Good look at recruiting with some quotes from Mack Brown. Helps you understand why he chooses the people he does.

An interesting comment by Brown was that they look for the recruit to have strong parenting (used to only want recruits from two-parent households).

Burnt Orange Nation Hotels for TX/OU

I may be getting on the hotel train a little late, but I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for hotels for the RRS.

I'm a student, so obviously I'm not looking for the Ritz.  Last year we stayed at a friend's house in Plano but it was a painful commute to the game.  Are there any places with a decent location for easy access to both the Friday night activities as well as the game?

Thanks

Burnt Orange Nation Student Season Tickets

Any students have any concrete date on which the student season tickets go on sale for football season?  I remember hearing about them around July last year.  I also found out through facebook.  Texas athletics has not been on the ball in communication in all the years I've been here.

Also, does anybody have any advice for getting the best seats?  It seems like seniors (not 5th-years) with small groups get the best spots.  I'm sure one of you old, wise alums have some advice on the subject.

Burnt Orange Nation Kinne to transfer

Guess this is no big surprise.  Here's the link.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas redshirt freshman QB G.J. Kinne has elected to transfer, he confirmed Friday. Kinne will depart the Longhorns program after one season, but has not yet determined where he will transfer.

"I chose the best school at what was the end of a very successful, but difficult high school career," Kinne said. "I have definitely become a better quarterback with the help of one of the most knowledgeable offensive coaches in college football, Greg Davis. However, the quarterback position is unique in terms of playing time, and I have to find a program that best fits my skills.

Burnt Orange Nation Could somebody explain these steroid hearings to me?

Would anyone with any legal knowhow care to comment on these questions?

How did these steroid hearing make it to Congress?

Why do people agree to come to them?  Are they subpoenaed?  If so, how is that even legal?  What business does Congress have with this issue?

If it's drug dealing Congress is concerned about, shouldn't that be a state matter?

Burnt Orange Nation J'Covan Brown suspended

Statesman link

Brown has been suspended for more than a month from his team at Port Arthur Memorial High after receiving a technical foul during a game.

Johnny Ray Brown said his son did not sign in November because "he was trying to get some things done," including qualifying academically for eligibility as a freshman. Brown has yet to qualify.

Johnny Ray Brown said he considers Henderson a friend but added, "We did some things he asked us to do. J'Covan took an anger management class. Then Terrul still turned his back on J'Covan."

Sounds like a project.

Burnt Orange Nation Curtis Brown recovery?

Can somebody fill me in on what happened when Curtis Brown recovered that kickoff?  Was it intentional?  I was a little distracted when it happened and forgot to DVR the game.

Burnt Orange Nation Happy Birthday JD Lewis

Today, July 19th, JD Lewis celebrates his 22nd birthday.  I was wondering if anybody else was doing anything tonight to help commemorate the occasion?

I wonder which day will be more fun, today or the game against USC this spring where he inexplicably played the last couple minutes.

Burnt Orange Nation Sad Day-Coach Hep Dies

IU football coach Hoeppner dies

It's a sad day today as one of my favorite coaches in College Football, Coach Terry Hoeppner finally lost his battle with brain cancer.  I grew up in Indiana and I have as many good friends going to IU (including one WR on the team) as I do UT so I've been about as close to the program as a person in Texas could be.  My favorite memory of Coach Hep was when he called the IU Football program "a shooting rocket" (haha) after they beat Iowa last year.  I've always had a lot of respect for a coach willing to get out and fire up an apathetic student fan base.  I especially loved him unabashedly referring to a stadium with such pitiful attendance as "The Rock."

Burnt Orange Nation hey Applewhite is my homeboy

Sorry BON, this isn't sports related, but it's still somewhat UT related, no?

Anyway, Applewhite is my homeboy, your dad is Prof. Willson?!  That's awesome.  Not awesome...very awesome.  I have him for OChem II right now and it's a privilege for me to be in his class.  He's one of the only professors I've had at UT who really seems to enjoy/care about his teaching and that makes it very enjoyable to go to class.  I have his final tomorrow night.  I heard he was retiring soon? Confirm/Deny?  I was hoping to have him for Fun. Lab, which evidently he teaches as well.

Burnt Orange Nation Connor's Mom To PB/AW:

So I made the trek up to OU today with occasional BON'er longhornroadtrip and a couple other guys. The game was nice, Sooners are hicks, we got a couple memorable stories to tell about the fans, but one of the best parts of the trip is when we hung around at the end to get pictures down near the court.

We saw two ladies wearing burnt orange. After having them take pictures of us, they introduced themselves as Connor and JD's mothers.

After talking to us for a while, Connor's mom (who is very nice, by the way), asked us if we read any Longhorn blogs. Ryan heads up www.longhornroadtrip, and we talked about that, but the real kicker from the conversation was when Mrs. Atchley brought up 'that Burnt Orange Nation site.' I confirmed my love for the site, and she gave me a funny look.

So like any good mother looking to give the bully a "good talking to," she told me to tell you guys she wanted to meet you.

Anyway, just relaying the message.

Ok. So I'm going to take a leap of faith and say that Durant makes the jump to the NBA after we win the national championship the season ends.

So what team do we want our boy going to?

Burnt Orange Nation BONer in SI...

Not a very big deal, but evidently UT now has "superfans" for basketball, too.

Front page picture.

In the slide show

I'm the one holding the sign.

"SUPERFANS: Actually Durant is french for "during," but we can't blame UT fans for their excitement."

Burnt Orange Nation Matt Hill on crutches

A good friend of mine (who is also a BON reader) told me that he saw Matt Hill on crutches today in the six pack.

He had long pants on so we couldn't see if it was an ankle or a knee.

If this is old news then my bad.

Burnt Orange Nation Does Texas Recruit Jucos/Prep Schools?

I was looking through the new Rivals rankings today, and I noticed that a couple of the Tennessee five-stars were Juco and Prep School recruits.  I took a look at the Juco/PS rankings and didn't see Texas on the page.  I did, however, see quite a smattering of Nebraska in the Juco rankings, and a strong SEC/ACC presence in the prep school rankings (Location of the prep schools, maybe?).

Didn't Nebraska have some argument with Texas about recruiting those kind of players when the Big XII formed?  Does Texas not recruit from those places traditionally or is it just this year that this has happened?

Anyone care to elaborate on the level of play they've seen with Juco/Prep School players in College?  The two that pop to my mind are Chad Johnson and Steve Smith, but I don't recall hearing their name too much in College.

Burnt Orange Nation The Great White Hope

Does anyone know if everyone's favorite speedy white guy, Jordan Shipley, will be holding the kicks again this coming year?  I always thought it was a bit odd that he had that duty, and I was thinking it was his job just because of all the injuries he's had in the past couple seasons.

If not injuries, then do you think the reason they have him in there is to give UT a viable fake-kick option?

Burnt Orange Nation Recruit letdowns

Watching the Emerald Bowl and Lorenzo Booker raised a question for me:  Which heralded recruits failed to live up to their billing at Texas?  I only just recently moved to Texas so I haven't had the opportunity to follow recruiting for any more than 2 years.  What "failed" recruits pop out in your mind?  You know...besides that whole Vince Young fiasco.

Burnt Orange Nation Do we miss RT?

The general consensus following Ramonce Taylor's dismissal (and in the season previews) seemed to be that he was a talented athlete, but no, we would not miss him.  Going into the season, we knew we had a talented aresenal with Sweed, Charles, S. Young, et al., and midway into the season, we can't say that we've had a lack of production.  However, watching aorist's Ramonce Taylor highlight video (who's got the herb?) reminded me how many explosive plays he brought to the offense.  So, with seven games of hindsight under our belt, do we miss RT?

Burnt Orange Nation John Mackovich

I haven't been in Texas for very long.  I moved to Austin in the summer of 2003 and never payed a tremendous amount of attention to Texas football until my freshman year at UT in 2005.

That being said, I don't know much about Texas football before 2003.  I hear plenty about Chris Simms, Major Applewhite, and Ricky Williams, but I guess what I'm most interested about is the post-DKR, pre-Mack Brown years of Texas football.  I very rarely hear anything about this 'era,' besides vague references to empty stands in '98 by Mack and a loss to Rice in '94 by my friends at Rice.

Is there much to be said about these years?  Was the excitement and interest for Texas football anything like it is now?  Is it as much of a 'dark age' as I am perceiving it to be?  I titled the diary John Mackovich (I don't know if I spelled that correctly) because he is one of the few things I can identify by name about these years.  What was he like as a coach?  How was the program under him?  Anybody care to enlighten a trasnplant?
