Making London Work

Every football fan knows that the NFL is pushing for a London team. They have played an NFL game in London every year since 2007. This is widely viewed as a move to warm up London for a franchise....

So my friend at UMKC is in charge of the Robotics team, and they're doing a fundraiser where they sell Chiefs tickets. These tickets are only $35 (which is an amazing deal), and are available for the following games: Bengals (November 8) Panthers (December 2) Colts (December 23) I'm personally going to get some for the Colts game. To buy some, shoot an email to info@umkcrobotics.org.

Historical Context

The Chiefs are at -13 in turnover differential. This is the only stat you need in order to explain why we're 1-3. We become the 6th team in NFL history to be -13 through the first four games, and...

7 teams in NFL history have had a -13 or worse turnover differential through week 4.

2

Most of them happened before 1970. The last one was Detroit in 1989. Most of them ended up improving their turnover differential (although the Chicago Rockets in 1948 ended up setting the record for worst turnover differential in a season).

Lots of fun stats from this game, but my favorite is that if the Eagles get less than 383 yards of...

Lots of fun stats from this game, but my favorite is that if the Eagles get less than 383 yards of offense today, then the Chiefs will almost certainly have the #1 offense in the NFL by total yards.

Since 2006, a team that ended up going to the playoffs has only lost a game in which they won the turnover margin by 3 three times. In other words, if you assume the Falcons will make the playoffs this year, they basically will never lose when getting a 3+ turnover margin in a game. (In NFL history it has only happened 48 times, although for some reason 11 of them were between 1998 and 2002. I wonder why...)

In the last 100 games where a team lost the turnover margin by 3, they were 9-90-1. Over a 16 game season, that comes out to about 1.5 wins. As long as that turnover margin doesn't become a trend, we should be fine.

So far in the preseason, our starters on offense have faced starters on 5 drives, 3 of which (60%) ended in touchdowns. Our defensive starters have faced starters on 6 drives, 2 of which (33%) ended in touchdowns (one of which started on our 38).

WalterFootball picks Rams over Chiefs

11

I actually don't think he's crazy because, as he points out, any coach who really wants to win preseason games can do it by simply playing their starters longer. I actually kind of hope they do, so we can see how our backups fair against their starters. I would love for Stanzi to light up their starting defense.

Tim Tebow Did Something. It Was Really Important.

From our friends at Turf Show Times. This is the single best piece of work I've ever seen on Tebow. It really sums up the situation perfectly.

Football Outsiders Playoff Predictions

9

It looks like they think Denver and KC have about an equal chance of making the playoffs, and looking at it they don't think the AFC West has much of a shot at a wildcard. They don't break it down by division winners and wildcard yet, but the fact that Buffalo and the Jets are more likely to make the playoffs than any other AFC West team would point that way.

Goodell Tells Teams About Relocating To LA.

10

Considering how big of an impact it makes when a team moves, this seems to get very little coverage until the deal's done. Basically, if any team can't get a needed stadium deal done, they will almost certainly move to LA because the biggest remaining obstacles to the LA stadium proposals is that they don't have a team. Currently it looks like the Raiders, Chargers, and Rams are the leading contenders to move. It's safe to say that one or two of those three teams will call LA home in the next couple years. Personally, I feel the Raiders are the most likely, but I'm hoping the Rams move. After spending three years in St. Louis, I don't think they deserve a football team, and judging by their SBNation site, a large portion of their fans are from LA.

Is it possible to trade a player in the middle of a game? For example, when we play the Colts next year, what if Pioli trades Dorsey to them in the middle of the 2nd quarter? Does he switch teams at halftime, or wait until the game is over? If he stayed on the Chiefs for the game and then switched, would he be motivated to try and win or lose? I know this would never happen, but it's interesting to think about.

Is Clutchness Real?

31

I remember arguing with some people a couple days ago about whether or not clutchness was a real thing. This Advanced NFL Stats article talks about it a little, but he says the same thing I was saying at the end of his piece. Even if it is real, it is nearly impossible to measure, and is therefore pretty useless as an analytical tool.

How Weather Affects Road Teams

1

This study shows that dome teams (i.e. Arizona) and warm weather teams (i.e. Miami) have a harder time winning road games in cold weather than teams from colder climates (i.e. Kansas City) do. So if Peyton wants to win the Super Bowl, going to a cold weather city improves his chances.

Raiders' Players Salaries

Several people have mentioned that the Raiders need to dump $22 million in the next couple weeks. Here's a site listing the cap hit for all of their players, to get an understanding on who may get cut (although I'm not sure how accurate these figures are). My guess would be Curry, Wimbley, and Henderson, and then maybe somebody else so they can afford to sign free agents.
