Daily Norseman Sanford Wins Starting Safety Spot

http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Notebook_Jamarca_Sanford_earns_starting_job_at_strong_safety090511

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - After a competition that lasted the entire preseason, the Vikings have picked a starting strong safety.

Coach Leslie Frazier said Monday that Jamarca Sanford will start the regular-season opener on Sunday at San Diego. However, that doesn't mean Tyrell Johnson won't see the field.

Frazier said "we're going to end up rotating those guys," adding, "(Sanford will) take the first rotation and we'll let it play out from there."

Sanford and Johnson each started two games in the preseason. Johnson did not help his case in the preseason finale on Thursday night when he dropped what appeared to be a sure interception in the first quarter.

Sanford is the more inexperienced of the two, having started only three games since being a seventh-round choice of the Vikings in 2009. Johnson was a second-round pick in 2008, started seven games as a rookie in place of the injured Madieu Williams and then 17 games, including playoffs, the following season.

Johnson, however, lost his safety job to Husain Abdullah last season and ended up appearing in only seven games. Sanford is definitely the more aggressive of the two and that likely was one reason he has earned the starting nod.

Brinkley returns

Linebacker Jasper Brinkley was back at Winter Park on Monday, walking with the assistance of crutches after having season-ending surgery to repair his right hip labrum. Brinkley also had a brace on the middle of his right thigh as he watched practice.

Brinkley went to Colorado early last week to have arthroscopic surgery, which was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon.

"It definitely needed to be done," said Brinkley, a backup middle linebacker who also was given a chance to compete for the starting job on the weakside. "It wasn't something that you could play through."

This might sound familiar given that wide receiver Sidney Rice underwenthip surgery in Colorado last year and also was a patient of Philippon's.

In that case, Rice had attempted to avoid surgery the entire offseason before he finally decided to undergo the procedure. Brinkley was injured last season but in this case he said he did not know anything was wrong until he arrived at trainingcamp.

"It's one of those things that you don't know until the symptoms start arriving," Brinkley said. " ... It became clear something was wrong with me last week when it got to the point where I couldn't hardly run."

Brinkley, a fifth-round pick in 2009, has no idea when he initially suffered the injury. "That's the thing we're scratching our heads on," he said.

Brinkley always has been an aggressive player who loves to hit but it was clear early in training camp that something was off.

Brinkley in confident he will be ready for the 2012 season, but admits this is a bit tough to take.

"It's devastating to a point but at same time you have to be positive about situations like this," he said. "Things like this happen for a reason. Who knows what might happen in the future."

A cut in pay

Wide receiver Greg Camarillo might have made the 53-man roster in part because he was willing to take a paycut.

Originally due to make $1.7 million this season in the last year of his contract, Camarillo now will make less than $1 million. That will help the Vikings clear more salary-cap space as they look to gain flexibility in that area.

"My salary was too high for the spot I was on the depth chart," said Camarillo, who was acquired last summer from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for cornerback Benny Sapp. "You want to make as much money as possible. But at some point you've got to come to the realization as to what your value is and where you are on the depth chart. I've bounced around a number of teams and I hate doing so. I'm happy to be here."

Camarillo had 20 receptions for 240 yards and a touchdown last season after having 105 catches over the previous two years with Miami.

Quick hits

• CB Marcus Sherels is expected to open the season as the Vikings punt returner. Sherels, running back Lorenzo Booker and Camarillo all worked on punt returns after practice but it was Sherels who handled that role throughout much of the preseason.

• DT Letroy Guion said his "wind is up to par" and he has no concerns about taking on an expanded role while DT Kevin Williams serves a two-game suspension. "I really didn't pay attention to what was going to happen with Kevin," Guion said, "but I always prepare myself to be ready when the time comes."

• DE Jared Allen clowned his way through warm-ups wearing a helmet that didn't have a facemask. "I don't think anybody's ever gotten a concussion by just getting hit in the face," Allen joked. "So, just trying something new out, seeing if Coach would agree to it. He said I had to have a facemask

Canal Street Chronicles Mark Ingram : Bad News

Hey guys I'm a vikings fan from the south and i currently live in Huntsville, Alabama. Sooo let me just cut to the chase. Last night Mark Ingram came to Huntsville to sign autographs during the day and what not. That night he decided to party and get drunk or whatever. Well when he left the club MARK INGRAM GOT HIT BY AN 18- WHEELER. I'm not sure how much damage he has or if he is even hurt. I just know because the club he left is around the corner from my house. Umm ESPN hasn't even reported it yet so I'm kind of an inside link if you want to say you will probably be reading about it later.

God  bless and I hope he is ok.

Daily Norseman Sidney Rice made Favre look good.

Sidney Rice's breakout season back in 09 was magical. He caught everyball coming his way whether it was too high or too low too far left or right or in the stands. But most people say that Favre was the one making Sidney Rice look good since Rice struggled in his two previous seasons. Well thats crazy talk i'm not sure how skying over 2 defenders and making leaping catches in the redzone the quarterbacks doing. Sidney Rice is a under the radar monster at reciever and if we don't resign him it will be one of the biggest mistakes of the decade.

Daily Norseman Weird Idea

Today I was daydreaming while I was supposed to be writing my english paper for my final tomorrow. Then I started looking at highlights on youtube of football players that should be coming out next year. One player that crossed my mind was Alabama's Trent Richardson. This guy has the vision, speed, and more strength and better ball carrying than our very own Adrian Peterson does. Next year I believe Peterson will be hitting the 27 year old mark and he may start getting a little long in the tooth a few years later. So here is my crazy idea.

I say we use our own 1st rounder next year to draft Trent Richardson while trading Adrian Peterson, Christian Ponder, and our 2nd rounder to move up to whoever has the 1st pick of the draft and select Andrew Luck. Crazy right? But I mean why not speculate while theres nothing else to do?

We'd be adding a star running back that has the skillset of Peterson and Andrew Luck that experts say have very little to now flaws.

Trent Richardson in 2009 recorded 751 yards and 8 rushing touchdowns while splitting carries with 3 different running backs. In 2010 he recorded 700 yards and 6 touchdowns while catching for 4 and returning 1 kickoff return for a touchdown.

Daily Norseman Chad Greenway gets the tag.

The Minnesota Vikings will place the non-exclusive franchise tag Monday on linebacker Chad Greenway, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

<!-- end inline 1 -->

This means that neither wide receiver Sidney Rice nor defensive end Ray Edwards will be tagged and each potentially could become a free agent depending on what happens with the ongoing collective bargaining agreement talks. The current CBA will expire at the end of the day on March 3 and owners might lock out the players if a new deal isn't signed.

Since the Vikings didn't use the "exclusive" tag, Greenway can negotiate with other teams. If he receives an offer, the Vikings can either match the other club's offer or receive two first-round draft choices as compensation.

The 28-year-old Greenway had a career-high 144 tackles last season.

Teams have until Thursday to use their franchise tag. So far, only quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Michael Vick have received exclusive franchise tags.

Daily Norseman Mcelroy vs Dalton

Ahhh it seems as though the Vikings are in need of a qb in the upcoming draft. Assuming that our first two picks are used on OL and Defense, it'll be late when we take a QB. Two quarterbacks who i see sitting at our 4th round pick are qb's Greg Mcelroy of Alabama and Andy Dalton of TCU. Lets compare these two quarterbacks past two seasons.

Greg Mcelroy

2009-2010

17 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 140.5 rating, 61% completions, and 2508 passing yards.

Andy Dalton

2009-2010

23 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 151.83 rating, 61.6% completions, and 2756 passing yards.

Greg Mcelroy

2010-2011

19 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 166.94 rating, 70% completions, and 2767 passing yards.

Andy Dalton

2010-2011

26 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 167.02 rating, 66.2% completions, and 2638 passing yards.

Damn!!! These guys are pretty much identical. Andy Dalton has more touchdowns in the past two years but Mcelroy has definately taken care of the ball better. Their QB ratings are damn year identical but Dalton has the advantage while Mcelroy has a higher completion percentage. They both have also thrown for pretty much the same amount of yardage.

Things we must take into account:

1) The strength of the SEC is by far stronger then any conference in college football. Atleast 5 of the teams in the SEC in the past 5 years (Alabama, Florida, Auburn, South Carolina, Georgia) could win a series of 3 games against the best of any other conference. Therefore Greg Mcelroy's stats to me seem to be more impressive then Dalton's. I dont believe Dalton could bring his horned frogs into SEC play and have the same success.

2) Dalton has the ablity to move on his feet. Better then Mcelroy. Dalton had 5 rushing touchdowns compared to Mcelroy's 1. But I believe neither of these guys would have that much effect in the run game at the next level anyway.

3) One negative about Greg Mcelroy that i know of is that he holds on to the ball way too long sometimes. This accounted for 18 sacks and 30 sacks in the past two years. He needs to learn how to dump that ball off.

4) I havent seen much of Dalton so I really cant say much about him.

5) Greg Mcelroy is pretty smart. like really smart. like really really really smart. I mean the guy graduated as a junior. He's a Rhodes Scholar finalist and finished with a 3.82 GPA. This makes me believe that he has the capability to be able to pick up the nfl pro style offense quicker then usual. Again I'm not sure of Dalton's academics but no one else has said much about it.

***INTERESTING NOTE THAT I JUST FOUND OUT***

Greg Mcelroy lead his high school team to victory over Andy Dalton's team in the Texas 5A state championship in 2005.

But anyways what do you guys think? Who would you rather pick up with your 4th round pick.

Daily Norseman what the hell?

Last week i made a fanpost about how rediculous the league is getting with the fines. But this week it just got even more ridiculuos.

Joe Webb was finend 5000 dollars for a f**king facemask! What the hell? You fine a quarterback 5000 for a facemask? Facemasks are grabbed atleast once every two or three plays around the league, college, high school, hell even peewee.

But to make matters worse, Asante Samuel was fined 0 dollars for a helmet to helmet hit on a defenseless reciever and recieved no suspension. That same hit that put Rice out of the game with a concussion.

Wasn't the idea of these fines to help protect players around the league? So you fine the qb for pulling a facemask a little bit but you dont fine Asante Samuel for giving a defenseless player a concussion on a helmet to helmet hit?

Goodell needs to be gone because he is up to something. Something that I think wont benefit the league at all and will it will probably change the game completely.

Daily Norseman F the NFL

What in the hell is going on with the nfl these days? League Commisioner fining everybody for every little thing they do.

This week:

Kevin Williams got fined 7500 for a late hit. A late fucking hit! Thats what you get penalties for not fines. Shouldnt the penalty be enough i mean it cost you 15 yards and a 1st down.

Antoine Winfield got fined 7500 for hitting Cutler in the chin....the chin ladies and gentleman. Thats what that thick ass chin strap is for on Cutler's helmet to protect him from the hit. Not to mention 5'9 Antoine winfield was trying to slow up from hitting 7'6 Cutler on that play to keep from hitting him after he threw the ball. It just so happened that incedently the top of his helmet comes to Cutler's chin. What is Winfield supposed to do about that?

On top of that, Winfield got fined 10000 for wearing his socks too high. You mean to tell me that I have to pay only 193 dollars for a speeding ticket, but he has to pay 10000 for having his socks too high in the cold?

This makes no sense to me. Should the NFL players start protesting to these fines or what?

Daily Norseman Just a quick idea for the offseason

Would you guys consider the idea of signing T.O. and Mcnabb in the offseason?

T.O. is done in Cincinatti and was their best reciever this season. By his 14th game he pretty much had 1000 yards receiving and 9 touchdowns. This season would have been his best if wouldn't have gotten injured. If you pair this guy with a Sidney Rice threat over the top, he can work the middle and the top and have Percy in the slot then they can probably do some damage. I know he can be a cancer at times too but alot of that is overplayed in the media. He didnt cause too much attention this season. Plus Berrian should be gone and Owens should come alot cheaper.

Mcnabb is coming off a season where he feels like he was disrespected and benched. That probably could mean that he won't be there next season either. But he didnt have much to work with. He didnt have a running back like Peterson or recievers like Rice, Harvin, or potentially T.O. I think he would do a good job if he came to Minnesota.

Another thing is we wouldn't have to use our early first rounder on a quarterback, we can use it on a offensive lineman. Then we can use our 2nd or 3rd on a quarterback (Dalton, Mcelroy, maybe Locker slips tremendously) to follow mcnabb and webb. The rest of our picks can be used to shore up our defense.

Good idea?

Will Gerhart step up again? Do we play Booker more and give Percy a few snaps in the backfield?

Daily Norseman Cam Newton

What would you guys think about Cam Newton being quarterback here? Do you like him do you think he'd be drafted too high and out of reach? Is he too much of a risk?

Personally I really like Cam and he seems kind of like a Randall Cunningham kind of quarterback. He's 6'6 fast strong armed and he makes good throws. He barely throws interceptions too so thats a plus. He'd be perfect to go alongside Peterson, Rice, Harvin, Shank, and Gerhart in my opinion. We might even be able to lure in Darvin Adams to go along with him on the other side of Rice.

Daily Norseman Vikings discussing trade with Chargers.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5592256

The Minnesota Vikings expect to convene either Sunday night or Monday on whether to make a serious play for San Diego Chargers suspended wide receiver Vincent Jackson, according to team and league sources.

<!-- end inline 1 -->

Under a settlement reached Thursday, Jackson has to sit out the first four games of the season under suspension -- instead of six -- if he is traded by the Chargers to a new team by 4 p.m. Wednesday.

A team source said Vikings owner Zygi Wilf will be the final authority on a possible trade because Jackson wants a contract that will average $9.5 million per year and contain $30 million in guaranteed money. If the Vikings were willing to pay that amount, the Chargers are expected to ask for two draft picks, one of them at least a second-rounder for the Pro Bowl wideout, who is a restricted free agent.

However, the Vikings have some concerns about Jackson's character after he was suspended for violation of the personal conduct policy following a second arrest for driving under the influence. The Vikings did have success when they traded for former Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen, who also had been suspended after a pair of DUI violations.

<!-- end inline 2 -->

The Vikings are also weighing acquiring Jackson and whether it would influence future contract negotiations with Sidney Rice, who is currently out after hip surgery. Rice is expected to return in six to eight weeks. Also, the Vikings are paying wide receiver Bernard Berrian $7 million this year and they used last year's first round pick on Percy Harvin.

The Vikings are considering offering Jackson a one-year deal worth between $4 million and $6 million with a guarantee they will not franchise him next offseason. Under those conditions, the Chargers might be willing to take lesser compensation, such as a third-round pick they would have hoped to receive next April as a compensatory pick were Jackson to leave as a free agent. Even though there is a draft, there is come uncertainty about the compensatory pick formula, a source said.

Chris Mortensen is ESPN's senior NFL analyst.

Daily Norseman Percy Harvin injured

 http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/blogs/99688744.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiU9PmP:QiUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU

MANKATO -- Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin left the field Saturday on a cart after suffering an unknown injury during the Vikings' morning practice.

Harvin, the NFL's offensive rookie of the year last season, suffered a shoulder injury in 2009 but did not miss a game because of that problem. Harvin did miss several practices and one game because of migraine headaches.

The odd thing about what happened to Harvin on Saturday is no one saw him suffer an obvious injury. He did make what was perhaps the catch of the day in 7-on-7 drills when he bobbled a pass from Tarvaris Jackson but managed to catch the ball despite tight coverage from cornerback Asher Allen. Harvin's helmet popped off on the play as he made the catch, fell to the ground and then got up and tried to run.

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said in his post-practice news conference that he didn't even know Harvin had left on a cart until told by a member of the media relations staff. Coach Brad Childress was not scheduled to speak to reporters after the practice.

Cornerback Benny Sapp also left on a cart during practice but he was able to return to the field and said afterward that he had just experienced some cramping problems most likely because of the heat.

The other storyline from today's practice was the abuse that second-round running back Toby Gerhart received. Although the Vikings were in shoulder pads and shorts, Gerhart took at least three hits that made it feel like a full contact day.

The first came from linebacker Chad Greenway in a 9-on-7 drill and the second and third came during 11-on-11 work. Nose tackle Pat Williams delivered an impressive hit that sent Gerhart flying near the end of a play after the rookie from Stanford caught a pass from Jackson. Near the end of that period, Gerhart was the intended target of a pass from Jackson but took a solid hit from middle linebacker Jasper Brinkley.

"It's expected," Gerhart said of the hits. "I feel like I'm playing football again."

Said Williams: "I don't care who it is. This ain't college no more, there's grown me out there. They're paying  these college boys like they already played before. This is a different breed out there, this is grown men, it ain't boys no more."

Asked if he had anything to say to Gerhart as he was on the ground, Williams said: "I don't apologize to nobody. Get your [butt] up. Let's go. That's how I roll."

Some other quick observations from today's first practice:

  • Kicker Ryan Longwell made five of seven field-goal attempts, making kicks from 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 yards. Longwell missed his final two kicks, which were from 50 and 53 yards. The last attempt hit the right post.
  • Ray SmallDarius Reynaud and Harvin worked on punt returns. Reynaud, who has been moved to running back, held that job for much of last season.
  • Rookie quarterback Joe Webb was picked off by Greenway on a pass over the middle in a drill early on. It looked as if the receiver was supposed to be running a crossing route but Greenway was able to read the play.
  • Jamarca Sanford got several reps with the first-team defense and most of the time it appeared to be in place of strong safety Tyrell Johnson. It won't be surprising at all if a real competition develops for that job.
  • E.J. Henderson is in uniform and taking part in portions of practices but it's clear the Vikings don't want him having any real contact. Thus, Jasper Brinkley is getting the majority of the work at middle linebacker. This isn't a surprise considering Henderson is coming off a broken femur suffered last December.
  • Talked to cornerback Antoine Winfield after practice and he said his broken foot is fully recovered. Winfield saw action Saturday both at left corner and inside in the nickel and said he would be fine with playing inside if that's what the Vikings want him to do.
  • Cornerback Chris Cook got some work with the second team and watching the second-round pick you can see his ability in press coverage. Cook, who is 6-2, 212 pounds, has long arms and does a nice job re-directing wide receivers at the line of scrimmage.
  • The final two periods of the practice featured special categories (where team's work on specific situations) and then an 11-on-11 (team) period. Jackson got the work with the first team, as expected, and completed three of six passes by my count in team. One of the incompletions came when he tripped while rolling out but attempted to force a pass for tight end Visanthe Shiancoe on the sideline. Instead, safety Husain Abdullah stepped in front of the ball and picked it off. Sage Rosenfels and Joe Webb got two snaps apiece in team. Webb did not throw a pass, handing off to Ian Johnson and then pulling the ball down and running (he didn't run, of course) with it.
  • Finally, this doesn't come from practice but we should note that veteran receiver Kelley Washington, in whom the Vikings expressed an interest, has signed with Philadelphia.

Daily Norseman EJ Henderson is ready to go

http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/99284889.html

Middle linebacker E.J. Henderson, who broke the femur in his left leg in December, might be active when the Vikings hold their first practice of training camp on Friday. But odds are strong that cornerback Cedric Griffin will open camp on the physically unable to perform list because of knee surgery.

There were questions about whether Henderson ever would play again after his injury in a Dec. 6 game at Arizona, but he was able to do limited work in the Vikings minicamp in June and made it clear he planned to be on the field for the start of camp in Mankato.

Coach Brad Childress watched Henderson go through drills on Wednesday and said the veteran had "maybe just a little hitch," but that was it.

"He won't have any trouble cutting it loose," Childress said. "He's so adamant about wanting to be out there Day 1. He feels like he's lifted all these weights, done all the running, all the rehab and now you've got to play football. The only way to play football is to play football."

Childress and the Vikings medical staff plan to discuss Henderson's situation this week before making a determination.

If Henderson were to open camp on the "active" PUP, he would be allowed to rehab and take part in meetings but could not practice. The move would not impact his status for the regular season, and Henderson would count against the 80-man limit. Players placed on the "reserve" PUP at the end of the preseason aren't eligible to play for the first six weeks of the season and don't count against the 53-man roster.

Griffin is likely to be on the "active" PUP come Friday in order to give him more time to recover from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in his left knee on the opening kickoff of overtime in the NFC title game.

"As we sit here today, I can't see what merit it would have to have him out there running around," Childress said.

Griffin was hurt on Jan. 24, and ACL tears are projected as six- to nine-month injuries. The Vikings aren't going to want to take any chances with Griffin's recovery by rushing him. Lito Sheppard, Asher Allen and Benny Sapp all stand to get reps with the first-team defense at right corner if Griffin isn't active at the start of camp.

Etc.

• Wide receiver Bernard Berrian, whose average yards per catch dropped from an NFL-leading 20.1 in 2008 to 11.2 last season as he battled hamstring injuries, said he is "perfectly fine now," and "ready to go" for training camp.

• The Vikings will wait to see how wide receiver Sidney Rice (hip) feels when he arrives at training camp before making any determination about whether to go slow with him. Rice was injured in the playoffs and has seen specialists, who did not believe the injury required surgery.

• The Vikings agreed to terms with seventh-round draft pick Mickey Shuler Jr., a tight end out of Penn State, on a four-year deal. Shuler's signing bonus will be around $63,000. The Vikings have reached deals with three of their eight picks, including linebacker Nate Triplett (fifth round) and fullback (seventh round). Second-rounders Chris Cook (cornerback) and Toby Gerhart (running back) have yet to come to terms.

Daily Norseman Favre: "I'd love to go beat the Saints"

Al Jones of the Biloxi Sun Herald has become a close friend of Brett Favre over the years and he had another interview with the Vikings quarterback on Thursday morning.

In this story posted online, Favre told Jones that "I would love to go beat the Saints. I know I can still play at a high level. Last year was a great year, but it could have been better (winning NFC Championship)."

The brief story -- Jones will have a full story from his interview on Friday -- says Favre hasn't ruled out returning this season and that he is riding a bike 8 miles as part of his rehab from ankle surgery. Favre told Jones that his rehab is on schedule.

Almost everyone expects Favre to play this season and this story is just more proof of that.

Favre should really just put a end to the madness and tell everyone ( which 90% of us already know) that he's coming back.

Rookie Joe Webb clearly has impressed the Vikings with his efforts this offseason.

The quarterback got second-team reps for both of today's indoor practices at Winter Park, leaving veteran Sage Rosenfels as a spectator for much of the time. Tarvaris Jackson got the first-team reps in both practices. By my count, Webb completed six of nine passes during team periods in the second practice.

Rosenfels, by the way, declined to comment afterward.

I have to get working on a daily story for the paper, but it's worth noting cornerback Antoine Winfield expressed confidence that not only is his broken foot healed but that he will be able to play the left corner for another year or two before making the move inside to the nickel.

Winfield does not sound convinced that he will ever end up playing safety, something that many fans have discussed. "I haven't played safety since high school so that would be a big change for me," Winfield said. "We'll see."

We'll add more highlights from the second session once we're done working on daily stories.

Joe webb is one of my favorite new weapons of this team. He's athletic, smart, and can play either QB or WR. He's also from UAB which is the school I will be attending next year for my freshman year. During the minicamp he's been getting most of the reps with the 2nd team (probably meaning the Vikings dont like what they see in Rosenfels).

So what could this possibly mean for him and our team?

Daily Norseman terrence cody

Ladies and Gentleman i think we may have our future phat pat replacement. Terrence cody, the big 6'5 355 pound senior out of Alabama.

Cody made an immediate impact for the Crimson Tide defensive line, recording four tackles—one for loss—in a 34–10 rout of the Clemson Tigers. He and the rest of the defense also held the Tigers to zero net rushing yards.[10] With his presence in the middle of the Crimson Tide defensive line, Cody earned himself the nickname of “Mount Cody.”[3] By mid-season he was already considered the No. 1 nose tackle prospect for the 2009 NFL Draft by league scouts.[11]

In Alabama's rout over Georgia at Sanford Stadium, Cody was instrumental in holding Doak Walker award candidate Knowshon Moreno to just 34 yards rushing.[12] In the seventh game of the season against Ole Miss, he received a knee injury during the third quarter[13] which sidelined him for two weeks.[14] In the annual Iron Bowl versus rival Auburn, Cody and teammate Bobby Greenwood sacked quarterback Kodi Burns, giving Cody his first half-sack of the season. He also recovered a fumble, which set up an Alabama touchdown.[15] In the 2008 SEC Championship Game versus Florida, Cody recorded three tackles in a 31–20 loss. In the loss, the Crimson Tide allowed 142 yards rushing[16]—the second most in the 2008 season. In the season finale, he recorded one assisted tackle, while holding the Utah Utes to 13 yards rushing.[17] However, Alabama went on to lose the game 31–17, finishing the season 12–2.[18]

Alabama′s rush defense considerably improved in 2008. After giving up 128.4 rushing yards a game in 2007, the Crimson Tide only allowed 78.8 yards per game in 2008. “As far as one guy who has changed our team more than any, you’d have to go with Terrence,” offensive lineman Mike Johnson said.[2] Cody was subsequently given the team’s Defensive Achievement Award for a newcomer who has played a critical role in the effectiveness of his unit.

Despite being commonly regarded as a top prospect, Cody decided to skip the 2009 NFL Draft. On Christmas Day 2008 an "announcement" on his Facebook page said that he was leaving early, but turned out to be a joke by his girlfriend.

Prior to the 2009 season, Cody has dropped about 10 pounds, worked on his conditioning, and hopes to keep himself in the game on third-down passing situations. He was often replaced by Josh Chapman on passing downs in 2008.[21] Cody checked in at fall practice at 354 pounds, however Nick Saban says he needs to be down near 340 in order to become an every-down player and pass-rusher.[22] By the time Alabama plays Virginia Tech on September 5, Cody planned to be down to 345,[23][24] and eventually dropped his weight to 349.[25] Only a couple of days before the season opener, Cody and a few of his teammates were sidelined with flulike symptoms. Cody returned after a three-day absence.[26]

Cody has been named to the 2009 Lombardi Award, Lott Trophy, and Outland Trophy watch lists.[27][28][29] Rivals.com ranked him as the No. 1 defensive tackle in college football in 2009.[30] On October 14, 2009, Cody and fellow teammate Rolando McClain were announced as two of the twelve finalists for the 2009 Lombardi Award.[31] Cody was also named to The Sporting News midseason college football All-American team.[32]

I haven't seen anybody who's a match for this guy one-on-one. Nobody playing on Saturdays, or Sundays probably.

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt.[3]

"I don’t like going against Terrence Cody. That’s just a pain. Too much work. He’s too much of a load."

—Alabama's All-American guard Mike Johnson.[20]

"They've kept blockers off me, and I've been able to run free and make tackles. It wasn't really like that last year. I mean, we had guys who did their jobs, but not too many people have a Terrence Cody in there, a 365-pound guy who can take on the whole offensive line." —Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain explaining his successful 2008 season.[ So is this who we should use our first round pick on this year or go somewhere else with it....leave your thoughts

Daily Norseman Sooo about that one guy

Ok people lets all be realistic here...I really doubt that brett favre will be back for another season after this one. This means that we'll have to invest an a future qb soon. Well after reading a few of your comments week in and week out i've realized how much of you want an elite college quarter back like sam bradford to take over. At the time it seemed pretty hard to believe somebody like sam bradford would fall into our lap in the draft with hopefully our late pick...Well that was before the college season started and now its a new reason to believe.

This season sam bradford came in as one of the best qb's in college and was a sure top draft pick. That was until the 1st play of the season when sam bradford got hurt and injured his shoulder. After he missed the first couple games of the season his stock had to fall atleast 5 to 10 picks in the draft. He made his next start 4 weeks later and played a full game. It seemed as though his stock was going to rise again. Then he played Texas. Just like his first game of the season he got hurt again on the first play. Which could mean that his stock has fell even more especially after he has decided to have season ending surgery http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4583332. Now the dream of picking up an elite qb is becoming even realer.

I believe if Bradfords stock has really fallen to maybe the 10th to 20th pick then a few trades here and there maybe our 1st 2nd and Sage Rosenfels and another player that could fill a whole for the team that we're trading with could do it. basically i'm saying do whatever we can to trade into the middle round for bradford if he'll be there.

I'm not sure about it but i'll be the first to admit my lack of experience with the business(17 years old)  and i dont know how everything will work it so maybe some of yall could tell me what you think about it....enlighten me

Daily Norseman adrian peterson is a thief!!!

Adrian Peterson Stole My Car

Written By Sidney Rice
September 17, 2009

Today we had meetings and the receivers and quarterbacks stayed for extra film, so everybody else got out before us. After I walked to the locker room and my phone rang.

It was Adrian calling.

I answered and he was like, “Hey, I left my other phone by the cold tub, could you grab it for me?” I said yeah. Then he asked if I could bring it over to his house and I said yeah, and he was like, “I know you will.”

We always talk junk to each other so I thought he was just playing. I think he said that because he thought I had already been outside to look for my car, but I hadn’t yet.

When I went into my locker I couldn’t find my key in the usual spot. I thought maybe I left it in the car this morning so I went out to the lot to find it. I parked right around the corner from the door, but when I walked out there, it was gone.

I wasn’t really worried because I knew it had to be someone from the team, because no one else can get into our parking lot. So I had someone drive me up to the staff lot to see if someone had moved it and left it there to play a joke. But it wasn’t up there, and I’m getting really mad at this point.

It’s cool to move my car, but to take my car and leave … my brand new Maserati? Not cool.

Then I remembered that when AP called he said I would be coming over to his house…

I called him and asked if he took my car. He was like, no, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I knew right then that he had it.

Part of the joke was that he hid his car key in my locker so I’d be able to drive over to his house and get my car back. I just got that car a couple of months ago, I guess he wanted to drive it.

It was pretty funny, but I’m definitely going to get him back. Adrian better be on his toes in the locker room.

that was a pretty good prank on a non rookie. he probably would have done it to percy if he percy had his own car....

Daily Norseman vikes say they're not interested in new stadium

http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/63152392.html

With an undefeated team, a mega-star quarterback and a big game coming up Monday, the Minnesota Vikings were back at the State Capitol this morning hoping to spark interest in the one thing they do not have -- a new stadium.

Lester Bagley, a team spokesman, said the Vikings were not interested in renewing a lease to play in the Metrodome, which expires after the 2011 season, and that owner Zygi Wilf was battling pressure from other National Football League owners.

"They don't ask how's [star running back] Adrian Peterson doing, they ask him how is the stadium doing, because the NFL is subsidizing this market to the tune of $15 million to $20 million a year," Bagley said.

While Vikings and Metrodome officials acknowledged there had been no breakthrough on how a new stadium would be financed, Thursday's legislative hearing was an attempt to use a fistful of statistics to capitalize on the team's current popularity and show how Minnesota would benefit economically from a massive remodeling of the Metrodome.

Stadium officials said that the economic benefit study they showcased had been previously released to legislators last February, and there was scant evidence Thursday that public subsidies for a remodeled stadium were gaining new traction at the Legislature.

The Vikings instead spent much of a hearing before a legislative panel talking football and not financing -- reviewing quarterback Brett Favre's game-winning  touchdown pass last Sunday, the team's always-high TV ratings and the interest in Monday night's game against Favre's old team, the Green Bay Packers.  Legislators were also briefed on how Vikings players had helped with a campaign to distribute flu shots.

damn.......I'm too young to know what this means...can someone explain

Daily Norseman THE BOYS CAN PLAY!!!

Minnesota Vikings Kevin and Pat Williams can play the entire season unless a federal court claims jurisdiction over their lawsuit challenging the NFL's drug-testing procedures, Hennepin County District Court Judge Gary Larson ruled today.

Larson stayed action in his courtroom until the U.S. District Court determines whether it has jurisdiction on some of the players' claims. Federal Judge Paul Magnuson said the court does not, but a three-judge panel is hearing an appeal of his ruling in St. Paul on Aug. 18.

If the federal court determines the case should be conducted in state court, Larson wrote "it is not likely that the (Hennepin County) court would, or could force (the players into trial during the middle of a playing season, based on the court's schedule."

The Pro Bowl defensive tackles sued last year after they were found to have taken a banned substance -- unwittingly, they say -- and suspended for four games.

The NFL wanted Larson to delay state court proceedings on the matter until the 8th U.S. District Court of Appeals rules. Larson agreed to do so. "To proceed in both the Eighth Circuit and this court on such similar issues at the exact same time and then to reach conflicting results would be a colossal waste of limited resources," the judge wrote.

The players asked to proceed immediately in state court with a trial before the season begins. Absent a trial next month, the players asked that Larson let them take the field and conduct a trial after the season - which he agreed to do.

The Williamses filed a lawsuit in state court contending that the NFL's drug-testing procedures violate state workplace laws, and they asked that a judge void their suspensions.

The players argue that Minnesota law gives employees an opportunity to explain use of a product innocently used but otherwise banned, but the NFL didn't allow the Williamses to explain their use of the over-the-counter supplement StarCaps. The supplement was found to contain the banned diuretic bumetanide, which can mask steroid use but was not listed as an ingredient on the label.

Meanwhile, the NFL Players Association filed suit in federal court on the players' behalf. As part of that suit, NFL attorneys argued that federal court had jurisdiction over the labor laws that govern its drug-testing program and that the state claims should be dismissed.

Magnuson dismissed the union's claims that the suspensions violated the players' collective bargaining agreement. But he sent the Williamses' claims under state law back to state court, saying they were not pre-empted by the union agreement as the NFL had argued.

Both sides have appealed parts of Magnuson's rulings.

The Dream Shake Johnny Flynn

A nice thought came to my head about one of my favorite college point guards, Johnny Flynn. It seems as though Rubio is going to be playing this year for the Wolves which makes the wolves likely to trade Flynn. And i'm not sure about all the cap matching up stuff that yall talk about so i'll let yall correct me on that but why don't we trade Battier and Lowry for Flynn. He's a great leader on the court with great vision who knows how to get his teammates involved. He's a good shooter and knows how to attack the basket and seems to come up strong in clutch situations (6 overtime game against number 2 UCONN, played 70 minutes). He could be apart of the rebuilding process as well. Aaron brooks becomes a 6th man like everyone wants.

Then in the 2010 free agency splash why don't we go for Joe Johnson. Mcgrady will be out of our hands and we would have somebody else to take over the game for us.

Again I"m asking for somebody to help me on the salary cap situation and tell me what will work and won't work. But if it does work here could be our future line up.

Johnny Flynn/Aaron Brooks

Joe Johnson/Jermain Taylor

Ariza/Budinger/White

Scola/Landry/Hayes

Ming/Anderson/Dorsey

Daily Norseman I'm mad at this

I wrote a nice little article on who should be the 3rd string running back this year and what not and I have very little to no interest in re writing it. I do want to tell you that Ian Johnson, undrafted, seems to be a little more athletic than Albert Young, and produced better stats of the two in college. After watching video's of the two i'd rather see Johnson on the field more than Young even though it seems to me that Young has really been trying to show off this offseason and maybe ahead of Johnson for the spot. But since i'm not rewriting my article i'll just ask straight up what you guys think?

The Dream Shake Dear Mr.  Mcgrady

If you even read this i want you to know that I still believe in you. I'm not one of those bandwagon jumpers who are wanting to trade you because you've been injured the past few years. You cant help that you're injured. I don't understand how people can say you're washed up after just a year ago you averaged 27 points grabbing 8 rebounds a game and averaging almost 7 assists while shooting 42 percent from the field. Not only did you compile those stats but you got them while suffering from an injury in your shoulder and your knee.

Nobody remembers how much you carried us through the playoffs last year even though we lost the series. I still remember the game were you scored 13 points in 35 seconds ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfurCV1FDpM)...i was one of the people who stayed at the game to watch the miracle happen. You spent your first few years in Toronto under the shadows under your cousin Vince but everyone knew you had the ability to be a star in the game. Then you were traded to the Magic where you and Grant Hill were supposed to be a duel threat. However Hill was sidelined with injury and you had to carry the team on your back. I mean how can people expect you to get out of the first round carrying a team by yourself and being an 8th seed. The Magic years were your most dominant when you were awarded nba scoring leader for 2 years and getting put in the all star game for the first time.

Then you were traded to the Rockets. The same year you scored 13 points in 35 seconds Although you had the yao in the playoffs with you you still lost to a better mavericks team. The next season you started to suffer from severe back spasms which cost you some of your explosiveness. Yao went down before the playoffs started and so did the houston rockets. The next year you lose yao again and lose to the jazz for a 2nd year in a row. Its no one's fault that we haven't been able to get out of the first round. You weren't given the fire power to compete with the teams in the playoffs

However this is your year for return. All the pieces are in place. With Aaron Brooks and Lowry at the point guard position, Wafer(maybe James White) backing you up at the SG position, Battier backing Artest(if he returns up at SF, Landry backing  up Scola at PF and the 2nd best center in the league the Rockets are poised to be the only threat in the West that can stop the NBA champions. I believe you can come in and still play with a high intensity. You dont have to put up 20 points a game because that's not what we need. We need ball movement hustle and somebody who can score by creating their own shots( which is you). During the 2nd round of the playoffs where we lost to LA by blowout victories we needed you to create your own shot and put up points when we couldn't score. I dont believe all the bull about the Rockets being better without you and Yao thats just retard opinion. But anyways take your time during your rehab process don't rush back like you did last year we can manage a few games without you but we will definately need you down the stretch and in the playoffs. This goes for Yao too. Good luck Mr. Mcgrady

Sincerely,

A Forever Mcgrady Fan

P.S. If you really want to get the Rockets fans back on your side on the first game against the lakers you will have to completely make Kobe look like Shawn Bradley after you dunked on him ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKOCy9R-h2A)...Embarass him, Anger him, intimidate him, light kobe's ass up!!(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRWhfH4qkcA)

Daily Norseman EJ Henderson

Henderson is probably my favorite linebacker in the NFL right now not all because of him playing for the Vikings, but because of his physical aggressiveness and his passion to completely annihalate his opposition. However, after sitting out for most of last year from an injury to his foot do you think he'll come back firing like he was the 2 years before. As we have seen after injuries alot of nfl defensive players aren't the same. I just wanna know because i  get my style of play from him as i play the same position on the field. So tell me if you think his health is going to carry over from last year and be a concern???
