Scouting the news

There are few more controversial players in this year's draft than defensive back Vontae Davis. The former Illinois cornerback raises plenty of questions. Is he a cornerback or safety? Is he the second or third best corner? Does he have the work ethic to excel? He certainly did that today at the Illinois pro day. Davis ran a 4.40 40-yard dash. An official press release from Illinois said he ran a 4.35.

What perfect timing. Chip Vaughn of Wake Forest is set to visit with the Buffalo Bills. By coincidence, a scouting report on Vaughn went up last night.

The Dolphins will hold a private workout with Cincinnati defensive end Connor Barwin.

The University of Florida held its pro day today. The star was receiver Percy Harvin. However, if start reading about it, you can understand the concern teams have. Harvin's ankle is still messed up. Doug Johnson, who was throwing him passes, said because Harvin moves so fast there's not a big window to fit the ball. The Giants are working him out on special teams only. All notable factoids.

Could the Raiders be looking at California center Alex Mack? If not, they probably should in the second round. Gil Brandt reports Mack had a "sensational" workout.

Aaron Curry is keeping a diary for Sports Illustrated.

In other Aaron news, Aaron Maybin of Penn State did a good job of bulking up for the Combine. But now he's losing all the weight? Bad idea.
