Another perspective on yesterday's practice at AT&T, along with an unofficial 2-deep projection
Some highlights: "Maynard was sharper today – while he wasn’t perfect, he made several nice throws and also hit KA21 multiple times on timing routes. Using the "family tree" to great effect, they connected for a couple TDs during red zone drills. In fact, the last play of practice was a scramble and perfect pass by Zach, finding Keenan in the back of the end zone, after Keenan had shaken off the DB. Bridgford and Mansion also did some nice things, and Hinder continues to show nice touch and looks very fluid out of the pocket." "The defense again had a solid day, led by the D-line. King and Coleman rotated in with the 1s often, and found themselves in the backfield stuffing ballcarriers more than once. Scarlett and Barr also made a few nice tackles, including one play where Scarlett shed a block and chased down Debo from behind . While the LBs were solid, McCain had another spectacular day, recording both a sack and a pick, and also knocking down a Maynard pass with his long Inspector-Gadget arms. Based on his play so far, there’s a pretty good chance he could be starting by the FSU game."

Here's a good first fall camp practice report, from my buddy's blog. A few highlights:
Many of us Cal fans will be excited to hear that Brendan Bigelow – rumored to be fully recovered from his knee injuries – participated in RB drills and 7v7 & 11v11 sessions. He was wearing a brace on his right knee (reportedly as a precautionary measure), and while he didn’t look to be fully 100% yet, he showed flashes of the speed and moves that made him such a heralded recruit.

Maynard looked solid, and appears to be the clear #1 at this point. He often took snaps out of the shotgun, and his mobility is as advertised – several times he escaped oncoming rushers and turned possible sacks into positive gains, even diving once for a first down. He has a live arm – he regularly hit receivers in stride, and clearly has uncanny chemistry with his brother Keenan Allen. Case-in-point: on one play during 11v11s, Zach hit Keenan perfectly on a quick-slant, which Keenan caught in full stride then turned upfield for a 70-yard run-after-catch TD.
Hardy Nickerson Jr. receives a Cal offer - story by Moragabear at BearInsider
Just got back from having a late lunch in Oakland with my buddy - we were both at Laney earlier to watch practice. Here are some of my observations (PLEASE NOTE that this is just one fan's...
Some notable jersey #'s: #4 Avery Walls DB #14 Cecil Whiteside LB #15 Zach Maynard QB #34 Darren Ervin RB/ATH #35 Mike Manuel RB #40 Chris McCain LB #74 Matt Williams OL Also, a few OL have "gained" weight from last year: Schwenke 311 (from 285?) Demartinis 301 (from 285?) Schwartz 325 (from 310?) Rigsbee 284 (from 275?)
Some notables: - Cecil Whiteside is not listed (this probably confirms that he will grayshirt?) - Coleman Edmond (WR), Charles Satchell (DB) and Zach Maynard (QB) aren't listed either - Some FR jersey numbers: #21 Keenan Allen, #6 Tevin Carter, #7 Austin Hinder, #99 Gabe King, #33 Nick Forbes, #44 David Wilkerson - Some of our OL seem to have "shrunk" (Schwenke 6-2, Brazinski 6-2, Schwartz 6-5, Summers-Gavin 6-3, Siddoway 6-4) ***EDIT: C.Edmond is now listed, so it must have been an oversight ... Also, according to JO in today's CC Times live chat: "Jonathan Okanes: Satchell is done. He is taking a medical hardship. Can't remember off the top of my head what is injury is but I've been told he is no longer playing football." Preseason 2-deep is up now too - http://www.calbears.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/cal/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/depth-chart

And do you think McClain is hitting the weights hard? A: like i said before...we dont sign the papers for no reason..and i sure hope so...we all should be...its time to get deez rings"
