If Mike Leach is free, that should at least mean an offseason of fantastic speculation about his eventual landing place, his mysterious whereabouts, and his recreational interests in unemployment. Since he’s already done Vikings and pirates, I’m guessing he’s moved on an intense study of the Mamelukes of Egypt, the ninjas of the Sahara who served the Abbasid Sultans of Cairo. But that’s just my casual, uneducated guess as an amateur Leachologist.
↵His close relationship to Maryland alum and Under Armour founder Kevin Plank has him linked to the Maryland job in the rumor mill, an oddity both because of his stated preference to be on the West Coast and because not only is Ralph Friedgen still there as head coach, but so is his head-coach-in-waiting James Franklin.
↵So there’s issues with the notion, especially with Franklin’s $1 million buyout, but let’s focus on the important thing: the mascot. If Leach brought his pass-heavy aerial attack to Maryland, earthbound Testudo simply wouldn’t do. You’d need a flying turtle, and I only know one turtle that would do: Gamera, friend to all children and protector of the Japanese nation.
