I asked John Sickels a few questions about prospects.
I was happy with how this turned out, thought I would spam you guys.

Wilson has oblique strain
Schulman tweets:
BREAKING NEWS: Wilson out with mild oblique strain. Will be reassessed Monday. Opening Day in doubt. I'll blog shortly.
Does anyone here use R? I'm having issues setting my axes. I've tried 'xlim' and 'ylim' but without any success. Ideally, I would like my X-axis to run from -4 to 4. I'm using the smoothscatter function as described here.
PFX: Scouting Report on Colby Lewis
Colby Lewis is a pretty cool story. I hope the Giants beat him today, but he's no pushover. I looked at some of his PFX numbers, particularly how he pitches RHBs vs. LHBs.
Lot's of sliders. Plz, no Rowand today.

Giants v. Rangers - Advanced Statistics

Here's the data table:
| Statistic | Giants | Rangers |
| UZR | 56.4 | 18.1 |
| SP FIP | 3.89 | 4.23 |
| RP FIP | 3.41 | 3.99 |
| Team K/9 | 8.2 | 7.3 |
| Team BB/9 | 3.56 | 3.41 |
| Batting Runs | -14.6 | 38.4 |
| wOBA | .318 | .333 |
| EQBRR | -8.4 | 10.4 |
For your information, batting runs are from the value portion of FanGraphs -- and they are park-adjusted, so I prefer them to the wOBA numbers, which aren't. I'm still surprised at the Giants' defense, though the Rangers aren't slackers in that regard, either.
The Giants had the best K/9 of any team in baseball this year. The EQBRR numbers are from BP, the Giants aren't a very good baserunning team (duh) and the Rangers were the #3 team in the majors this season on the basepaths.
Giants edge the Rangers in: Starting Pitching, Bullpen, Defense, and Team Pitching Strikeout-rate
Rangers edge the Giants in: Overall offense (even with park adjustments), Baserunning, and Team Pitching Walk-rate.

Q&A w/ Crashburn Alley (Giants-Phillies NLCS)
I talked with Bill Baer of Crashburn Alley and got to ask him a few questions regarding the Phillies. The Giants portion of the Q&A should be going up on CBA sometime today, too.
Q&A with Braves Blog
I did a quick Q&A about the Giants-Braves match-up with Braves blog, Capital Avenue Club. I thought I would (spam) share it.
Madison's Historic Rookie Season
Spammy, I know, but I had fun writing this and the numbers surprised me some.

Giants to stay in Richmond for the next 2 years
Not sure if this has been posted yet.
"The Giants and the franchise that was based in Norwich, Conn., before relocating to Richmond last September have been linked since 2003. The Washington Nationals apparently had some interest in moving their Double-A operation to Richmond, but stayed in Harrisburg, which is completing a $45-million ballpark renovation."
I made some Chernoff faces for every team in baseball.

Dog Days of August - Giants
Shameless. I know.
I was surprised to see how badly Freddy has been hitting this season. His career Giants batting line is pretty uninspiring. The defense is nice, though.
This doesn't include his stats -- and the HR -- from last night's game. I pulled the numbers before they were posted.

I was kind of happy with the way this graph turned out and I wanted to share. Sandoval's 2009 v. 2010 seasons by 6 stats: BB%, K%, O-Swing%, O-Contact%, ISO, BABIP. The league averages for each season are represented by the black outlines.
Trip Report: Washington, D.C. + The Giants (pics)
Hey guys. I went to my first set of games in D.C. this weekend and had a blast. I thought I'd share a few pictures and words.
The CF gate entrance to the yard.
View from Sunday's game. Sitting out along the RF line in the mezzanine.
The Nats have these really cool frame-by-frame statues near the CF entrance. This one is for Frank "Hondo" Howard, the feared D.C. slugger. Howard hit 382 career home runs. From 1968-70 he hit 44, 48, and 44 home runs for the then Washington Senators.
Huff and Rowand in the OF during Saturday night's game.
Madbum's start today. Notice the velocity. He was 90-93 for most of the first few innings. Later in the game he was upper 80s.
Poopin'
I snapped this one for Lars. RED SIX, NEVER FORGET.
Sad Bum really needs to get a new picture. :-(
Yes, this is happening.
Pilsner Urquell. Very tasty. The Nats had a decent brew selection, but I was a little bummed to not find anything hoppy.
Me and Roger both agreed, we want to be this guy. 'Orange guy', as I tentatively called him, was at the park all weekend. He was awesome. Wearing an orange jumpsuit in 100 degree weather? Gamer.
It was a very nice weekend for baseball. I met up with Roger and his wife and chatted with them for a good portion of Saturday night's game. Both were extremely nice and just very cool people. Thanks, Roger! The park was interesting. Overall, a pretty nice place but I felt it had a ton of gray overtones and nothing really fantastic architecturally.

Fun Time Waster: Finding the Best Hitter/Pitcher That Shares Your Birthday
Mucking around with BB-Ref last week I noticed that they have a Birthday Search Tool (TWSS) that allows you to search for players by birthdate. I thought it would be fun if we all searched for baseball players that share our birthdays.
Link: http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/birthdays.cgi
Here's mine, March 22.
Hitter: Glenallen Hill. I thought this was kinda funny since I always liked Hill. He was a terror on defense, but when he actually connected on a pitch, he could hit the ball tremendously far. He has the most career HR (187) on my birthdate and the highest OPS (.804) of anyone that played more than a couple of seasons. Yay, Stone Hands!
Pitcher: It's a toss-up between Dick Ellsworth (2,155.2 career IP, 100 ERA+) and Ramon Martinez (1,895.2 career IP, 106 ERA+). Ellsworth's 1963 (290.2 IP, 167 ERA+) season with the Cubs made him the best pitcher in the NL. Martinez had some good years, but nothing ever as good as that season in '63.
Plus, Martinez never had one of these cool faux-wood cards.
Advantage: Ellsworth

For oldjacket. Trying to run some numbers on Pablo and the high heater. I'm not sure I learned anything, yet, but it was good Excel practice.
You can read some other musings here: http://www.baycityball.com/2010/06/07/labwork-pablo-sandoval-and-the-high-fastball/
along with a data table with league averages.
Lincecum Pitch-Type Graphs
Hey guys, I thought I would share these since I think they are kinda neat. I've been working with some PFX data and I wanted to try and produce a graph that shows what pitch a pitcher throws by the count. I decided that Tim Lincecum would be an interesting choice to use.
The 2010 graph doesn't include his last start against Washington, when I pulled the data the game was still ongoing. Still, I think they show a pitcher that's really gotten comfortable with his changeup.
For example: In 2009 when Lincecum got 2 strikes on a batter, he was going to throw the change 35-40% of the time. This year he's expanded his changeup usage even further -- throwing it almost 50% of the time when he's got 2 strikes. I'm in the process of pulling the 2007-08 data to look at those years as well. I'll post them when I get them produced, but it might be a couple of days.

BB-Ref Adds WAR Data!
This in conjunction with the PI tool is pretty darned cool.
DeRosa *may* be closer to the DL
LOL HANK!
"That the Giants can back-date a DL trip makes a move with DeRosa more likely. If his wrist starts to feel markedly better, he still can return within a week."
It reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer is cooking the pig and it get's launched across Springfield.
[Homer and Bart are chasing the rolling rotisserie pig. It rolls through some bushes]
Homer: It's just a little dirty! It's still good, it's still good!
[the cart falls off the edge of a drainage culvert, and the pig floats down the stream]
Homer: It's just a little slimy! It's still good, it's still good!
[the pig reaches a dam at the end of the stream and plugs the drain hole. The water pressure builds up behind it, until it launches out of the hole into the air]
Homer: It's just a little airborne! It's still good, it's still good!
Bart: It's gone.
Homer: I know.
