The fallout from the closure of the Gibson Amphitheater at Universal is benefiting USC's Galen Center. Nederlander group's intention to book concerts at the Galen certainly starts to add revenue to the center. I went to a tribute for Ella Fitzgerald at Galen perhaps in the year or two after it opened. Surprisingly the venue work really well for concerts. It has been been used sparingly for other concerts and the Nickelodeon awards. http://www.usctrojans.com/blog/2013/04/galen-center-making-noise.html
I thought this Pat Haden interview from the LA Times would already be posted here. It is interesting in that it seems like a pretty good recounting of the recent SC misses on coach selection under Garret. It may be reassuring to critics of Haden or not but I think it is a good read.
The closing ceremony US flag bearer will be Bryshom Nellum.... current Trojan student and Silver medalist. Great story in RipsIt blog. USC's 24 medals are a school record. Their 12 golds also broke the USC record for most golds in a single Olympics, eclipsing the 10 golds won at both London 1948 and Beijing 2008!
A direct read on USC’s recruiting -- credits to Kiffin & Orgeron but ultimately USC being USC.
The Aquatics Center really needed more than a facelift and this appears to be in keeping with the brick and mortar of USC. There a number of renderings in the link with their link right under the date. It looks to be a much more hospitable setting. The largest gift ever from a former student-athlete, Uytengsu.
For 5th year in row, USC wins the Crosstown Gauntlet. After trading the title back and forth for the first six years with UCLA; USC now leads 8-3. The head to head competition originally sponsored by Lexus started in 2001/2002.
Luckily USC has made it to the NCAA Tournament for Men’s Volleyball at Galen Center. Lucky because the last outing against top see UCI was dismal. http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-volley/spec-rel/042912aaa.html
USC wins 2nd consecutive MPSF Volleyball and will host Cal State Northridge at Galen Center for quarterfinal in MPSF Tourney.
Ah.... It should be better and maybe it will change with Mora. I guess Rick did more damage than 'we' thought.
Although not the best link - it has decent rendering of the proposed remodel of the MacDonald Pool. It has a nice tie-in to the campus replacing wrought iron fencing and adding brick and arches. It includes the addition of south stands and graceful canopies - a welcome improvement which hopefully cuts the glare when sitting in the north stands.
Great write up on USCtrojans.com about how SC got the nickname of Trojans and some history of the last 100 years.
Good luck to Mitch, interesting twist.
A "Tradition" he does not like and no one else understands.
Very happy Norm Chow is finally getting a Head Coach position!
LK must be feeling good being made fun of with PH in good humor not as the butt of jokes in Tennessee.
After sweeping both Yale & Tulsa on Friday & Saturday to Women move on to Regionals to face Hawi’i Friday Night and with a win will face either Pepperdine or Kansas St.
"Following a big 50 point win to seal their dominance over the south USC seniors Rhett Ellison, Christian Tupou, and Khaled Holmes, run to the Top seat of the Coliseum one last time!" Just came across this on YouTube.... A totally cool action....... the video just shows how special it all is!
"The Bruins had earned the right to represent the South in the Pac-12 title game." The entire write alludes to the past and FAILS to mention the 6-6 record coming into the game. I never have routed against a PAC team when out of conference but I will where ever ucla plays after they're humbled again at Oregon. Although I think my distain for the PAC12 Administration is stronger than for ucla. They are losers but the Administration are just hucksters selling ‘love potion’ crap. Hope it smells good on Larry Scott - he has got a lot of marketing splash!
How low can you go and still put a positive spin on it. So I am looking forward to the possible "Champion 6-8" tee-shirts.
Trojans Louis Zamperini and John Naber make a strong team. The story is compelling. And I was glad to see it in today’s LA Times as I was curious about Zamperini’s story when he was introduced at the Coliseum along with Naber.
The article has interesting psychological perspective on why there were riots after Paterno’s firing. It is interesting; I did not realized there are psych terms for the fan response phenomena. Excerpt---- Social psychologists use two terms: BIRGing and CORFing -- Basking in Reflected Glory and Cutting off Reflected Failure. In the first, fans of a football team, for example, want to identify with the players' success. Decked out in team gear, they'll say, "We had a great win. We were awesome," when in reality the fans had no part in the win. Cutting off Reflected Failure happens when a team makes a mistake or loses, and fans blame it on an external factor to distance themselves from the defeat. "The refs were biased. The weather's bad." The true blame doesn't lie with the team.
Although this is from two days ago. It is worth reading.
As an old Trojan I'll always remember him upon returning to be SC's Head Coach (the 1st time) after a stint with the Oakland Raiders saying "most of all I miss the Horse" at the press conference. It is good to see him at games and firmly back in the Trojan Family.
This was recently posted on USC website. There is mention of SC Football but the focus is USC as tourist destination for LA visitors 'a la' a Hotel TV - what to do in LA Channel. It covers history and its place in LA.
This link is to the USC-Olympians from last weeks game.... it was so amazing when people rose to their feet at hearing the introduction...'from the 1936 Berlin games...." the clapping was thunderous... a witness to history. It will be every home game day, this was particularly cool.
An Aggie friend sent me this video. It is the Hitler sequence used elsewhere with inserted subtitles.... These take-off is about UT reaction to Texas A&M leaving the Big 12 to the SEC. Amusing....
Although not sports related, I think this is worth noting. USC trustee Marc R. Benioff ’86 was featured on the latest cover of Forbes for his work in leading the world’s most innovative company, beating out Amazon, Google and Apple. Benioff is the chairman and chief executive officer of Salesforce.com, a pioneer in cloud-computing applications.
This looks like a Guano pile that just gets bigger for Oregon. Maybe I am wrong but a quick view and the handwritten thank you notes look to be more damning. There is so much 'maneuvering in the backfield' that it is almost dizzying. Maybe this was the germination of the hurry up no-huddle Oregon offense. Just keep everyone off guard and guessing.
SC gets past Stanford, the regular VB nemeses, to Final Four for the NCAA VB Crown semi-final match against Cal....
