The 2010 San Francisco Giants: they’re not your average ballclub. They’re more akin to a merry band of misfits, as they have been called by the press, who have nothing in common but one goal. And that goal was to win.

You have a potentially insane closer who will dye his beard black and an ace that is known for his long hair and his smoking habits as well as his sick changeup and his unusual windup. Water buffaloes patrolled the corner outfield – one whose former team did not want him, placing him on the waiver wire, and the other who was coming off a horrible year and uses a red, rhinestoned thong as a “rally” item. A minor league journey man with nothing to lose used his speed and amazing defensive skills, becoming an unlikely star. A rookie catcher sweeter than the sweetest tea in Georgia who can handle a premier pitching staff, while maintaining the same humble attitude he’s had and thinking about the team first, before his individual performance. A twenty-five year old pitcher who everyone suggests being traded for a big name hitter, but hasn’t because he’s a veteran who’s proved his worth and is one of the team’s aces. A panda going through a sophomore slump, but came to the park every day with pure, unadulterated joy. A waiver wire pickup only on the team to prevent a division rival from acquiring him.

To put it simply: they weren’t built to look like a championship caliber team. When the season started, you imagined them to be another team just trying to stay above .500. Buster Posey started the season off in Fresno, as did Madison Bumgarner. Todd Wellemeyer was the fifth starter. Every day, there was a different lineup. What else could you expect from that? Aside from fearing that Bengie Molina would be penciled into the cleanup spot, of course.

Duane Kuiper called this brand of baseball “TORTURE,” after a loss in April. And that’s what it was: pure torture. It wasn’t a team that could score more than three runs on a regular basis. Take your one run of support and make it stand. The pitching staff did its best to not lose 1-0 games, but there were times when it came to that. And when the offense could scrounge for five runs, sometimes the wheels would come off for the pitcher.

The first half of the season was full of ups and downs. It was too early to worry about the standings, but you wondered how this team would fare in the long run. Then came June. Posey and Bumgarner were called up to the bigs, Wellemeyer placed on the disabled list, more lineup shuffling. By the end of the month, the Giants were struggling. They began a torture filled seven game losing streak with getting swept by the Dodgers. Losing to your arch rivals? Can’t get any more torturous than that. There was a small, sliver of hope that came from that series, however. Bengie Molina had been traded to the Texas Rangers. AT&T Park rejoiced, for the slowest man on the field was no longer theirs.

The losing streak continued, but they turned things around in Colorado. They beat the unbeatable Ubaldo Jimenez. And Travis Ishikawa with a grand slam, no less. A loss came the next day, but it didn’t slow them down. They went to Milwaukee, and swept the Brewers in the next series. But the division was strong and they struggled to move up in the standings.

Being in a playoff race still wasn’t what the fans in San Francisco expected out of this team. Too much torture, too many one-run ballgames. You still couldn’t see this team making it. You’d watch, sure, out of loyalty. But believe? Nah. What reason would you have to believe? You would think they’ll just torture you in the end.

August and September came around. The Rockies were making a push for the division, while the first place Padres were struggling to keep their lead. The Dodgers were hopeless, much to the happiness of San Francisco. The Giants, meanwhile, continued to play the same brand of baseball they’ve played all year with some new faces. A couple of trades and waiver wire pickups helped strengthen the bullpen, added some bats to the lineup. And shockingly enough, they kept winning. They made a push for the division themselves. The Rockies lost steam and the Dodgers were eliminated. That left it to one final weekend: Padres versus the Giants in San Francisco. One more win got them into the playoffs. That’s all they needed: one more win.

That didn’t happen without a few heart attacks, of course. Friday night, they lost the game. Saturday afternoon, it seemed like they had no hope. There came a possibility of a three team playoff just to see who would be playing in the playoffs. It came down to 162. Final game of the season on a sunny day at the ballpark. You had hope there. People – San Francisco – believed in them, as they had done the last few weeks of the season. The Giants were up against the Padres’ ace, Mat Latos, who is slowly becoming one of the fans’ disliked rivals. Jonathan Sanchez was on the mound for the orange and black, facing the team he no-hit the previous season. There was nothing else you could do but hope for the best and hope the Giants win. There was nothing else but to believe. And they did it. They won 3-0 to a boisterous crowd screaming in excitement. They were playoff bound.

Orange October. Playoff Torture. Whatever you wanted to call it, the Giants were going to face the Braves in the NLDS. And they were ready for it. It wasn’t without the defibrillator required scares, of course. But they prevailed in 4 games, advancing to the NLCS where they waited to face the reigning National League Champions, the Phillies.

That was not a series that was going to be easy. Especially not when the national media would make the Giants out to be the lesser team, the team that would roll over easily for the more “superior” team. The Giants weren’t going to take that. They battled through before – through the mockery, through the doubt, through the bias. And they did it again. In a best of seven series, they won the National League pennant in six games, torture until the very last pitch. By now, San Francisco was used to this torture, though on a larger scale. The payoff was different. This win was sweeter than the previous ones. They were going to the World Series.

It’s been an interesting season, to say the least. But no matter what happens now, you just can’t help but think, “Wow. That crazy team battled so far and proved everyone wrong.” With a side of torture, of course.

AAA All-Star Game is on, and so are the ESPYS. Brock Bond's playing for the PCL team and I believe Steve Edlefsen is there, too. I don't know anything about what's going on in the ESPYS, though. But this is the place to talk about it.

Feel free to talk about dinner, the latest book you're reading, or an awesome band you want to tell people about. Or you can just go crazy and post whatever topic you want.

I went to the Grizzlies game last Thursday for the sole reason of seeing Carlton Banks in person. (Lame reason, but, whatever. I love The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.) Alright, that's not entirely the truth, seeing as I also got to see Posey play and Joey pitch.

Anyway, here's some pictures from the game. Everything else can be seen on my photoblog. And, no, I'm not just posting this to pimp out my blog.

EDIT: Added photos of Alfonso Ribeiro.

And second, I think I will want to at least attempt a life outside of sports once my career is over (I'm actually taking the LSAT this Saturday, so you can tell I'm thinking more and more about life outside of baseball). There's a good possibility though that I will find myself coming back to sports, and baseball specifically, as it will be hard to get both feet out of this addicting water. Once it wraps itself around you, it's tough to walk away from.

Then I can help you…

Anti-Tree division
Nick: F**k trees. New York City had the right idea. Chop them all down to show them who’s boss, then let them have one, big park in the middle of the city. But they know that if they get cocky or whatever, it’s chopchopchop!

children's story division
asfaninpismobeach: Jack be nimble, Jack be quick.........
Who the hell am I kidding, lol

Nick: Nice play by Giambi!
Nico: It helps when your natural motion is to keel over and drop dead

OldhamA: We made a similar deal and now we're paying for it.
Nick: We did no such thing. When Lew visited Bud he ate 3 peanuts, and now the A’s have to spend the first half of the season in Hell every year.

video game edition
GoA's: If Crosby plays every position this year does he unlock some secret level of MLB?
ElQuesoCapitan: He has to hit Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right Z Enter
Jjjsixsix: i thought it was up up down down left right left right a b?
GoA's: Thats what Crosby looks like he's doing when he's fielding

Jennifer: If Travis fails his drug test... it’s my fault. I’m sorry. One thing led to another, and by the end of the night we were snorting coke off a dead hooker, eating shrooms, and being careless with glitter.

Erasr: Will we score in every inning?!
Nico: Probably not the 9th!
Kallus: I don't think Eveland could get to the coliseum that fast...

mikev: Golfers have their own coaches because there are no teams.

Athletic: Beane and the A's must be doing this on purpose so they can leave town
miggyk2: Gallagher thought I will sacafice being comfortable for the rest of my life and end my career so you guys can leave town. Brilliant.

Flashfire: I'm not surprised when Bob Geren is telling them their effort in the Detroit series was outstanding. The bar’s being set low enough the mini sirloin burger cowboys could clear it with ease.

Nico: Shouldn't be putting in Gio? How are we going to get it to the 12th?
danmerqury: Nah, Gio only gets 120-pitch appearances in relief.

Rated-R Superstar: Hannahan is still in the lineup, though.
Trainman: Hope to top 2/3rd's of lineup comes thru
Nico: How do you feel about Hannahan? I can't remember.

Leopold Bloom: and I just heard from Lynn, who's AT THE STADIUM WITH 67M! His streak is over!
mikev: He got laid?

ElQuesoCapitan: I would assume other zombies are safe from zombies. And perhaps brainless creatures?
Leopold Bloom: Bob Geren's safe from zombies?

It’s on the Bleachers to get this chant going.
Nico: 1st amendment, baby! But to be on the safe side, maybe a more respectful sign would be in order: "Mr. Beane, if it’s not too terribly awkward, perhaps you could find a moment in your schedule to dismiss the manager? I mean he’s a bit of a tart, isn’t he?"
OldhamA: Tart or Tard?

Flashfire: I'm just laughing at Duchscherer having a setback on his recovery. Never would’ve seen THAT one coming.
DMOAS: I think he saw the way this team has been playing and Geren's managing and went "ow, oh, my, um… ah… uh, um… my back!".

emperor nobody: just tuning in after one of those wild Saturday nites. I’m sorry, I was looking for the 2009 Oakland Athletics and this screen I am looking at says it’s Visitors by a tally of 4 to nil. Might someone direct me to the actual A’s result? This one seems unlikely if not impossible.

Thanks in advance =)
iglew: There were some technical problems with the score, but the A’s pen is hard at work correcting the problem now.

javaball: "A's avoided a series sweep today" That will be the game recap of the season.
Future Ed: that should be the headline if they win the opening game

gigglingone: btw, it's not a blister that knocked Braden out of the game. Just a cut.

Braden said he accidentally sustained the cut on the team medical case in the dugout between innings.

Nico: What a great medical staff! Even their equipment does more harm than good.

Since no one else wants to post it, I will. I know QOTM posts are usually at the start of the month, but there's a lot that needs to be posted, so I figured, why not? I went back a few months for some of these, so I probably missed a lot.

Since no one else wants to post it, I will. I know QOTM posts are usually at the start of the month, but there's a lot that needs to be posted, so I figured, why not? I went back a few months for some of these, so I probably missed a lot.

Helloooo 1st: This is funny. I just woke up from a dream of the A’s playing on Opening Day this coming season. Holliday took a first pitch strike, someone yelled something at him and he proceeded to turn around and hit lefty… against a lefty pitcher. Of course he hit a 2-run bomb right there so looks like the trades already paying off.
oakinboston: your dreams involve switch hitting too?

DyeLongJustice: two daric bartons are better than one!
petitceebee: Then we also have to hire 2 full time lifeguards when these guys both hit the whirlpool

jpl: Do I smell Johnson for Crosby? Bobby can go back to where he picked up that ridiculous nickname "Bones"
monkeyball: Do you do *what* for Crosby?

oblique: Rickey should have as much time as Rickey wants to expound upon the virtues of Rickey. (courtesy Rickeypedia)

Tag-team division
mikev: Johnson also got 91 games in 2006. And regressed significantly.
DyeLongJustice: ya but he was blinded by sunscreen!
WaddellCanseco: Except in AAA where he saw the ball just fine
Nico: Different sun

grover: Nico should be whipped for missing that one. Problem is, he’d enjoy it.
Nico: Perfect timing - I can’t find my pants anyway.
DMOAS: But you know where the A's are.

brenarlo:No.
DMOAS: This.
gigglingone: Is
miggyk2: SPARTACUST!!!1!!!!!11

monkeyball: the A's also just saved $180M on Teixeira!
Nico: Now if they'll only switch to GEICO, they can sign both Lowe AND Sheets!!!!111
monkeyball: So easy, a Sabean could do it

iglew: I'd welcome back ex-girlfriends except that I’ve only got room for one on my roster, and I don’t want to DFA my wife.
monkeyball: you should really look into platooning

Knocking the softball out of the park division
franks a lot: What about the threat of pirates?
OptimistPrime: Only during interleague play would that be a concern, right?
OldhamA: And even then, not really.

Poetry division
grover: There once was a catcher from Motown

Who’s numbers cried out for a showdown

The incumbent did fret

PT’s eyes did get wet

Alas, no new squatter in Oak-town

monkeyball: Dude, Where's My Free-Agent Shortstop?

mikev: Fulcar?
monkeyball: too many clowns

Staplehead edition
WaddellCanseco: He is a good dome hitter.
jeffro: how many domes has hit?
travdog6: not as many as the shallow end of daric barton's swimming pool

AsFanInLA: I am sure this must be a sign of the apocolypse. He has written a book that he is selling on his website. And in time for the holidays!
Englishmajor: Well, he IS a motivational speaker. Every time any of us hear him, we’re motivated to find the mute button.

jaylikewise: once al davis slips up and walks into direct sunlight, the a's will have their run of the city.

Flashfire: Can we add another one? He renounces the Giambino nickname forever?
monkeyball: how about Giamsorry

Coenesque Refrain Division
xbhaskarx: "certain people around here" does not include me, but it does include certain people around here

Asfan4ever723: cust dives for balls
mikev: So does Anderson.. It’s just those are the ones he’s swinging at.

grover: Heaven forbid we roll in silliness during the offseason
Nico: No, that would be silly
oblique: And that's not how we roll.

rfloh: What has the AL east got to do with anything?
WaddellCanseco: Clearly you don't watch enough ESPN

kbtoyz: BTW…I heard from reliable sources who knew him in HS and at UCLA and he is supposed to be a grade A prick
Nico: Does that mean Tampa Bay gets two draft pricks when he leaves?

Nico: I agree that Albert Pujols' bat, by itself, doesn't win 10 games, but what about his bat with Pujols holding it? Aha!

mrod: Hey, I always say if you can’t laugh at your self, who can you laugh at then?
iglew: Simple: You can laugh at Monkeyball.

Stathead division
oakinboston: good thing I watch my A's games on excel sheets!

mrod: Giambi to the press: "Oh yeah, the gold thong is gonna be there for sure!"????
monkeyball: I know it’s not much but it’s the best I can do
My gift is my thong and this one’s for you
EddieVegas_NRAF: And you can tell everybody
This is your thong

I have no idea how to categorize this.

ChadGod: Crosby was good on basepaths last year wasnt he?
Nate: How would we know?

thejd44: Well, for one thing, average and median aren't the same thing
Nico: Neither are median and large.
I learned THAT one the hard way!

-Cindi

xbhaskarx: Feces-throwing monkey on the loose in Tampa Bay
monkeyball: Leopold kicked me off his couch

whiteshoes40: Someone just sang "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" on American Idol. What was with those lyrics, man? Didn’t hear anything about Holliday or trading or Andy Sonnanstine. What the world.
Nico: It was chri5

mrod: well it's official. Andrew Jones is no longer a Dodger.
MrIncognito: Awesome. They finally cleared a starting spot for Juan Pierre.

Retired Edition
Poppy: Many of you know which diary I'd pimp if I hadn't given up on it.

salb918: Don't make me....confiscate your periods.
JediLeroy: Could you confiscate my wife's periods for me?
salb918: Uh...okay, but I'm not paying any child support.

sucking-up-to-frontpagers division
JediLeroy: I hate it when people post stupid lyrics. But I love it when monkeys do. Nice job!

monkeyball: Ask not for whom the ump calls, he calls strike three

67MARQUEZ: my, my
monkeyball: hey, hey
franks a lot: Bobby Crosby is here to stay
67MARQUEZ: why, why
franks a lot: Mediocre play can never die
67MARQUEZ: cry, cry
monkeyball: He gives you glove but we paid for bat
andeux: Miggy's gone but he's not forgotten
(Bobby’s Rotten, Rotten Bobby)
HigherPie: Bobby seems to strike out, even more than Cust
monkeyball: It's better to be called out, than to swing away
green star oakland: The swing is wrong, it's just misbegotten.
monkeyball: There's more to the pitcher than meets the eye
67MARQUEZ: Cy, Cy

NateHST: I wonder who would win in a fight between Eckstein and Jeter
doctorK: Baseball

thejd44: Can they put Crosby on the DL with hurt feelings?

Extended Farm Animal Edition
somebodyelse: There's porn on the internet?
Nico: My living room is the internet?
somebodyelse: Your living room is AWESOME
mikev: Once you plow through all the wool
Athletics fan and runner: On my first read I thought that said, "Once you plow through all the wood."
somebodyelse: then Pennington takes over

Life-FAIL division
mikev: It's the line for life failing. You see, LB was implying that HE is failing at life, and has done so for longer than you have, thus you have to get BEHIND him in the line for life failing, because he was there first.

He failed at getting that point across.

Leopold Bloom: Is Crosby tax-deductible?
walkoff baltimore chop: Unfortunately, no. But he can save you money on car insurance.
ElQuesoCapitan: He can't hit anything, so he's probably a good driver.

Zonis: they can go play at the Coliseum
doctorK: They'd have to tarp off the second deck

Leopold Bloom: So what's the definition of a crooked number? Anything other than 1?
andeux: AIG's balance sheet

irony category
xbhaskarx: "Don’t you think we’d put out a release on that?"

they did

skigurl: Sushi Ra in Scottsdale. Dave Stewart’s favorite, last I knew. :)
Poppy: How do I know Dave Stewart isn't trying to kill me? Have you eaten there? You’ve never tried to kill me even when you’ve had the chance… you can probably be trusted…
andeux: Just don't crowd the plate when you go there.

franks a lot: Bobby Crosby plans on joining AN. That way no one can defame him on this site anymore
Leopold Bloom: ACK! (don’t give him any ideas)
doctorK: No problem. Just put all Crosby-defamation links on the low, outside part of the page.

Nico: I almost dated a Nationals fan once. But I couldn’t find one.

Zonis: Does Cabrera always order his jerseys 2 sizes too big?
ElQuesoCapitan: Cabrera orders his body two sizes too small.

Three-part edition
athleticsgirl24: So should the Pedroia commerical be a drinking game?
NateHST: Terrible idea. We’d all be belligerent and pissed off that Dustin Pedroia keeps coming on the television.
athleticsgirl24: I'm already like that

ATarHeel: I hate to say this (don't kill me AN) I miss watching Crosby strikeout, it was like a daily routine
vegAN ryAN: What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

GreenNGoldSooner: Hotdogs are like A's line-up cards. It’s better not to see them being made.

worldblee: A Buck nearly killed a Unicorn
Joey C.: Oh, deer

ChadGod: In other news, I think the A's are now the only team not to have a homer. The Padres commentators claimed they had been the last team to get one when Adrian Gonzalez went deep today.
alox: Ray Fosse doesn’t count? WTF?

OldhamA: Why's he underarming it. This isn't softball.
Ovale Fan: I think he's pitching to Croz

iglew: Seattle TV announcer on Cabrera:
"… replaced long-time fan favorite Bobby Crosby"

Um, maybe "long-time ago fan favorite"….

game-related something division
Nate: How did we end up in the bottom of the 12th needing a hit from Bobby Crosby?

bad commerical division
franks a lot: Lowell was sipping on some MGD. Too drunk to make that routine play.

conspiracy theory division
ohtobe21likehuston: Somebody just showed Crosby on TV doing good things. Was this staged?
xbhaskarx: filmed in the same studio as the moon landing

baseballgirl: Does anyone else think... …it doesn’t matter how many scoreless innings the ‘pen pitches today? We haven’t had a HINT of scoring in forever!
Trainman: Pretty much. They have more chance of winning the lottery than scoring.
Nico: That's what the clerk says to me every time I try to spend my dollar on a condom

Jennifer: Huh. Wang’s ERA is the same as the balance in my checkbook.

Image division
