United Nations Award for the DBacks
?? Yeah, but this is part of what the press release says:
"The award names the D-backs as the most positive team in the world and is viewed as a 21st century peace prize for honoring and recognizing organizations that are positively impacting their communities through corporate responsibility. "
Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field to get solar shade from APS
The structure will shade about 17,000 square feet of the plaza and include exhibits on renewable power and energy efficiency, according to APS.
The structure with red-and-beige panels matching the Diamondbacks' team colors interspersed with black solar panels will shade most of the area between the stadium and the building that houses Sliders American Grill to the west, architectural renderings show.

drawing doesn't look too bad. Personally, I would rather have large trees doing the job of shading the plaza, but that could take 20 years, so I understand the reasoning. construction starts today, so it will be done by the all star game too.
GM: Diamondbacks will try pitcher Owings at first base in spring - Big League Stew - MLB - Yahoo! Sports
"Using the bat makes a lot of sense for Owings, who has — shall we say — struggled on the mound after being pretty good as a rookie in 2007 and in the first part of 2008 with the D-backs. He has a 5.11 career ERA in 410 innings.
By contrast, it's Owings' bat that has always attracted more attention. Owings has a career line of .293/.323/.538 with nine homers in 198 plate appearances."

NCAA bans Arizona State baseball from 2011 postseason
ASU plans to decide by early next month if it will submit an appeal of the postseason ban to the Infractions Appeals Committee.
"We disagree with some of the findings," said Virgil Renzulli, ASU Vice President of Public Affairs. "We think the postseason ban is excessive."
In a written response to the decision, ASU said the lack of institutional control violation is "inconsistent with the fact that overall ASU had and continues to have a very strong compliance program," as evaluated in the Pac-10 2009 compliance review.

Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 3; It was the best at times it was the worst at times.
2010 Season Record: 65-97.
So, here we are, 6 months later and the Diamondbacks 13th season is in the books. A season that started with cautious hope ends in frustrating matter. We sent out Rodrigo Lopez and the Dodgers countered with an old favorite, Ted Lilly. The Diamondback offense once again reached double digits in strike outs with 12 of them and was unable to really get anything going at the plate. And thanks to this our place in 3rd is secure for Tankapalooza 2010. More details of the game and the season in general after the jump.
(OT) Busted! Reds reported after smoking victory cigars in clubhouse
Also watching at home on television were at least five whistle-blowers who noted that the Reds were violating Ohio's indoor-smoking ban. They called Cincinnati's health department to report the team and now the Cincinnati Enquirer reports the club is under investigation.
In case you're wondering, the answer is yes — I'm extremely sorry to report that there are people living among us who would actually do this.

Hall & Gonzo Chat with Season Ticket holders
Before last night’s game, the 28 game partial season ticket holders were invited to a chat with Derrick Hall and Luis Gonzales . There were two sessions: one at 4:45pm held in the 300 level and the 5:15pm held in the Diamond Level. I was at the 5:15 event. I would say there were between 75 to 100 people at my event.
I understand the nature of these kinds of chats in that they are more general in nature. Saying that though, I thought there were enough hints and clues dropped though to get an idea of their thinking in the FO. I went with my best friend who is a baseball fan, but doesn’t have the same passion for the sport like I do. I mention that because after the chat, he and I were comparing notes and we reached different conclusions. Below are the items covered in the chat and the question/answer session afterward and I will try and keep my biases out of it.
The chat started out with a heartfelt thanks to us fans for being there. He acknowledged how difficult the season has been and appreciated our support. He reminisced on the 2007 season a bit and wants to get back to that level soon to capture the heart of the state like the NFL Cardinals did recently in their run through the playoffs. He wasn’t begrudging the Cardinals their success, just wanting the Diamondbacks to get back to that level of excitement.
Kurt Gibson: Really appreciates the work he has done with the team since taking over. This drew a solid round of applause from the audience. Alas, he didn’t use the word ‘fiery’, but Hall did mention the intensity and appreciation of the game Gibson brings to the clubhouse. Hall referenced the game against Jimenez the night before in which we were down 4-0 before our first at bat. He said that earlier in the season, the team appeared to ‘give up’ and that it was something we all could see and feel, but now the team is fighting back. While this was brought up during the Gibby talk and I believe Hall thinks Gibby is part of the reason why things have turned around, something else was said later about the clubhouse that I will cover in a bit.
There was no mention if Gibby was staying or not, though the hope that he does came through loud and clear. Hall talked about the meeting he set up between Towers and Gibson. Their meeting lasted 2 hours. Hall said he left after 45 minutes and that both Gibby and Towers were on the same page, speaking the same language. He mentioned how much Towers liked Gibby after the meeting.
The Kevin Towers hire: Very excited about what Towers brings to the plate. Hall talked about the trades Towers has done and the way Towers believes in building a team. Hall made a point to thank Dipoto and appreciation for the work he’s done to restock the farm system at the trade deadline. Hall stressed the different philosophy in team building between Josh Byrnes and Kevin Towers. Byrnes paid no attention to the bullpen, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle, versus Towers belief that you build a team from the bullpen out: starting with a legit closer, then to the set up man, and so on. Hall stressed the point in hoping DiPoto would stay on in some form with the team.
The clubhouse: This was one topic that really stuck with me as it was mentioned more than once in a couple of different settings. There were no names mentioned, but Hall pointed out how the atmosphere has changed completely after certain somebody’s were traded away. Hall mentions how Gibby is making sure the players are making time for us fans for autographs and such. He tells how a former player on the team would complain ‘why should I make time for them when they don’t bother to show up?’ Gibby told this player that ‘he was the reason we stopped coming’. I am only guessing, but it really sounds like it was a pretty toxic atmosphere in the clubhouse. I got the impression Hall was giving Gibby some credit for identifying those toxic teammates and helping to get them out of here.
Starting Pitching: Extremely pleased with Hudson, Kennedy, and Enright. Feels good going forward with these three on the staff. Hall mentioned that we should expect to see the starters limited by pitch count. Why risk potential troubles with us clearly out of the hunt. The three mentioned have never seen the number of pitches thrown before in their young careers as they have so far to date.
Strike outs: Not happy, hinted at some personnel moves. Hall flat out said this team cannot afford to have so many players who are prone to strike outs on the roster. Wants to move those players and bring in ones who can just get the ball into play instead of swinging for the fence.
Question and answer session:
Question of who they (Hall and Gonzo) thought had progressed the most this season and who and regressed the most. Mark Reynolds was mentioned first in the progress side of things. Both hosts thought the world of him and his attitude towards the game (applause from the crowd). The strike out thing was mentioned, briefly, but Hall and Gonzo both agreed his defense is a huge improvement. Stephan Drew-blossoming into the player we all hoped he could be. Kelly Johnson was mentioned and of course, Chris Young. No mention was made of anyone who they thought had regressed.
“What in the world does Mel Stottlemyre Jr. have to do to get fired?” – older gentleman in front of me. This got a good chuckle out of the crowd. Danced around this, but did say he expects changes to be made in the coaching staff now that a GM has been hired and with a decision on Gibby probably a few weeks away now.
Humidor-seems to be backing away from any changes to either the field/dimensions or using a humidor. Hall said he would rather build a team that could take advantages of our park. Gonzo pointed out changing the lines of the park could back fire horribly on us.
Bullpen: covered in the opening, but enforced the style of Towers in building a team and what the focus would be on. Danced around what players would and would not be back.
There was a question asked that I could not hear, but I found the reply interesting: Gerardo Parra is a great 4th outfielder and a good 3rd outfielder. Brandon Allen was tried in LF, (turned his head and away from the mic)… so for LF we are going to have to look at the Free Agent market. Doesn’t sound like Allen or Parra will be in LF, at least as a permanent starter.
There were more questions, but they and/or the answers were more general than the others. I thought it was a good session overall and the clues and hints I picked up on gave me reason to be optimistic for the future.

Arizona Diamondbacks need infusion of credibility
"Alas, here's what has gone down with the Diamondbacks, a team that actually looked like a budding dynasty in April 2008: Management is blaming the players for inexplicably weak performances, frequently referencing a core group of passive underachievers. They see the Dodgers' Russell Martin plowing into Diamondbacks with cleats flying and wonder why no one seems to fight back.
Players resent the inferences, responding with unspoken questions of their own. You gave us a manager who had never even coached? You left us with a bullpen that is historically, laughably bad? And we're the problem?"

Arizona Diamondbacks' Ken Kendrick indicates changes will be coming
"LOS ANGELES - The Diamondbacks' disastrous first two months of the season have prompted the club's ownership to consider all avenues of change, including a drastic retooling of the major league roster.
But Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick said all areas of the organization are under review, from General Manager Josh Byrnes' baseball operations department on down to the players, whom Kendrick says are drastically underperforming."
Texas Rangers file for Bankruptcy protection
"The 21-page filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Fort Worth, included a list of unsecured creditors headed by Alex Rodriguez, who's owed $24.9 million in deferred compensation six years since he was traded away from the team.
Other players on the list include Kevin Millwood ($12.9 million), Michael Young ($3.9 million) and Vicente Padilla ($1.7 million)."

What's right with baseball ::
The best thing about baseball is that it demands patience from its audience, and patience, as we all know, is on the brink of extinction. You have to wait for something to happen with baseball. You have to work for it. It might take awhile. You can't push a button, click a mouse or fire up an app to feed your craving for action.

MLB in discussions over 'floating realignment'
Under the concept, teams would be able to decide where they'd want to play in a given season based on geography, payroll and willingness to contend. SI.com, citing an unnamed source who is familiar with the discussions, notes that a team couldn't move into a division more than two time zones beyond its home city — say, the Rays or Orioles trying to join the NL West.

You have GOT to be kidding me..... I thought it was the sick dream of one Tom Verducci, but I have heard this mentioned the last two night now. This is someones serious idea to make baseball more competitive??? Seriously?
To be fair, this idea is being supported by a 14 member panel of executives and managers. I for one, hope it never, ever sees the light of day.
What do the rest of you think?

Action, Jackson: Outfielder feeling good | dbacks.com: News
Felled by a serious bout with Valley Fever last season, Jackson played in only 30 games and had 99 at-bats. He felt so fatigued and out of it, the D-backs shut him down for good on May 11. After a successful tour playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic, he's ready to step back into the starting lineup.
For Diamondbacks' Hinch, shock factor has worn off
"Experience, the adage goes, is a hard teacher because she gives the test first and the lesson afterward. As important as the lessons were the relationships. Those are built on trust. Trust is earned through time.
Therefore, it's easy to see why Hinch is so excited to start his first full season as Diamondbacks manager. His first season with his players, his coaches.
His first season with his team."
I was less than thrilled when AJ was named manager, but was willing to give him time. For me, jury is still out, but I can say I am feeling better about it.

Arizona can't afford to lose the lovable losers
I know this will come as a great shock, but Dan Bickley wrote this up.
I was just curious as to how other DBack fans felt (who live in Arizona). There are a couple of good points made in the comment section for both for and against. I'll leave my thoughts out of it.
D-backs in battle to stay relevant
normally, I'd quote a snippet from the piece, but I found this tidbit from a reader more telling:
"The only way fan sentiment is going to change for this team, right or wrong, is if ownership dumps money into it like Colangelo did, to completely rebuild the fan base all over again through purchased success. And that means winning.
The D-backs need to win if they want to stay relevant, and by doing that, they have to spend money. Simple as that. "
Oy Vey
Byrnes, D-Backs may be close to split
Perhaps it's just the nature of the beast. The three-year, $30 million deal created expectations he was unable to meet, and everyone got frustrated.
But everyone can learn from this.
Some say the fans deserve partial blame for the contract, because they were the ones who pressured the team to hand it out. We don't buy it. The front office shouldn't let straw polls dictate roster decisions, especially when the fans' favorites can change so quickly. It seems this was a lesson learned the hard way.
