Why Tim Tebow, Punt Protector, is the best thing that could happen to the Jets

Why Tim Tebow, Punt Protector, is the best thing that could happen to the Jets
and why he should be happy about it
The Choice
Remember the debate last year over which WR we should keep. Edwards would cost less but he did not have the "Name" that Holmes did by winning the SB MVP for another team. We made our choice and now we know if it was the right choice. If we had to select again, who would you select and why? Or should we have offered them both the same amount of money since they were equally valuable to the team, and let them self-select who would stay and who would go.
The case for Chad Pennington as backup QB
This was a comment on a previous post but it was a late entry
Chad Pennington has the record for the all time highest NFL completion % and who could be a better player-coach for Mark and McElroy. In many ways his game is similar to Mark, so he can understand Mark’s thought process. Plus he is a QB who would not cause us to quake in fear if he had to come into a game. He also has a connection to the Jets and our new OC. He would command instant respect and be a leader in the locker room.
Pennington is perfect, and there will be no hint of a QB controversy. He mentored Henne in Miami.
Pennington explained his philosophy.
"It doesn’t necessarily have to be a 40-yard throw down the field. It can be short or intermediate throws that turn into chunk plays," he said. "Coach (Sparano) recognizes the importance of chunk plays. It allows your offense to breathe a little bit and have more success. In the NFL you can’t methodically move the ball down the field every drive. You need chunk plays to make it a little easier."
"I watched the Jets a little bit on and off this season," he said. "I think the biggest thing for Mark is to use 2011 as a learning experience, really dive into the film this offseason. Learn from the film and just focus totally on the film and the work at hand, and use the year as a steppingstone to getting better. That’s the No. 1 key. You can’t just erase it and move away from it."
Pennington also put on his QB’s hat to remind fans of something else he thinks is important for Sanchez.
"You’ve got to remember he only played one year of college ball as a starter. He’s a young guy, only in his third year in the league. He never had the chance to make mistakes behind closed doors. He’s always been out in front of everybody because he’s been the starter. He must get better and mature. I just think it’s a matter of time. The ball’s in his court."
What is the story
I know this post is too short, but I could not get the fan shot to work.
I know that Bill B was our coach for one day, before he went to the Pats. But I have no idea why he did so. I believe we even announced he was our new coach and set up a press conference. I believe he wrote "I quit" on a napkin at the presser and walked out. But I have no idea what was true and what is not. If anyone know the full story. I would like the know the true story and the details why this occurred, and who was the coach we ended up with. Thanks
What I Don't Understand
The fans have been calling for our OC head for at least the last 2 years, but he was secretly extended last year, for 2 years which is until the end of next year,,We are told the team (FO) is still happy with him and he will be back with us next year.. Why?
People say our QB is no good, but I remember last year in big games, when our back was to the wall, that same QB would run a hurry up, two minute drill with no input from the side line and won game after game, after game, when all looked lost. What happened to him? Both the Miami and Giant game would have been won with the QB we had last year.
Of course he had confidence in his WR core. One of whom was badly injured on a play, so that he had to hop on one leg in order to complete the reception. He had the heart of, and played like, a Jet. We are told he asked to be cut because he wanted to be the #2 receiver, Yet he went to a team where he is the #4 receiver. Strange?
Our #1 receiver (in terms of yards) had a chemistry with our QB and seemed to be the go to guy who could stretch the field and pick up the big yards. He said he really liked playing for our team and would even give us a home town discount when he had to sign a new contract with us. He was the only Vet receiver to attend our QB lockout training camp (JETS WEST) to work on their chemistry and perhaps help the newer receivers on the team. His back-flip after our biggest win last year symbolized the joy and unity this team had last year. Yet the Jets did not even offer him a respectful #2 journeyman receiver contract at the end of the year. He ended up playing for a little more the a million dollars this year while his 34 year old slow jailbird replacement received three million. Why did we not respect him?
Our other #1 receiver (in terms of TD's) received all the glory because of the TD's, But he made it plain that he was going to play for the highest bidder this year. . He had no commitment to us, and did not attend Jets west during the lockout. He always had a slightly strained relationship with coaching staff, he did not start in the first game against the Steelers and after our lost to them in the playoffs, he criticized the play selection. There has been no glory for him this year because he does not have his partner who can stretch the field, so he has been doubled teamed all the time. So he gets frustrated and complains. Yet he got a contract worth close to 50 million dollars, so he knows he will not be cut. Why did we pay him so much, that we felt we could not afford the other part of the tandem.
Or has there been a two year problem between the receiving core and the OC?
And why did Rex not know about it?
AM I CRAZY?
I do not follow college football very much, so I can not do a mock draft, but I am an avid Jets fan so I do have a opinion on what the Jets have to do this off-season to improve the team. The way I see it our greatest need on both sides of the ball is speed.
Why We Lost to the Pats
Earlier this week I was reading the SB Pat's Blog completely enjoying the sense of panic that that was quite apparent there. However there was one posting that was designed to lift their fans spirit and after reading it I knew we were perhaps over confident and I started to worry about this game. The posting had this link which is about a quality I believe both BB and Rex share, and it is the reason Rex was so mad about the time out that Mark called just before he scored at the end of the half. Why would Rex say it was
‘THE STUPIDEST THING IN FOOTBALL HISTORY’
Pretty strong language for giving the Pats some extra time on the clock What evoked such a strong reaction?
Compensatory Draft Picks in 2012
This is a question for those who know much more then me.
In addition to the 32 picks in each round (of the NFL draft), there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as “compensatory picks,” are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying unrestricted free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player’s salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.
There is a limit of 4 total Compensatory Draft Picks for any team.
Should Practice Squad Rules Be Changed
According to NFL rules Practice Squad Players cannot have played more than nine regular season games or been on the active roster for an entire year, nor can players be allowed to spend more than two seasons on the same team's squad unless that team's active roster never dips below 53 players. This means that some players with potential will never get a chance. A prime example is Aaron Maybin, and after the jump I will tell you why.

A Warning
"U.S. officials said Thursday evening they have "specific, credible but unconfirmed" information about a potential threat against the United States coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks." If I were a Terrorist I would consider this weeks Jets/Dallas game to be the perfect target.

The Jets Lost Off-season
The off season is finished and the real games are about to begin. Two AFC champion games in his first two years and we all thought Rex was a genus and there was nothing to stop us from going to the SB this year. This was my view at the end of last season, but now, with less then one week to go before the first game I feel very differently.
Please help me to understand
I do not understand some of the moves the Jets made in trying to cut down their roster to 53 players. It appears to me that the approach we took was not the only one that could have been taken, There was a more productive approach then what we did.
Football Fix (Pt 5) Defensive Linemen - LOOKING FOR UNDISCOVERED DIAMONDS
PLEASE FIRST READ: NEED A FOOTBALL FIX (PT 1) INVITATION AND INTRODUCTION. CLICK ON IMAGE TO ENLARGE IT.
ANY UNDISCOVERED AND UNDRAFTED DIAMONDS THAT FIT INTO THE JETS APPARENT PREFERENCES IN DEFENSIVE LINEMEN. We seem to have found the formula the Jets use in choosing their Defensive Linemen, so are there any Undrafted Free Agents who have the potential to fit the Jets defensive line strategy and perhaps upgrade their Line in the future. My greatest mistake is that when I first started this project, I relied on NFL.com for my list of undrafted prospects, this list was much too restrictive. The use of multidimensional formulas can cut the largest groups of prospects down to a manageable level. The larger the group, the better, and the more likely you will discover that unheralded and little known player who exactly fits your needs. They can be the diamond in the rough that needs to be polished, but can be a very valuable part of your team in the future. These might be the best prospects for the Jets to invite to their Camp for a little competition. The problem with this group of players is that it is too small, they are too well-known, they have been picked over, and very few massive players are now in it. This is more of a test rather than a full-blown run. Drafted players are in brown and of course they are no longer prospects, until they are cut by the team that drafted them, undrafted players who are free agents are in purple.

Football Fix (Pt 4) Defensive Linemen - Multidimensional Analysis and Discovering the Jets Defensive Line Strategy.
PLEASE FIRST READ: NEED A FOOTBALL FIX (PT 1) INVITATION AND INTRODUCTION. CLICK ON IMAGE TO ENLARGE IT.
OF COURSE FOOTBALL PLAYERS ARE NOT ONE DEMENSIONAL, AND DOING WELL, OR NOT, IN ONE TEST DOES NOT TELL THE WHOLE STORY. All the possible Permutation and Combinations should be examined to find the one that is most predictive of success. The skills and factors exhibited in a test blend in with each other to create a unified whole. I did more than fifty tests which I will not post, I will only post the predictive and the most interesting results. But first, I will show how factors can interact with each other sometimes to produce surprising results. I will begin with PAT KIRWAN'S SPEED & QUICKNESS INDEX, which fused two combine tests into one index, much the same way he developed the Kirwan Explosion Index (KEI). I will use it to demonstrate the many possible Permutation and Combinations which can be configured starting with just those two combine tests. After examining this compound agility index, I will then examine an index which blend together KIRWAN'S SPEED & QUICKNESS INDEX and the KIRWAN EXPLOSION INDEX (KEI) to see if the factors he uses to measure agility and strength can give us an index which is superior in indicating how a prospect will fare in the NFL.
However, astonishingly, I discovered, that the with some modification, KIRWAN'S SPEED & QUICKNESS INDEX seems to be one of the core building blocks the Jets use in their evaluation of players for their Defensive Line strategy. When you have ten Jets in a database of 200 players, the fact that 3/4 of them appear in one chart is not due to chance, it is because they share something in common. What they share is those particular physical characteristics, as demonstrated in these combine tests, that caused them to be selected by the Jets. From that we can derive what are the characteristics the Jets look for in possible players, and what is the defensive strategy that guides the Jets selections. With this understanding, although I do not feel competent to do it myself, we can then discuss its strengths and shortcomings, and where it can be improved. Therefore, after completing my examination of the KIRWAN'S SPEED & QUICKNESS INDEX, we can look at this years draft class, and see which undrafted free agents may hold potential as future Jets, since they fit the Jets strategy.
Football Fix (Pt 3) Defensive Linemen - SPEED AND AGILITY
PLEASE FIRST READ: NEED A FOOTBALL FIX (PT 1) INVITATION AND INTRODUCTION. CLICK ON IMAGE TO ENLARGE IT.
While the test for strength are straightforward, Vertical Jump, Broad Jump and Bench Press, the tests for agility and quickness with their interplay are more complex, Forty Yard Dash, 10 Yard Split, 20 yard Shuttle, and 3 Cone Run. To begin with, unlike the test related to strength where more is better the tests for agility are just the opposite, the less time it takes to run any of the tests, the better it is. In addition, what does each test measure. Once again the strength tests are pretty straightforward, the Bench Press measures upper body strength, while the Broad Jump and Vertical Jump do the same for the lower body. It is pretty evident that the 40 yard dash and the 10 yard split measure straight forward speed, but other then in a theoretical sense what exactly do the 20 yard Shuttle, and 3 Cone Run measure and what are the interplay between these agility factors and on the field performance. Please note in these agility and speed tests I have subtracted the test results from a numerical constant in order to list from best to worse as with the strength tests. In the case of the 10 yard split that constant was 3, in the case of the 40 yard dash that constant was 6; but this was only done for ease of presentation. ONLY THE ACTUAL RAW NUMBERS WERE USED IN ANY CALCULATIONS.

Football Fix (Pt 2) Defensive Linemen - Mass and Strength
PLEASE FIRST READ: NEED A FOOTBALL FIX (PT 1) INVITATION AND INTRODUCTION. CLICK ON IMAGE TO ENLARGE IT.
TOP 50 DEFENSIVE LINEMEN ORDERED BY THEIR MASSIVENESS. Football is a game played by big men. In no position is that more evident than on the Defensive Line, Danny Woodhead would have never succeed as a Defensive Lineman. How important is Mass, when considered by itself, to succeeding in the NFL?

Need A Football Fix? An Invitation and Introduction (Pt 1)
Like all of you, I was bored and just waiting for the lockout to end so I could have my "fix" of football. And then I remembered 2 Fan posts on this site. One was by "joeklecko" and the other was by "Nu York Fan" and they both referred to a posting by "Waldo" which dealt with mathematically evaluating OLB's before the draft. http://www.footballsfuture.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=439601 . I would like to thank them for planting a seed that grew into a puzzle that chased away the boredom, and will keep my mind occupied for a very long time. But I can not solve this puzzle by myself, since I am a Jets fan and not a football fan. Outside of the Jets I am not competent to make any judgments, so I need your help and guidance. In return for your help, you might find the answer to a few questions that puzzle you. Why did Vernon Golshen fail? What is the formula the Jets use in selecting their Defensive Linemen and others? What should be the expectations for this years top two draft choices? Do the Combine Test really tell us anything useful about a prospect's chance of success in the NFL? Are there any undiscovered diamonds in this year's undrafted free agent class? At the very least, there should be a few lively and entertaining debates.
Please Help Me
I have a database of the draft prospects (269) in this years draft which I have loaded into a spreadsheet. There are models, (formulas) to evaluate Defensive players and compare them (see posting by New York Fan - Quandry with OLBs part 2 Free Agency and other possibilities) but I have none for Offensive players. Does anyone know of any models that I can use? I am also using these formulas for the players on our current roster to compare the to what might be available for an upgrade.
Our Mystery Rush OLB
We were all pretty upset when the Jets did not draft an OLB in this years draft. All of our OLB's were getting up in years, and we wondered why we did not draft one, although we did improve another area of need on the DL. Yet the question remained, why did we not take an OLB in the later rounds of this year's draft? The theories flew around, ranging from we were waiting until next year for a better class, to Crackback's (who I greatly respect) theory that OLB's were not important to Rex. It did not seem possible to me that we would leave this gaping hole in our defense. With our FA problem of Cap space, and the need to resign our own FA, it could not be we were looking to the solution in the FA market. We had to have the solution already on the team. So I checked out what we had.

How To End The Lockout Today
The way to end the Lockout today is to have some person who is truly being being unrepairable harmed to request it. The Players have said the lack of training camps is doing this, but the owners point to someone like Reggie Bush and say this is not so. And so, the stay on the injunction which would end the lockout continues. But there is one perfect person who everybody agrees is being unrepairable harmed, and meets the criteria to end the Lockout today. That perfect person to end this lockout would be an undrafted free agent from this years draft class. There is no doubt this lockout is doing unrepairable harm to them. This is the only thing the Judges need to lift the stay on the injunction, and end the lockout. These prospective players can not even contact teams, to see if they have a chance to become a professional NFL football player. This person would not even have to be a good player, maybe they don’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell, but they are being harmed because they will never know. Any players out there hear me, please.

How to End The Lockout Today
The way to end the Lockout today is to have a person who is truly being irreparably harmed to request it. The Players have said, in their suit requesting the end of the lockout, that the lack of training camps is doing irreparably harm to them. However, the owners point to someone like Reggie Bush, who said the lockout was like a vacation, as proof that this is not so. The NFL says that ending the Lockout would harm them. Thus, it is like a case of "He said, She said" with no irrefutable proof as to the impact of the lockout. It seems, the Judges in the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, lacking this proof as to the impact, have made no final judgement on lifting the temporary stay on Judge Nelson's injunction. Thus, the injunction which would end the lockout is not enforced, and the lockout continues. It is beginning to look like the earliest we can expect action is June 3rd with the formal hearing at the Appeals Court.
Solving A Problem
The Draft is over. Who knows when we can start to sign free agents. However, there is one thing that distresses me in the FA discussion. Because of a lack of cap space, it seems for every name FA we sign, we must let one of our present players go. Yet, for the last two years we have been in the AFC championship game, and I think we have a good team. I do not want to make any wholesale changes if we are not forced to. We are not perfect, otherwise we would have won the SB, but we have improved with the just completed draft which focused on our defensive line. I believe in our Safeties, and CB's and do not want any changes there. I do not want to upset the chemistry and balance of the team we presently have, but we must improve our pass rush. While our new DL may improve our interior pass rush, we must have a better pass rush from the outside. The following Undrafted Free Agents could offer the solution to our problem in the future, and would cost us nothing now.

Baldwin-Wallace defensive end Keith Darbut.
Darbut is 6-foot-4 and 229 pounds, and attended the Akron Pro Day on March 10. The 22-year-old Baldwin-Wallace team captain ran forty times of 4.38 and 4.40 with a 1.42 ten-yard split that was better then any pass rushers at the Combine. He also recorded a 10-foot-6 broad jump and 38-inch vertical, benching 225 pounds 26 times, 4.45 short shuttle, and 7.28 3-cone..
I'M MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE !!
But I'm just one person, and by myself I can do nothing. But, if we were united, what could we do? Look at the people of Egypt when they united, they brought down a dictator of forty years, by just taking to the streets and expressing themselves. They had organized by using the Internet. We do not have to take to the streets, but we do need to express ourselves.
People when they organize and express themselves have more power, and can have an impact greater then they ever realized. Too many people say what can I do, give up, and then do nothing. It is time to stop doing nothing. I know we are all football starved, and look forward anxiously towards the draft, but sometimes you have to make a small sacrifice to obtain a larger goal. This lockout has already meant that there have been no Free Agents signed prior to the draft, some OTA's have already been lost, and the negative effects will keep mounting up. While Judge Nelson may enjoin the lockout, an expression by the fans about how they feel may help speed a solution, by causing both sides to consider the wisdom of any appeal. If the future TV revenues decrease, there will be less for both sides to fight over.
