POLL: Has your opinion of Orton changed?

I just want to take a quick poll.  I know that games like this tend to elicit a lot of opinions.  But many of them are from people that had the opinion all along and might just be louder now....

The Broncos Roster, Then And Now: #3 - Regular Season

I did a couple of these in the preseason, but it's far more relevant now that we've made final cuts.  What I'm going to do is look at each position grouping compared to last season, and see who...

Ryan Harris: Herniated Disc, Back Surgery

Wow... I hereby take back every criticism I've had towards the Broncos staff for their lack of commitment towards Harris. What are the chances we had foreknowledge of this?

Is Quinn Making Orton Expendable?

One of the main counterpoints I've read against trading Orton is that we want a fallback if we start Tebow.  Sure, maybe it's worth it to "see what we've got" with Tebow, but if the Grand...

Mario Fannin Injured?

Just a twitter message... apparently he's being carted off, can't put weight on it.

Ryan Harris Likely to Re-Sign

Oh, happy day! This will be great news if it happens. We'll finally have quality OL depth. We could have Harris as top backup for both tackles, or Franklin as our tackle backup, or Franklin at guard with Beadles as 6th man, which was the original plan for him anyway. Lots of options!

Perrish Cox Impregnated Alleged Victim

Moreno (and Tebow) Are Pretty Good At Breaking Tackles

Another examination of broken tackles, this time on offense. Moreno was apparently tied for 15th in broken tackle rate, which is pretty good given that this is among all offensive skill positions. Note what they say about Marshawn Lynch, that ability to break tackles is not the same as ability to break through the line. Also check out Tebow's statistic keeping in mind he played less than 1/4 of the season.

Shocker? Broncos Very Good At Tackling In 2010

This shocked me, anyway. I would have thought a defensive performance that poor would have included a lot of broken tackles. But look at where we are in the rankings, compared to a team like Houston. What does this mean? I think it's yet another reason to consider that our poor defensive performance was not so much about talent as it was about coaching and scheme.

One Good Thing About Nate Jones...

He was apparently a very good tackler in 2010. See the right side of the lowest chart in this article.

Our Defense and Run Defeats

I posted a couple of earlier links along these lines, highlighting DJ Williams in particular. I misspoke though - he was good at defeats overall and very good at Pass Defeats. But in this set of stats, he's one of the worst at Run Stops. This could of course mean that he was just coming in to save plays after the DL failed. But it could also mean bad angles. But check out the DL stats also. This is where it gets mind-blowing. Before reading the link, try and predict who of our linemen you think would be in the top ten of DL run stops, and who would be in the bottom ten.

DJ Williams and Pass Defeats

I posted last week an item showing that DJ Williams was among the best in the league last season (#11) at "run defeats". Here's the accompanying stat, "pass defeats" - DJ ranks one slot better at #10.

DJ Williams "Defeats" in 2010

Just thought I'd point out that DJ Williams was #11 in "Defeats" in 2011. (Defeats are a good thing.)

Tim Tebow's Yards Per Attempt

About Tim Tebow's alleged "accuracy problem". People talk about how he only had 50% completions last season. Remember to keep in mind that it's a lot easier to complete a checkdown than it is to pass downfield. And it's harder to complete a long pass. There is a way to combine a quarterback's accuracy with how long his completions tend to be, however. It's called "Yards Per Attempt". It's how many passing yards a quarterback has, divided by how many pass attempts - not completions - they had. Short passes aren't worth a whole lot unless they become touchdowns. Click through to the link and you'll see how Tebow did in 2010. Top ten, easy. And if you sort by AY/A or ANY/A, you can see the same stat but with touchdowns figured in - Tom Brady goes to the top of the league, but Tebow is still top ten. And none of this takes into account his rushing abilities. I think even among us as fans, we haven't come close to grasping what kind of success he could have for the Broncos, and for the quarterback position in general.

Players Perspective on Lockout

Since Friday, the vast majority of the news we've seen about the decertification and lockout has been from the owners' perspective. Here's an interview with Jay Feely, one of the player representatives. He was also a professional financial advisor after college and before he became an NFL kicker, so there's a lot of good insight here on the dynamics behind the negotiations.
