I will be in the new stadium representing Halos Heaven on Sunday when our Angels take on the Yankers. My girlfriend is afraid I'm going to get us mugged, but the last time I saw the Angels in the Bronx in '96 I only got a few "Hey whydoncha go baaack to Anaheeeeiiim!" catcalls because of my Disney-winged Halos visor.

I think I'll leave my "If Yous A Yank, Yous A Skank" poster at home, but if anyone has any suggestions for good ways to use my time in NYC, I'd appreciate any advice from this blog (cough, cough).

Is it a true "World" Series?

During the 2002 soccer World Cup, I had a debate with a British neighbor about the validity of the term "World Series" to crown the best team in the world. My limey friend passionately argued that the WS isn't true to its name, since teams from Japan and elsewhere don't participate. I argued that the best players in the world come to MLB, and thus the WS is the championship for the teams with the best players in the world.

No matter who wins this year's World Baseball Classic, the event does bring to the forefront the fact that national teams are competitive. It's debatable whether the structure of the WBC is fair enough to determine the truly better teams, but given the competitiveness of the event in 2009 I think it's worth asking the question, "Should the World Series be renamed?"

I had never seen this series before, so I decided it might be a good way to get fired up for the season. Right now, I'm watching Inning 8.

My take: great history (especially the early years); boring self-centered recollections from (now REALLY) aging east-coast writers, actors (hi Billy Crystal) and historians; great insight into the peripheral leagues and their impact; and some fun, colorful anecdotes that have helped make baseball the crazy and profound game it is.

In this round of the great "Cool Or Lame?" game (founded by our own cupie), I ask YOU to tell me what you think of this series.

State appellate court justice David Sills stretched far and wide to show his sour grapes because he was the lone dissenter in the ruling that affirmed the Angels' name change. He reasons that because neither the California Angels nor the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have won a World Series, a new "curse of the Bambino" is upon the Angels for changing their name. God help the poor souls who rely on this man for rational judgment -- oh wait, that's ALL OF US in California. Shit.
