I did not like Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Like it? How could anyone like it? The wind whipped in off the lake and made summer evenings in July feel like that fruits and vegetables room at Costco; and winter afternoons in December feel like a Stalingrad. The view from every seat, every single seat, was blocked by a metal beam -- it was an architectural marvel in that way, the ballpark equivalent of that pool table where no matter where you aim the cue ball it ends up in the same place. The floor was covered in some kind of remarkable and ambiguous tacky substance that I’m entirely sure was later patented and used for the Sticky Buddy. Asbestos seemed to be leaking out of the walls, there were exposed wires everywhere, the place smelled of the kind of gasoline beer that could get you drunk if you were within a 500-foot radius. My father, of course, would buy the cheapest tickets available which meant that even though there were countless empty seats in front of us in that cavernous place, we would sit far back because to move up would be cheating*, so it would feel like we were a half mile away from the game. The place was so big and, except on the Fourth of July, so empty and so filled with ghosts that to go in there was like walking into instant sadness machine; it felt like the place was crawling with dementors from Harry Potter.
Fausto Carmona Arrested, Apparently Is Really Somebody Else
Apparently, Fausto Carmona is an alias, and his real name is Roberto Hernandez-Heredia. I'm sure there will be more to come on this story.
UPDATE: Fausto/Roberto is possibly 31, not 28. Story is still developing...

Tribe Still Collecting Relief Arms: Jeremy Accardo
Indians have signed Jeremy Accardo to a minor league deal. Throw another arm on the pile!
Cubs Get Anthony Rizzo
One first base trade option gone. I know many here were eying Anthony Rizzo as an option for the Tribe. Don't know enough about any of these players to tell whether it's a good trade for either team.
Benard on IR - English Activated from Practice Squad
Shurmur reports that Benard's season is over. What a stupid waste.
Update: ABJ reporting the Reserve/Non Football Injury list.
Kiante Tripp, a defensive lineman, added to practice squad.
Coaching staff shake-up
Per Twitter. Bench coach Tim Tolman to take player personnel job, apparently for health reasons. Sandy Alomar promoted to bench coach, leaving vacancy at first base.
My guess is that the new 1b coach will be Sarbaugh. He's done nothing but win in the minors and other teams have to be considering poaching him for their major league staff.
Crowe is Back; Tribe Now Headless
Trevor Crowe added to roster. Jerad Head DFAd to make room. Starting today in left field and batting 9th.
Trade Deadline Housecleaning Thread
Link to tweet about Giants DFA-ing Aaron Rowand. They also are jettisoning Miguel Tejada. General thread for comment and links to other player moves at the Waiver Trade Deadline. Also, Matt Diaz back to Atlanta and John Bowker to Philadelphia.
Hannahan Back, Carrasco DLed
Per Twitter. Hannahan's paternity leave is over, so he needed activated. Instead of sending down Shelley Duncan, Tribe found some elbow inflammation on Carlos Carrasco so that he could be DLed. Expect David Huff to make a start the next time the Tribe needs a fifth starter.
The Onion Strikes Again
The last line is totally killer.
Justin Germano to pitch in Korea
Per Tribe tweet. Hey, Justin - say hi to Ryan Garko for all of us when you see him, OK?
Barnes' Injury to End Season
The Columbus Dispatch reports today that LHP Scott Barnes' knee injury will end his season. Looks like the Indians won't be getting any help this year from Nobody.
LaPorta Activated, Judy Optioned to Columbus
Per Tribe tweet. LaPorta at 1b today and batting second cleanup. Asdrubal also in today's lineup.
The Power of Jensen Lewis' Robe
Jensen Lewis may be gone, but his robe has brought luck to his former teammates.
Akron Rubber Scrubbers?
The Akron Aeros are considering a name change and are running a contest, apparently in conjunction with the Beacon Journal. They have selected 15 potential names. Vote here for your choice. Some of them are, frankly, pretty ridiculous, but YMMV.
Duncan Back, Buck Sent to Columbus
Per Indians tweet.
So Long, Josh Rodriguez
Traded to the Pirates for cash considerations, per Bastian tweet. Slowly, the middle infield logjam at AAA is unsticking itself.
Alex White DLed
Per Indians tweet. Judy called up. Boo, injuries.
AL All-Stars Based Entirely on WAR
From Hardball Talk. Note the starting shortstop and center fielder.
Hagadone Promoted to Columbus
Per Bastian twitter. His b-ref page. Also, Lastoria notes Bryan Price off the DL. Aeros website notes Marty Popham also sent down to Scrappers and Berger sent down from Columbus to Akron.
How to Write an Article About the 2011 Cleveland Indians
They're leading the American League and they were supposed to be cellar dwellers. Now, your editor says you have to write an article about this surprising team in flyover country. Don't be alarmed - follow this easy guide and you'll be able to pop out your story in no time and it will look just like what everybody else is writing, so, therefore, it must be true!
How to write an article about the Cleveland Indians in 2011 if you write for a national media organization (pick 2 or 3 storylines):
- The Indians are surprising everybody (except, maybe Manny Acta).
- Cleveland is downtrodden (cite economic climate or sports disappointments or both).
- Nobody's going to the games.
- Amazingly, those poor fools actually believe they can win (silly sods!)
- Their payroll is really small but they're winning anyway .
- They blew up the team and traded away Cy Young winners.
- It won't last.
You're welcome, national media.

Bubba Bell Bids Bye Bye - Bound For Buffalo
AAA placeholder Bubba Bell now filling a place in AAA for the Mets. For those of you completists out there (you know who you are).
Yankees Claim Jess Todd
Per Hoynes tweet.
In commemoration of a very special day.
Mr. 3000
No - not Derek Jeter. John Adams. The drum guy.
Duane is almost certainly the only player of recent vintage, probably ever, to seriously consider failing a physical so that he could stay in Cleveland. He is, undoubtedly, the only person to get married in Hawaii and honeymoon in Cleveland. He is also the greatest guy in the world; there’s no better feeling than having your hero live up to all your expectations and go beyond.
Yohan Pino Sold to Blue Jays
Per Tribe official Twitter account.
Joe Smith Up, Frank Herrmann Down
Per Hoynes twitter. Chad Durbin still an Indian.
The two sides could have worked something out - by moving Indians games to sister station WBNS-FM (97.1), for example - but ratings for Cleveland games do not even match the station's standard ESPN programming.
More people listen to ESPN blowhards talking about sports than actual sporting events.
No Indians on the Radio in Columbus
Woke up this morning and looked at the sports on TV/radio schedule in the Dispatch this morning only to find out that WBNS was not carrying the game on the radio. This is not that unusual for day games - very often in the past, WBNS has not carried day games because it conflicts with their talk schedule. So I checked the rest of the weekend and found that they weren't carrying any of those, either. When I got into work, I checked their website - nothing.
So, I then checked the Indians website to doublecheck their list of radio affiliates to see if I'd missed something. Good luck trying to find the link to the radio affiliates on the new indians.com. There was a sublink on one page that linked to the page that the link was on - in other words, nothing.
I fired off an email to Dave Van Stone, the general manager of WBNS AM-FM. Here is his response:
Hi Greg -
Our contract with the Indians expired at the end of last season.
The Indians are looking for an affiliate that can provide clearance of more games than we are able to provide them.
I tweeted to Mark Shapiro asking why there was no radio affiliate list on the website and that there was no radio affiliate in Columbus. I got a nice response a few minutes later from someone with the Indians telling me that they were working on it and offering me free online radio access, which was thoughtful, and pretty good customer service. I buy the Gameday Audio anyway because I like listening to baseball games, so it would be giving me something I already have. I declined, but thanked them for the offer.
Happy Opening Day, Central Ohio. Hope you can stay by your computer and don't have to run errands. WLOH (1320 AM, Lancaster) seems to still be carrying the games, as does WMRN (1490 AM, Marion). However, these are both relatively low power stations whose signals barely carry into Franklin County, if at all.
UPDATE: Was sent this link to radio affiliates by someone in the Tribe office. It seems to be of limited utility, however, since it still lists WBNS. And, FWIW, the station that carried the games before WBNS, WMNI (920 AM), now carries the Clippers. The list also includes AM 1430 in Newark, which might carry as far as Pataskala or Reynoldsburg, maybe New Albany if the conditions are right and you have some tinfoil and paperclips to attach to your receiver antenna. So that might be another option.
