Windy City Gridiron Time for some Speculation (53 Man Roster Edition)

With recent musings in this fanpost section about the receiver situation, I figured we can attempt to put on our "Lovie faces" and figure out which 53 guys we want to take up into Wisconsin come Week 1. There are some obvious choices, some fairly solid predictions, and then there's the bubble.

Like the wise musings of House of Pain, jump around!

Windy City Gridiron My First Round Mock

1. Detroit Lions- Matthew Stafford, Georgia

The Lions are going through a transition and need a new face of the franchise. They have so many needs and a QB is one of them. I'd personally go OT but there isn't a concensus #1 tackle.

2. St. Louis Rams- Eugene Monroe, Virginia

Orlando Pace is nearing the end of his career especially with the rash of recent injuries. Maybe a dominant tackle will help Marc Bulger regain his old form.

3. Kansas City Chiefs- Brian Orakpo, Texas

A bit of a stretch here, but I think that they will give Tyler Thigpen one more season to prove the end of last year wasn't just a fluke. KC has possibly the worst D-Lines in football since they traded Jared Allen, and we've all seen how good he is.

4. Seattle Seahawks- Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech

One of the easiest picks to make. Seattle's glaring weakness is at wide reciever and Crabtree is one of the best to come around in years.

5. Cleveland Browns- Aaron Curry, Wake Forest

Cleveland needs front seven help and Curry is the top linebacking prospect. They could also select Andre Smith for one of the best bookend tackle tandems in football.

6. Cincinatti Bengals- Andre Smith, Alabama

Probably the third best lineman here, but he played on a winner and GM's pick them higher than they normally should. The Bengals need help everywhere, but a big OT is a good start.

7. Oakland Raiders- B.J. Raji, Boston College

Al Davis is mentally unstable, Raji was kicked off the BC team because of grade trouble. Raji has been tearing it up in post season camps and Al seems to look solely at those. Seriously, the Raiders are dysfunctional.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars- Michael Oher, Ole Miss

My favorite player in the draft. Huge LT with unlimited potential. Scouts knock his pass-blocking footwork, but I don't see it. Please go read The Blind Side by Michael Lewis, amazing book.

9. Green Bay Packers- Vontae Davis, Illinois

Green Bay normally drafts by a "Best Player Available" strategem. Their biggest need however is in the secondary, so I believe either Vontae Davis or Malcolm Jenkins will be picked here. Davis seems to be the better player right now, but the two are very similar.

10. San Francisco 49ers- Everette brown, Florida State

The best rush LB in the draft will help their 3-4 defense finally get pressure on opposing QB's

11. Buffalo Bills-  Jason Smith, Baylor

The last of the elite tackles in the draft. Buffalo had trouble protecting the quaterback as well as running the ball. Good ol' Dickie Jauron needs line help here.

12. Denver Broncos- Rey Maualuga, Southern California

The Broncos D was atrocious last year. Rey will certainly provide a big leader in the middle of their defense.

13. Washington Redskins- Peria Jerry, Ole Miss

The Skins need major renovations on both sides of their line. They could go with Duke Robinson from Oklahoma or Eben Britton from Arizona, but its a little early for either O-lineman. So then they take the best defensive lineman available.

14. New Orleans Saints- Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio State

New Orleans has adressed the D backfield for the past three years. And they're still God awful. Jenkins is a proven commodity.

15. Houston Texans- Mark Sanchez, Southern California

Houston needs help on the defensive side of the ball. With that said, mark Sanchez is too good to slide further than this. Houston has two quaterbacks who have shown to not be NFL starters. They'll probably start Sanchez his rookie year, because USC is a pro-style offense.

16. San Diego Chargers- Knowshon Moreno, Georgia

Doesn't San Diego already have LDT and Darren Sproles? Yes, but they're both free agents. LaDanian is more likely to stay because their won't be a market for him. So then they bring in their back of the future with Knowshon. He should go higher than this, but there already tons of good RB's in the league

17. New York Jets- Chris "Beanie" Wells, Ohio State

Thomas Jones is likely over the hill and it will show in the first few weeks of the season. #4 might try to boycott the pick but I hope he falls and can't get up... should ahve gotten LifeAlert.

18. CHICAGO BEARS- Aaron Maybin, Penn State

Before I get into the why I'll look into other possibilities:

Larry English, Northern Illinois: Great career, commanding double teams and still getting nice numbers. But he's more of a 3-4 rusher.

Josh Freeman, Kansas State: I'm all in favor of developing a young QB for a year while Orton becomes more and more like Jim Miller.

Percy Harvin, Florida: Small and injury-prone. No thank you.

Jeremy Maclin, Mizzouri: One of my favorites for the Bears. He's a speed demon who is learning to run routes and is a great returner. But don't the Bears already have Devin Hester. Two aren't needed.

Brian Cushing, Southern California: Amazign athlete who could give the Bears the best linebacking corps in the NFL. Just not the biggest need right now.

Aaron Maybin is from Penn State, I know that worries some people. But he is just 20 years old and has great potential to go along with some pretty good numbers. Maybin is one of the best pass rushers in college. The Bears DEs are getting older and slower. I hate that we would go Defense here but Maybin is a good fit and a great player.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Josh Freeman, Kansas State

After last years glut of QBs and Chucky have hit the unemployment line the Bucs need a new signal caller. They will go with this years Joe Flacco.

20. Detroit Lions- Larry English, Northern Illinois

Didn't I just say he's a better fit in a 3-4? I did. This is madness! No, this is Detroit!! (Then they kick common sense into a pit)

21. Philadelphia Eagles- LeSean McCoy, Pittsburgh

Brian Westbrook is constantly injured from overusage. McCoy is a really good runner who is also versatile. Andy Reid could also go for some line help.

22. Minnesota Vikings- Alex Mack, California

Mack is the best center in the draft, as a prospect, since Bruce Matthews in 1983. With Matt Birk as a free agent likely to go to the highest bidder, the Vikings will look to replace him.

23. New England Patriots- Brian Cushing, Southern California

New England's D is full of senior citizens. Cushing is an OLB who can hit with the best of them. Could also go for a safety with Willie Moore from Mizzou, but his stock is falling as quick as real stocks.

24. Atlanta Falcons- Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State

The Falcons offense becomes much more potent with the top TE in the draft. Atlanta already has two good WRs. Pettigrew is a great reciever and an underrated blocker.

25. Miami Dolphins- Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina

Yes, Maclin is rated higher. But Nicks is a great complement to Ted Ginn whereas Harvin and Maclin have similar skill sets.

26. Baltimore Ravens- Jeremy Maclin, Missouri

Look for Maclin to have one of the top 40-yard dash times at the Combine. If he can develop route running skills I could see him having a career similar to Carolina's Steve Smith. He is an amazing playmaker.

27. Indianapolis Colts- Duke Robinson, Oklahoma

Peyton Manning recieves a hulk of a guard here. Indy has been vulnerable to inside power rushes a la Tommie Harris in Week 1.

28. Philadelphia Eagles- Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland

Philadelphia is pretty deep. Except at wideout. Desean Jackson is their only WR with NFL skill. Heyward-Bey has all of the skills neccesary to become a great player.

29. New York Giants- Percy Harvin, Florida

After the Plax incident, the Giants called it a year. Harvin doesn't play like Burress, but he could become a favorite target of Eli Manning

30. Tennessee Titans- Juaquin Iglesias, Oklahoma

The biggest weakness the Titans had, besides Vince Young's emotions, was at wide reciever. Iglesias seemed to come up big in the big moments in the big games.

31. Arizona Cardinals- James Laurinitis, Ohio State

Playing alongside the athletic Karlos Dansby will help Laurinitis develop quickly to the NFL game after playing for so long in the slow Big 10. Laurinitis is a consistent tackler and a team leader.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers- Tyson Jackson, Louisiana State

Improving a great defense seems to be the modus operandi of the Steelers. Aaron Smith was a nonfactor most of the season and Jackson adds the speed that the D seems to be based off of.

This is just the first mock I will put up here. Picks are sure to move with the NFL Combine coming up. I personally believe it to be overrated, and that game tape is more valuable. But hey maybe thats why I'm not a GM. Please discuss, as I would love to hear what the rest of you think.
