Tyler Waldron, Vincent Payne Signed

The Pirates have signed 5th-round pick Tyler Waldron and 12th-round pick Vincent Payne, both RHPs. Waldron is a college arm, while Payne is a juco product. You can read more about them on WTM's excellent list of bios for the Bucs' 2010 draft selections.

When exactly did Russell start losing us games?

First off, this isn't really intended as a "Fire Russell" post, even though I am a proponent of this happening at some point.  It seems to me, however, that John Russell was not a bad manager by...

6/14 Minor League Open Thread

Indy is on the road against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tonight - Mike Crotta gets the call against former Pirate farmhand Romulo Sanchez. Bradenton sends Aaron Pribanic to the hill tonight in St. Lucie,...

Cutch's first 162 games

The line: .297/.373/.479/.852 in 639 ABs, with 19 HRs, 10 triples, and 35 SBs in 44 attempts, as well as 108 runs scored and 71 runs batted in. Since I need to get to 75 words, and thought I should...

Pens Acquire G Mattias Modig

After trading a 2010 sixth-round pick to the Ducks for Modig, they sign him to a two-year entry-level contract. Apparently they saw something worthwhile in him that made them really want to get him, as there is plenty of depth in the system with Fleury and Johnson up top and Curry and Thiessen in AAA. Anyone know anything about this kid?

FSL All-Star Rosters Announced

Bradenton will send LHP Jeff Locke, RHPs Nathan Adcock and Noah Krol, C Tony Sanchez, IFs Jeremy Farrell and Brock Holt, and OF Quincy Latimore to the 2010 FSL ASG. RHP Bryan Morris was also selected, but made ineligible by his promotion to Altoona.

Pirates Sign Six Latin Americans

Per DK, a few hours ago. Willy Garcia certainly sounds like the most interesting one, though I'm intrigued by all of them.

RB Mendenhall Released

...Happy April Fool's Day In May.

Virgil Vasquez Traded

No, this is not an April Fool's joke. Virgil has been sent to the Rays for a PTBNL. I can't believe the Pirates got anything at all for him. UPDATE by Charlie: This is the first trade in recent memory about which I have practically nothing to say. The PTBNL won't be anyone of consequence, and the Pirates really don't need the sort of "depth" Vasquez provides.

Phillies Sign Fogg, Taubenheim

Via's Todd Zolecki. This makes five former Pirate misfits the Phils have grabbed this postseason, the others being Chris Duffy, Ryan Vogelsong, and Tagg Bozied. Of course, it's probably reasonable to assume that none of them will reach the major leagues this year; at least, not with the Phillies.

Brady Quinn Traded To Denver

Via Yahoo. Report is Quinn for Peyton Hillis and a 2011 draft pick. I'm hearing (outside of this article) that the pick is a 6th rounder, and that there is a conditional 2012 pick as well. I'm not terribly keen on the Browns having Hillis, but if Jake Delhomme starts at QB for them, it shouldn't matter much.

A rumor I'm hearing...

I'm hearing tales of Alex Goligoski for Ryan Callahan?  Can someone allay my fears here?  Make no mistake, I'd LOVE to have Callahan - he's one of my favorite players outside of a Penguin uniform. ...

Someone Might Be Interested In Vazquez?

Scroll a ways down in the article. I'm probably blowing this out of proportion somewhat, but if the subject is trading Vazquez, I'll go for it.

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball League

Hey, I'm looking for managers for my fantasy baseball league, and I figured that there's no better place to find them than the baseball-educated folks here at Bucs Dugout. League is set for a live...

Jonathan Cheechoo Waived

Corresponding move to the Cullen-Picard deal, I believe. Anyone, at all, interested? I'm not ($3MM cap hit until '11 is pretty crazy), but who knows.

Pens 2009 3rd rounder Ben Hanowski scores for St. Cloud State with 0.01 seconds left in a 4-3 game. The game would end in a 4-4 tie.

Jose Julio Ruiz

26-year-old first baseman, defecting out of Cuba.  Can't vouch for reliability, but here's a semi-scouting report on him.  Looks like a platoon batter against RHPs, with good contact ratings but...

Orioles Sign Jeff Salazar

Not terribly important, but worth a FanShot, I guess. The article notes that Salazar is expected to start the year at Baltimore's AAA affiliate in Norfolk.

As we wind to the upcoming faceoff against the Thrashers, I was checking out Puck Daddy's latest post.  It talks about potential market value for Ilya Kovalchuk, citing a Pierre LeBrun article in...

Former Penguin Ryan Stone beats up former Flyer Steve Downie. Of Stone's three career fights, two of them have been against Downie (the other being against Steve Ott).

Pirates Resign Virgil Vasquez To A Minor-League Deal

According to BA's weekly MiL Transactions list. No details listed, just the note that the Pirates signed Vasquez. Any additional contract details would be welcome.

Russell benched; Gradkowski will start for Oakland

Cool to see a Pittsburgh guy get his (second or third) chance, even with a team like Oakland. Although, Tampa and Cleveland are hardly better, I suppose.

Rich Hill Is A Free Agent

Make sense for the Bucs to try and take a minor-league flyer on him?

Join or die

Hey Pensburgh! If you missed out on the blog league, or you don't like the team you have and want to get another one, well, today's you're lucky day, maggot! I'm commisioning my own fantasy hockey...

Pensburgh League A Trade Thread

Thought this might be a decent idea for our little fantasy experiment going on.

Pirates Claim Anthony Claggett

25-year-old righty from the Yankees' AAA team, according to the link. Anyone have a scouting report on this kid?

Game 3 tonight. Chance for Lynchburg to take the title! (Also, McClouth?)

Game 3 tonight. Chance for Lynchburg to take the title! (Also, McClouth?)

Heatley Traded (for real)

Hallelujah! Deal is Heatley/5th rounder for Cheechoo/Michalek/2nd rounder (no LA). Seems like a reasonable deal, but let's see what the Pensburgh take on it is.

Roster Moves

Karstens and Veal activated, and Bixler, Hacker, and R. Diaz called up. Any surprises here? Also, do we expect to see Clement called up in a few days' time?
