Salary vs. Performance
Cool interactive board by Ben Fry that shows team's salaries in relation to how they performed last season. The sliding scale at the top allows you to see how they progressed during the season too.
Mo's Approval Rating -- Revised
Thanks for the input from everyone else on the previous post! Instead of simply approving or disapproving of Mo's job thus far, I would like to see the rating from 1 to 5 that people here think he has done. I know people like a lot of the things he has done but yet dislike other things.
Please feel free to comment on why you gave him the grade, and some of the moves he has made that you approve or disapprove of.
Hitting or Pitching
All this talk about trading Ankiel for a starter got me to thinking, which is more valuable -- hitting or pitching. I realize that in the Cardinals case pitching would definitely be more valuable.
However, I am pretty new to all the sabermetrics and was just curious as which one would be more beneficial: 1. A league average rotation and bullpen with an above average lineup or 2. A league average lineup with an above average rotation and bullpen. I've heard both sides of the argument but I would like to know if anyone could run the numbers to see which one is more valuable. I would also like to hear any examples of the two scenarios.
Four Man Rotation?
I was thinking a little last night and wondering about the possibility of a four man rotation for the Cardinals. As crazy as this may sound, considering a lot of you who think the whole rotation would be injured by May, think about it for a minute. As of right now, we have Carp (thinking positive), Wainwright, Lohse, and Wellemeyer that would make up that rotation. Instead of having Pineiro pitch every five days, the rotation would start over at our ace again, and the Cards would spread out his starts over the other four starters. It would allow our best starters to get more starts. With the signing of a new starter this could even be more effective. It would allow the Cards one extra man to put in possibly in the bullpen or a much needed middle infielder.
The question that arises is: Is three days enough rest for the starters? Using a four-man rotation would require a lot of changes in those pitchers' preparations and routines throughout the season, but I still think it is do-able. If the Cards keep very close watch over the pitch counts of each game and using the bullpen (which would have an extra person) earlier in games. I believe that three days rest is full rest for a pitcher at the major league level.. Mechanic problems occur from throwing late into games when the pitcher is tired. The problem is making sure that the pitch count doesn't get too high.
Just wondering if I might have a point, or if it's just a crazy far fetched idea?
