Around SBN: Man Dies After MMA Bout In South Dakota

The tale of the tape:
One day, a man came up to the one who posts as ucla13_usc9 and asked, "What do you know about the Triple Option?" ucla13-er let’s call him Josh, Josh responded by saying "Give me three hours."

That night, Josh huddled over an old, outdated Windows XP computer with his old Pop Warner Double Wing Playbook unwrinkled out in front of him. He clicked away, occasionally hitting the undo button, and eureka! The first draft was composed!

Shortly thereafter, the same man came up to Josh and said, "That’s a little too complicated, can you make something better for our players?", to which Josh responded "Yep!"

That night Josh huddled over an old, outdated Windows XP computer with his new Macbook ajar to YouTube, with highlights of Oregon and Florida. Josh sat there writing every play... any play really, to assemble for the head coach when the new season began.

3 Weeks, and a carpal-tunnel syndrome later, Josh was named the graduate assistant coach. What lies in store for our hero? We’ll have to wait and see!

Bruins Nation Playbook Open Thread

[Change this if I don’t have the authority to name this thread an “Open Thread”]

As some of you know, I was given an opportunity to be an offensive coordinator at a high school, well the meeting is tomorrow for the playbook presentation.

I’m almost done with it, but I was wondering if any of you guys had a favorite (non-trick) play that I should throw in there or try to implement in my offensive sets.

I’ve drawn up plays from every Florida and Oregon I can find, you can use them for inspiration:

Thanks for the help in advance and fire away!

There was a bit of extra conditioning after practice, surely to make up for The Wall, but overall it was just a typical practice with higher intensity. [Now we can be concerned]

The Line between Optimistic and "Soft"

When Neuheisel capped off his interview by saying "'This will be fine,' Neuheisel said. 'We’ll make this a positive’", it told me that he is actually upset about this. I can see them running suicides from here to USC for the next two practices and then they’ll be in two or three-a-days the following week preceding Christmas. He can’t say that his team lacks discipline because as a Coach, you need to support your players (a la Lane Kiffin) and make sure that you don’t stir up any internal conflicts. That’s my defense of Neuheisel... since no one else seems to be siding with our coach.

Bruins Nation Wrapping Up Southern Cal

Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N

When is the last time UCLA lost to three (two really depending on how you look at it) mid majors in basketball, and USC in one weekend? I don’t want to ramble about things that I can’t speak intelligently about so I’ll leave the basketball debacle to you guys. As for football, I can raise my hand here.

The story of the game was of course the last TD, unfortunate for the Bruins, and really fortunate for the Trojans. Not in the sense that Southern Cal was shrouded by the likes of Plaschke, but in the sense that Peter covered up a disgustingly horrendous game.

Before we go into any heated debate over the rights-and-wrongs in the game of rivalry and competition, I would like you to absorb my opinion for consideration: I don’t really care about the call, I care about the fact that Peter cried about Stanford for trying to break the half-century mark and then did the same thing to UCLA. Also, watch the video of the "near fight" here. The fact that the UCLA players weren’t complaining before the PAT tells me that they didn’t care about the play, but the about fact that SC was taunting them and acting like they just destroyed UCLA (more on that after the jump).

A Very Happy BN Birthday!

Kyle and Korey Bosworth are celebrating their 23rd birthdays on Saturday, which is also Senior day at the Rose Bowl! Some extra motivation huh?

Bruins Nation Calling ALL Bruin Fans

I can't think of a bigger game for UCLA. Everyone should be at the Rose Bowl this Saturday

Stadiums_ucla_medium

(courtesy of UCLA Athletics)

via sportige.com

This could be the turning point for UCLA football... UCLA athletics, UCLA fans, UCLA everything.

Just how much does this mean? Well this is how much:

Let's look at the past few "Great Coaches"

  1. Pete Carroll 6-6, next year 11-2
  2. Bob Stoops 7-5 , next year 13-0 (National Champion)
  3. Les Miles 7-5, next year 11-2

Bowl Eligibility is the best way to start off any "good" coach's tenure, and we are 1 game away from that. That 1 game can be the difference from another Dorrellian spinout, and a great "empire".

Don't you want to be there? It is senior day. It is the day of pivotal importance.

Be at the Rose Bowl on Saturday

Leave me a comment if you are going!

Bruins Nation I Froze For The Bruins

Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N

This day is finally over. Throughout my long road history with the Bruins, I have never been in a "snow bowl". So before I get underway with this post, I would like to mention that UCLA has seen it all this year from the golden sun of the Rose Bowl and the Orange horizon at Neyland, to the surreal frozen Martin Stadium. This is definitely one of my favorite seasons... even with all the losses.

Anyways, after the long, boring drive from Spokane’s Pine forests to the bland, boring, and depressing rolling snow covered farmlands of the Palouse, I decided to go into the stadium really early this time around. I whipped out my iPhone and captured this scene; (All photos taken by yours truly)

Personally, I’m in a love/hate relationship with Martin Stadium. I think that this is the definition of old-school, college atmosphere football. It is so intimate, and close knit with the town and campus that it just seems to "sink" right in to its place (For those who have been there, you know what I’m talking about).

I’ll go down to my seat, and do some analysis after the jump.

Sorry if you can’t see it on my iPhone camera, but if you can, look at the PAC 10 logo on the 20? What do you think of this "Conference-alism"? Can you say... era of good feelings?

I was bored today so I decided to use EA’s Teambuilder feature to make the new jerseys... then I got carried away and built the entire team from scratch based off of stats and comparison. Comments, suggestions? Oh you can download them on PS3 by entering my name (ucla13usc9) into the search bar in the teambuilder feature. Enjoy!

Oh, a few more things.
1. Danny Reese is put in as a QB, so put his as your second string until KP gets hurt, that way he can be the holder if you really want to get realistic.
2. When in the Wild Bruin, switch the package (right stick) to "Backup RB", or "Spell RB" to get Knox as your upright back. And in goal line, you can use "Jumbo Backfield" to get Chane back there.

Thanks guys

I had a great time talking to the ever classy Huskies before and after the game. If you made your way down to sunny CA, I hope you had a good time before the game at least. Thanks again John for joining us on the podcast as well. One last thing; you shouldn’t hire coaches from SC. It only leads to problems (JK) All the best Huskies

Bruins Nation 13-9’s Tidbits: Washington Edition

Just trying to keep the trend of consistency, I’ve been merging my blogs in the past together, and decided to go public with this week, and I’m trying to make a tradition out of it. (I still keep that blog moving aside from BN)

These tidbits are fairly random and don’t have any correlation or order so just read casually... no hidden messages in the transitions.

Kiss of Death?

UCLA 24, Washington 21: Got a feeling UCLA still has some gas left in the tank. And Huskies quarterback Jake Locker playing with a deep bruise in his thigh is worrisome for a team that can't win without him.

Bruins Nation How to Stop Locker and the Huskies: Pressure

Just a little something that I decided to put together. (Thanks goes to jtthirtyfour for the links to markups.com great site, just still a little buggy)... in the video analysis, I am sorry, but you're going to have to click on the link to get through to the videos. The embedding process seems to have eluded the sbnation html servers.

So here we go, this week is really going to be like Halloween for us on many degrees. Trick or treat. That's what I would call it. The trick results in a treat through this logic: blitzing will make this offense shut down. The only problem is we have a defensive coordinator who is a little shy to blitz.

Video analysis after the jump.

Bruins Nation This Feels Different... Sort of (An In-Depth Analysis of THE two Passes)

I am reluctant to post anything today or this week for that matter, but I guess... since things have been going lately, that this will be my final stab at getting anything across to you guys in any way shape or form, so here it goes;

Watching the final 10 minutes of this game has plastered a smile on my face, and I'll tell you why: we just broke the barrier.

The barrier between baseless, shallow, unexplainable losses, and positive, Dorrellian, feel good losses, with something to actually build on. For every loss that we have had to endure under Neuheisel, there were hardly any positives to magnify (I take that back, I believe the Oregon game last year had a load of positives). The only one, that I gathered at least, was that we now gained the ability to outwit and out-coach teams last year (hence, the wins over Stanford, Tennessee).

Yesterday, we broke the barrier. We stood toe to toe with the Beavers for 10 minutes, and were one dropped INT away from possibly sealing the victory.

Of course, if you know me, I don't want to look at the significance of this game, but rather the "kinetic physics" of how that last quarter actually came to fruition, which put me, and many others at ease about the direction we are heading.

Follow me at the jump!

Bruins Nation Norm Chow's Airraid Offense: Inexperience Is The Problem

Bumped. GO BRUINS. - N

Since the generalization posts have come out today, I say we lighten things up and look towards the future a little ignorantly (smiles at Nes)

The goal of the Chowster is to get to the Air-Raid offense that he was so used to using back at BYU and U$C. Commoners, like me before research, say that balance is the best thing in an offense, but when you can replace different parts of schemes (ie intermediate passing game can replace intermediate running game) balance is inevitable. People that live by these schemes include the following

  1. Hal Mumme
  2. Mike Leach
  3. Lavell Edwards
  4. Norm Chow
  5. Bronco Mendenhall
  6. Chris Hatcher
  7. Tony Franklin
  8. Sonny Dykes
  9. Art Briles
  10. Mark Mangino

-via Chris from smartfootball.com

That's a pretty good list of OC's right?

Bruins Nation @ Arizona: UCLA Simply Doesn't Have The Talent (On Offense)

Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N

Let's start out with this:

I officially hate Arizona- plain and simple. I don't know if I was spoiled by Tennessee, but on my way to the stadium, 4 different fans made an effort to approach me and inform me that UCLA sucks. I'm not whining, but that was a little off beat for me. Then, inside of the stadium, I wasn't bothered too much, but this is what really bugged me: whenever Kai/Locke kicked the ball over the net in warm ups. The entire section cooperated to throw the football back and over the stadium wall. That's just blatant stupidity. I hope that 1,000 people is enough to prove to you that I hate Arizona and their entire program. Enough of this though.

Bruins Nation Bizarro World: Let's become SC Fans

I'm just sick of this, UCLA is terrible, let's just go and try to see what winning is like for a change. I mean, every time that UCLA gets something going, they say, "haha, stupid fans, believing in us". This fan base has taken a mental beating, we should be rewarded for our sufferings. But no, we haven't. It's just a terrible situation to be in; we love something so much, but can't stand it. I hate losing more than anyone.

But then again, isn't losing...kind of fun?

Bruins Nation Frustration: Staying Level Headed After Second Heart Wrenching Loss

Rebumped. While we are all frustrated after two tough losses, no need to get carried away with ridiculous arguments based on unreasonable expectations. GO BRUINS.

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

I don't think I have ever been so frustrated coming out of the Rose Bowl. Today, the Bruins delayed the inevitable, but kept on challenging their limits, but showed weakness, but showed strengths, but, but, but...

The Bruins outplayed a much more talented team around 50 minutes today. Shocker right? They drove on the ducks, they stopped the ducks, they even "outkicked" the Ducks. But in those 10 minutes, UCLA proved to the world that they aren't ready to win consistently. I've heard a lot of negative words flying around this site, but everyone just needs to keep a level head, and maybe even shake themselves. More after the jump.
