and provides depth at the position, he is most definitely not a starter or a guy than can play even close to as many snaps as he did in 2011. The Titans must find another starting defensive tackle to pair with Casey that will be able to stuff the run and provide some sort of pass rush. Some options may include:

-Antonio Garay (played NT in a 3-4 with SD most recently, but has played in both systems)

-Red Bryant

-Aubrayo Franklin

-Brodrick Bunkley

-Jonathan Fanene

Linebacker: Will Witherspoon is on the wrong side of 30 and seemed to be battling through a good amount of injuries as the year went on. Also, from the naked eye, it seemed that his snap count was a lot lower than previous years. He is entering the last year of his contract, and it wouldn't surprise me to see the Titans attempt to upgrade over him. Witherspoon is the Titans' WLB, narrowing their options in the free agent market. Some options may include:

-David Hawthorne

-Erin Henderson

Cornerback: The departure of Cortland Finnegan has been well covered (no pun intended). While I am confindent that McCourty and Verner will do a fine job on the outside, the Titans now need to find a good replacement at nickelback. Mouton, Campbell, and Hawkins all have potential and could add nice depth at the position, but that is a big risk to go into the season only with them. Another option may be to sign another corner that could start outside, and move Verner back inside where he played in 2010. Some options may include:

-Marcus Trufant

-Terrell Thomas

-Aaron Ross

-Richard Marshall

Interior Offensive Line: I don't think much needs to be said about the interior offensive line for the 2011 Titans. Jake Scott did things like this, made Falcons' Jonathan Babineaux look like Albert Haynesworth circa 2007, and everything in between. Eugene Amano was the source of many Titan fans' heartaches when he had entirely too many plays like this. Leroy Harris had killer penalties, pulled poorly, and just got flat out blown up many times. Sadly, he was the Titans' best interior offensive lineman in 2011. There is no wonder most running plays ended up looking like this. However, the Titans have Mike Munchak and Bruce Matthews running the show, and refuse to have another embarrassing year running the football. Some options may include:

-Pat McQuistan

Wide Receiver: The Titans have a legitimate need at Wide Receiver. While the corps is one of the, if not the strongest group on the Titans with a healthy Kenny Britt, there is too much uncertainty surrounding Britt to count on him. The oft-injured Britt is coming off of ACL surgery, and we just saw firsthand with Derrick Morgan how a player can come back from that injury and not be the same the next year. Nate Washington is a solid receiver, but the Titans really need to add another playmaker at the position. Re-signing Lavelle Hawkins adds nice depth on the back end, but they cannot be finished there. Some options may include:

-Laurent Robinson (my personal favorite here)

-Lee Evans (I know, I know. But, they were interested last year, and besides his 1 drop, he really came on for the rats after being injured most of the year before the final stretch)

-Robert Meachem

-Harry Douglas

-Jericho Cotchery

-Early Doucet

Hopefully, the Titans make the right decisions this offseason, and gear up for a run at the division next year. You never know how well which player can fit into which scheme. This free agency period should be really fun, and I am really looking forward to it, especially on this day, the 1 year anniversary of the NFL beginning its long and painful lockout.

"For instance, Reinfeldt was somewhat miscast as GM, said one source on the scene. His new position, formerly held by Steve Underwood, will allow him to work more behind the scenes on a broader scope of the team's affairs. Meanwhile, Webster, who shares a very similar philosophy to Reinfeldt on team building, is a guy who will be comfortable in the spotlight and dealing with agents, players and the media."

I thought I noticed this when I was watching the game on Sunday. In most 2nd half runs, where CJ had most of his yards, we had either multiple O-linemen pulling, or a G pulling, with Hall following, getting CJ outside more. I hope we continue to work around those kinds of runs, rather than what feels like just running CJ right up the middle every play.

I think if there's not at least SOME progress this week, it'll be time to seriously start worrying about this going into the regular season

"My absence had nothing to do with a holdout yet a personal matter that Titan officials were aware of. I am grateful for being a Titan. I am also thankful for my current contract and direction of team. It's obvious media had no idea of why my absence took place. I have spoken with coaches and teammates and will resume all things asked. Sad to see media made this out to be about money when I'm happy with all that has been given so forgive me Nashville for media making it seem that way. Media gets paid to report never knowing but one side of a story. My personal issues needed attention and I will be out there playing ball. Look forward to answering questions Tom at practice. Titans officials were aware of my absence but disappointed I was not there very different due to Personal matters. I am human. My absence had nothing to do with contract or holdout. I will resume all activities with team.. Very happy with current situation. Who and where did this all stem from.. Let me guess a tweet then Wyatt jumped to conclusions with no real story. Media gets paid to do a job. Being absence from a team function doesnt mean holdout or your unhappy. Family issues come up. I'm human thank you Nashville for understanding."
