Friday OT Thread: Some one please cheer me up edition
Marital strife, dreary weather, a home improvement project that won't be completed in time for the party being thrown to celebrate the home improvement project, was passed over for another promotion, the realization that the master's degree I'm about to finish and have spent thousands of dollars on probably isn't going to do anything for me, disappointment with my football team's draft pick. It's a pretty lousy morning - let's see if the RR faithful can cheer me up.

Remember when before/at the beginning of the season we were wondering about how we'd have to deal with all of the bandwagon fans this year? AHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH

What I talk about when I talk about baseball
The majority of my baseball information consumption comes online, via twitter, podcasts, and various blogs. Despite being a big baseball fan and having lots of friends who are also baseball fans, I don’t really ‘talk baseball’ much in person. The type of baseball talk that I experience online is of a different, more sophisticated/esoteric sort than the typical in-person fat chewing. However, with the start of the baseball season, this Royals team being more hyped than most recent vintages, and the successful opening weekend in Anaheim, baseball chatter among the general Kansas City public is at a much higher level than usual. At work, random people that I rarely talk to at all are approaching me to talk baseball. I’ve always had a schedule on the wall of my cubicle, some bobbleheads and other Royals knickknacks on display and I guess that makes me known as sort of the resident Royals baseball guy. I’m being forced to talk baseball with people that simply do not speak the same baseball language as I do. How do you guys handle in-person interactions with the non-digital version of the facebook fan?

OT: I'm in a class right now and we have a guest speaker who bears a very strong physical resemblance to Yuniesky Betancourt, down to the double chin and a lack of range to his left. It's extremely distracting.
Help me select a second team. I just bought the MLB at-bat app so I could listen to royals games at work (AM radio is completely nonfunctional) and while running. Since At-Bat lets you listen to any game, you don't just pick a single team, I figure I can get more for my money by following a second team. Somewhat following a team sounds better than just randomly tuning in to a different game every night. So who should my second team be? Interesting team, decent broadcasters, non-annoying fans/FO are all considerations. I'm thinking of the Rays or Brewers as contenders. What say you RR?
Friday OT Thread: End of the Year Edition
Another year all but in the books. Today is pretty much the last moment of workplace semi-serenity for me. Everyone retires at the end of the year, and with all of the holidays and stuff it gets pretty crazy around here this time. Calm before the storm and all that. Questions after the jump.
Friday OT Thread
I'm stuck at work today. There's pretty much no one here, and no expectation of getting anything done. As great as that sounds, it's actually colossaly boring. Can collosal really be made into an adjverb?
Friday OT Thread: Pain Edition
Tomorrow I'm running the Kansas City Marathon. I've been training for it for about four months and I'm really excited for the payoff to all the hard work. I was discussing this with a coworker and I mentioned A. that I was excited and that B. it was going to be a painful experience, and she was nonplussed. She couldn't understand that I was so excited for something that was going to be painful to me. Questions about pain after the jump
Friday OT Thread: End of the Season Edition
The Kansas City Nine has played their last game. An interesting team, with a legitimately above average team, and not that many hateable players. Nonetheless, another losing season is on the books. Questions after the jump.
Moneyball the Movie
I'm sure there are a lot of people on this board who saw the movie this weekend. Let's basically treat this like an open thread where we can share thoughts/opinions on the movie. Or, if you don't plan on seeing it, perhaps share why you aren't interested. I'll share some thoughts after the jump. Warning, there be spoilers here.
Kila DFA
Designated to make room for herrera on the 40 man roster.
Wonder what happens next with him?
Friday OT Thead: Being a Ninja
I am in the middle of refinancing my house. Dropped from 6.75% interest to 3.5%, and from a 30 year loan to a 15 year loan. It saves me something like 80k over the life of the loan and I'll only pay about $100 more per month for the mortgage payment. Plus I get to skip a mortgage payment - free money! I feel sort of like a ninja.
Any interest in a Coors Field post/breakdown? I spent the past week in Colorado and took in a tour of the stadium, as well as one of the games this weekend. I'd be happy to write it up if there's any interest. Bonus: there may or may not be pictures of a medical weed dispensary a block from the stadium that could make an appearance.
Best cans in baseball.
Off-Day OT Thread
This is the first of these that I've posted, so apologies if my questions aren't very exciting.
The system is THAT GOOD
- Its top ten list has eleven players
- The process trusts IT
- It helps Mike Moustakas with HIS math homework
- It can tweet 141 characters
- The 2012 All-Star game is just an Idaho Falls intra-squad scrimmage
Fascinating take on baseball violence in the Dominican
Our boy Ambiorix Burgos gets some mention of course. I think baseball in the DR is a pretty fascinating subject generally, but most write ups tend to focus on the players before they make it. This is a look at the violence that surrounds the players once they have money.
Yuni's Role in the Greinke Trade
Understandably, the majority of the attention on the KC-Milwaukee exchange has been on the loss of Greinke and the package KC received in return. Somewhat lost to the discussion has been that Yuniesky Betancourt was part of the package KC sent with Greinke, specifically his role and the impact of his departure.
Hate Equilibrium
2011 does not look like a year that will see too many team wins. 2010 was the same way. So rather than analyzing such meaningless things as whether or not the team will be any good, I decided to look at the offseason acquisitions and departures from the perspective of whether or not I hate the player. We'll see if the opening day 2011 lineup features an increase or decrease in players that I hate; this is your year end Hate Equilibrium update.

Semi-OT: Anyone read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? I'm only like 50 pages in so no spoilers please. The main character is named Blomkvist and whenever I read his name I see Bloomquist. It's very distracting. Also makes it hard for me to identify with the protagonist when his name represents something I dislike so much. Of course, it would have been a better novel if, instead of having a variety of different characters, the author just had 25 Blomkvists.
The Lesson of 2008
On August 31, 2008, the Royals looked dead to the baseball world. A shocking September run lifted the spirits of the KC baseball faithful and visions of competing in 2009 ran through everyone’s minds. In the 08/09 offseason, a variety of moves was made in the interest of contention in 2009 that were deleterious to the team’s long term and short-term chances. In light of this recent Royals hot streak, it is important to remember the lesson of 2008.

Callaspo Concerns?
I was sort of under the impression that Alberto Callaspo was having another nice offensive season. He's hitting for a bit more power, so I thought maybe he had even improved upon last year. But, a closer look reveals that Callaspo's on-base percentage has dropped to a pathetic .306. Considering his OBP this year is only .001 higher than his AVG from 2008 and only .006 higher than his 2009 AVG, my earlier assumptions were incorrect. So what's the deal?

Who would you rather punch in the face?
I apologize that this is a fanpost, not a fanshot, but there is no polling option in the fanshots that I could discover.
If afforded the opportunity to punch any of the below media types with ties to kansas city (however loose they may be) with no fear of retribution/fighting back/criminal charges/etc, who gets your haymaker? I'm settling a bet with a friend from work here, so your honesty is appreciated. Discuss your reasoning below.
On Free Agent Draft Compensation
Two elements of the structuring of the MLB amateur player draft are designed to benefit struggling teams. First, draft order is based on the previous season’s record. The team with the worst record drafts first, and the team with the best record drafts last. Second, teams that lose important players to free agency are compensated with additional draft picks. It is this second element that is the focus of this post. While other elements of the draft such as bonuses/slotting are also worthy of discussion, my intention is to discuss why the compensation system is fundamentally broken.

I had to buy spss for a stats course. I've got the software still, so I was wondering if there is anywhere I can download baseball stat datasets. No idea what I'd do with them, but it might be fun to play around with the numbers if I didn't have to type hundreds of stat lines into spss. Thanks.
The 25 Man Roster as Kitchen Tools
Putting together a major league roster is like putting together a kitchen. You need some of this, some of that. There are things you need and things you want. You’ve got a budget, and it’s easy to spend too much on disappointing performers. How would the Royals current 25 man roster look at the Bed, Bath and Beyond of roster construction?

A Gift for Dayton Moore
I'm finishing up my first semester of graduate school and considering which books to sell and keep. None of them are really keepers so my first inclination is to sell. One of my books though might do more good in different hands, and I'm feeling generous.

Book Review: Hi, Anybody!
I read quite a bit, and end up reading a lot of baseball books. I just finished with Hi, Anybody and thought I’d share my impressions. Please let me know in the comments if anyone finds this at all interesting, and would want reviews of subsequent baseball books that read/have read.
I’m a big Denny Matthews fan. For some one who doesn’t have/want cable and doesn’t watch the Royals on TV at all, Denny’s voice is the Royals to me. I like that he is even tempered and doesn’t wet himself over routine fly balls. I like that he has good stories and insight, but doesn’t insist on sharing every little nugget of information he has about everything. So, keeping in mind how much I like Denny Matthews, I really wanted to like this book.

Two questions about calculating replacement level
Apologies if this is evident to others, or if it's already been answered, but I had a question about replacement level.
