Junior and the Kids Say THANK YOU!

Here is a photo of Junior and the kids from Saturday. Those who donated will be receiving the shirt that you see the kids wearing in the mail. It will have your name on the back! Junior and their kids send their hearfelt thanks for your help in making this a great experience for them. GO BRUINS!!!

A while back I put up a fanpost about Junior Taylor bringing kids to the Rose Bowl in conjunction with the "I'm going to College" Program. See this post for reference: Help Junior Taylor Bring Kids to UCLA . With the help of BN, Junior raised enough money to bring 20 kids from the football team he coaches at Champion Schools in Phoenix, AZ to the game on Saturday! These kids are SO excited and so is Junior. He would love to meet any of you, especially those who donated so he can thank you personally for your help.

Junior and the kids will be outside the UCLA Bruin Game Day party in Lot H - see map here - around 1:15pm. The kids will be wearing light blue shirts that say "I'm Going to College 2008" and "Champion Schools - UCLA". They will be outside the main entrance to the party, so even if you don't attend this tailgate, you are free to come by and say hello. They will probably be there until about 1:45-2pm since they have pregame field passes and will want to head in early.

Congratulations to the kids are also in order - they are the city and state champions for 2008!

Stanford at UCLA Videos

Well, better late than never right? I had some trouble converting these videos from the way my camera records them (in HD). It's really cool to look at on the camera itself or on my TV, but not easy for my computer to figure them out!

In any case, I wanted to share because I was LUCKY enough to be on the field again the the Stanford game. In my estimation, I think CRN should find a way to get us down there more often. We were there for TN and Stanford, both of which involved late touchdowns and WINS! :) I must apologize for the final touchdown video as I could NOT keep still. Also someone got in my way, but I figured it still gives you an idea of how great it was to be down there.

Let's get those Bears on Saturday. GO BRUINS!!!

I just came home and looked at the floor to check my mail expecting to see bills, credit card offers and coupons, but INSTEAD...

My UCLA Basketball Tickets arrived! Also included was a schedule with Darren Collison's picture on the front and a UCLA Basketball Fan Guide. Seeing DC play with Jrue Holiday is going to mean GREAT things Bruin Fans. November 3rd is coming!!!

What a great day! I was already excited but now I REALLY can't wait!

Help Junior Taylor Bring Kids to UCLA

Former UCLA Wide Receiver Junior Taylor (8), a close friend of mine, is doing great things as the Athletic Director of a foundation known as Champion Schools in Phoenix, Arizona:

He would like to ask Bruin fans to help his kids board a bus to the UCLA-Oregon State game in conjunction with the "I'm Going to College" program. Most of these kids are from economically disadvantaged homes and have never been to a college football game. He told me that he wants to show them that it's possible to attend the best college in the country like he did.

Update - 9/9/08: Junior sent me a letter that the kids are using so can get a more detailed idea of this program, which you can read after the jump.

Here is the letter:

I am a student at Champion Schools, Summit Elementary in Phoenix, AZ. I currently am a member of the Flag Football Team for the 2008-09 School Year. My team and I will be participating in "I’m Going to College" on November 7th until the 9th. The objective of this program is designed to place young students into a collegiate atmosphere that stresses the excellence of both education and athletics. In hosting us, UCLA’s goal is to build positive relationships with young people in their own community and to motivate them to continue achieving goals in both school and life. The 3-day experience includes Pre-Game Activities, tickets to UCLA vs. Oregon State, a campus tour and we will attend a College Fair.

I am currently seeking financial sponsors to help me with expenses, and hope I can count on your support. In case you haven’t heard of Champion Schools let me give you a bit of background information. First and foremost our motto is "Work Hard. Play Hard". Here at Summit Elementary we believe that the discipline gained in sports activities supports academic performance and is transformative in young people. It is a high-standards school, providing the highest level of professional athletic training combined with a rigorous academic program.

The amount for our trip is $300 per student which includes all transportation, accommodations, meals and educational activities. I am asking contributors to each donate any amount to help me reach my goal. Is it possible for you to assist me by making a contribution? Any amount of contribution would be appreciated. I will plan to give a speech and share my journal, photographs, and experiences with contributors upon my return.

My program payment is due October 6th. I have enclosed a contribution form for your payment reference and a Tax Credit form so that you can receive a Tax Credit in the amount you donated. College Football News Rankings

Colllege Football News rankings have UCLA at 19 and BYU at 36. The Vols would like this site as well as the writers believe TN will be in the SEC title hunt. They believe we beat a very good team last Monday night. CFN has a very comprehensive site and I find they are often right on. Each ranking will show why the team should be ranked higher and lower and they update weekly. Apparently they didn't feel our bye week was worthy of falling out of the rankings!
