Dirk has become a hot name amongst up and coming coaches. La Canfora thinks so. PK also gave him high marks in ESPN's power rankings.

Vic's View of Young Secondary

-Michael from Arhus, Denmark: Your comments on the cuts and the trade, Surprised? -George from Jacksonville: So Courtney Greene made the team on one hit?
Vic: The only cut that surprised me was the Scott Starks cut. A couple of weeks ago, I had asked Jack Del Rio about the roster competition at cornerback and he said Starks had settled in as the team’s "nickel" back. I hadn’t seen anything that would change that thinking since then, so I just assumed Starks was the team’s "nickel" back and the competition was between Don Carey, William Middleton and Tyron Brackenridge. I think the trade with Cincinnati and the acquisition of David Jones was what resulted in Starks being cut. What the Jaguars have now is a young collection of cornerbacks. GM Gene went heavy at the position because he obviously likes the upside he sees in these players. It’s a premium position. You can never have enough of them. With every move, he’s positioning the team for the future. I think that’s obvious.
Vic: No, he made the team based on his full body of work. You know that. You’ve heard that said over and over. It’s more truthful to say you cut the team based on what you saw in the preseason games only. Ask yourself this: How many times did you see Greene miss a tackle or blow a coverage? I’m not gonna tell you that I saw him making a lot of plays, but I don’t remember him missing a lot of tackles and blowing a lot of coverages, either, and that has to count for something. The missed tackles and blown coverages had to stop. The memory of playing patty-cake with Justin Gage down the sideline and of what Dallas Clark did to the Jaguars last December would’ve been traumatic had the Jaguars stood pat at free safety. It had to end. I think we all knew that.

My view:
There have been several questions about the Jaguars' secondary asked lately. From, "Why Carey over Starks?", to "Who will be the starting safeties?'. Both are legitimate queries. None of the young men in question are proven. The only proof we have is that the guys who have been cut or moved had ample opportunity to prove themselves worthy of their roster spot. They proved disappointing. Now it's time for the young blood to prove it.

Big Cat Country Viator Predicts: The Practice Squad

The final 53 are set, at least for the moment. Trades and waiver acquisitions may still roll in over the days to come.

Some of the players cut have potential for development. I think it's time to take a guess at the young men that may fill out the Jaguars' practice squad. Here we go...

QB - Trevor Harris

RB - Chad Kackert

TE - Mike Caussin

WR - John Matthews

C  - Bradley Vierling

OT - Daniel Baldridge

DT - Ko Quaye

DT - Walter Curry

Possible candidates from waivers:

LB - Bear Woods was signed to Atlanta's practice squad.

DB - Myron Rolle was signed to Tennessee's practice squad.

Unforeseen players signed:

QB - Brett Ratliff

LB - Alvin Bowen

CB - John Destin

Practice squad complete. Missed 3.

Big Cat Country Viator Predicts: 53 Jags for 2010

The preseason is nearly behind us. This team has been evaluated from top to bottom throughout training camp. Position battles have been waged, individuals weighed, and a team tested. At this point jobs have been won or lost, it's just down to the deed. It's time to cut the fat from the meat.

Gene Smith will have the grisly task of breaking hearts and shattering dreams in the days ahead. Who will rise up, who will be sent away? 53 men will don the teal, 27 will fall to the turk. Here is my guess at which of these men will be called Jaguars...

Offence: 22

QB - Garrard, McCown

WR - Sims-Walker, Thomas, Dillard, Underwood, Matthews

TE - Lewis, Wilford, Miller

RB - Jones-Drew, Jennings

FB - Jones, Bolen

C  - Meester

OG - Nwaneri, Manuwai, Forney

OT - Monroe, Britton, Black, Haslam

Defense: 23

S  - Smith, Nelson, Alexander, Considine

CB - Mathis, Cox, Starks, Brackenridge, Carey

LB - Morrison, Smith, Durant, Allen, Wilson, Cutrera

DT - Knighton, Alualu, Douzable, Ellison

DE - Kampman, Harvey, Lane, Hart

Special Teams: 8

K  - Scobee

P  - Podlesh

LS - Cain

KR - Karim

PR - Mcgee

ST - Osgood, Owens, Greene

Predictions based on current roster. Suggestions for trades and waiver acquisitions could be considered for future speculation. Practice squad nominations will also be considered. Mistakes will be stricken from the record.

Wasn't there a story before last year's draft suggesting that Brian Cushing had used steroids? According to Schefter he is currently facing a 4 game suspension.

Tebow 22, Clausen 23, and Bradford 36. The high score is 50. I don't know how much this really means. VY got a whopping 6, and Marino scored a 13. There ya go.

La-la land will not get Jacksonville's team...at least not anytime soon. We're finally selling some seats...we have to buy 'em up or this ghost will always come back to haunt us. The Jaguars are Jacksonville's team, let's act like it.

I've changed the link, now it will circumvent PFT and take you directly to the article at the Las Angeles Times.

PK is reporting that Monachino will coach outside linebackers for Baltimore under Dean Pees. Congrats on the new job, Ted.

He's working. He's progressing. He's improving. Look for the Jags to snag him if he falls to the 3rd round. You heard it here first. Let the tears flow...your fears are coalescing.

I believe we will look to bolster our defense in the 1st. The 2nd is a wash unless we can work some trade magic. If he actually falls descends to us in the 3rd...he's coming home.

Bet money!

The ones we thought, plus a few more. I like the moves. This is going to be an exciting draft...leading into an exciting season.

Go Jaguars!!!

The Jacksonville Jaguars are filling out their coaching vacancies.

Per Chicago Tribune - Jaguars hire Rob Boras, former Bears TEs coach. Another apparent coach swap...

Byner from the Titans, Boras from the Bears...and we already know we've hired Cullen as our D-line coach. BCC, you've got your new coaches.

Let the judgment begin.

That's the word anyway...
Who called it? Hawk, where ya at?!

Well, I guess we pulled the 'ol switch'r'roo with Tennessee. So, we can match Pola's knowledge of our team with Byner's of the Titans. Well played, Jack!

Welcome aboard, coach.

Big Cat Country Big John: A Second Opinion

I've been thinking about all the hub-bub over the "Saga of John". So I decided to do some research on the subject matter. The information I've found has inspired me to look at this situation from a new perspective.

Initially, like many of you, I was under the impression that John was just laying down and trying to dodge the hellish Jacksonville heat and humidity. Considering that John has been a virtual ghost at practice over the last couple of years, I don't think that was an outlandish supposition. Given his penchant for absence, John has earned himself a reputation of laziness.

I believe that Jack's reaction, words of fire and venom, was warranted and overdue. However, If John has indeed sustained an injury in this current scenario, we should allow him some grace. I don't know the man personally, but I'd hope that he wouldn't lie about such things. Who knows?

Some of what I found on the injury, I already knew. The rest is news to me. Basically, with a shoulder separation, a tear occurs in the ligaments that attaches the shoulder blade and collar bone at the joint. "Muy doloroso!" It is usually a result of a blow to, or a fall on the shoulder. We know that John was doing the Rollie-Pollie when he put his shoulder out, so that jives.

Here are some other facts that I've found.

019852403x

The separations are graded I, II, or III depending on the severity of the sprain. A grade 1 results in tenderness, but no actual separation. A grade 2 often means that a slight separation of the clavicle from the shoulder has occurred. A grade 3 is a more severe separation. In a worse case scenario, the collar bone comes completely out of it's normal position and pushes up on the skin of the shoulder.

Severe pain, limited movement, swelling, and bruising are the common symptoms associated with a separation. Grades 1 through 3 may require the shoulder to be placed in a sling. The arm should be immobilized, and kept from rising away from the chest to allow the ligaments to heal. In certain cases, separations heal by themselves in 2 to 4 weeks. A severe case could take up to 2 months, but that usually coincides with surgery. If you return to action too soon you run the risk of worsening the injury.

Is John really hurt? I don't know. If he is, he deserves the benefit of the doubt. As well as time to heal. We won't know for sure without seeing the X-rays first hand. I think we all know how likely that is to happen. Maybe something good will come of this. He hasn't been stellar in recent years. Perhaps this will give rise to a young DT that will lead Jacksonville's defense back to dominance...minus an infirm Henderson.

The University of Michigan Health System - Sports Medicine was my primary source for the above information.

Music City Miracles Question of rivalry

This is a question that I posed to Colts, Texans and Jags fans recently. I've changed some of the wording to make it fit for you guys. The point is to gauge the levels of rivalry within our division. I mean no disrespect to any of the teams...

Tell me what you think:

Which team out of the rivals in the AFC South is most hated (or disliked, for the less passionate) by Titans fans? And why? For me it's the Titans. Jeff Fisher is so smug, and it's perpetuated by his team. I'm a Jaguar fan, so naturally I dislike the Colts. I could never hate them, because Tony Dungy is such a great man. Also Peyton is amazingly talented and funny...so it's hard not to like that charm. I hate losing to the Colts, but I halfway like the team because of the men that have represented it. The Texans, for me, are like the annoying little brother that has gotten big enough to start winning half the fights that you get into. The Titans, I don't know what it is beyond Fisher, I cannot stand. How do you all feel? Do you hate the Colts more than the rest, because they've spent so much time on top of the mountain? Is it the Jags? You guys seem to whoop the tar out of us more often than not...So, I'm interested in your take on the issue.
