Rafael Marquez has pulled Mexico even with South Africa, unmarked for a cross from substitute Andres Guardado, which he settled at the edge of the six to beat Itumeleng Khune near post for a 79th minute equalizer.
South Africa left a cluster of Mexican players unmarked as defender Aaron Mokoena failed to move up into an advancing line. Marquez was able to settle the cross with his right foot for the easy finish, making it 1-1.
Mexico has used all of its substitutions in chasing the match, with Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Javier Hernandez having been brought in by Javier Aguirre.
The equalizer comes after South Africa had chances to put the game away, with midfielder Teko Modise missing two opportunities for a second goal.
