Alex Rodriguez Was Slightly Discombobulated Today

Alex Rodriguez homered in the bottom of the 8th in the Yankees 4-2 win Thursday afternoon over the Mariners. Or was it the bottom of the 9th? A-Rod needed a few seconds and teammate confirmation to figure it out.

“I thought I hit a much bigger home run than I actually did,” Rodriguez said. “I hit it and I looked at A.J. and Pettitte, and they weren’t jumping over the railing. At that point I felt like we probably had one half inning to play. It was pretty embarrassing.”

Okay, well, that's not so, so bad. How many times have players mixed up the inning, or how many outs there are? These are the stock-in-trade of baseball bloopers since time immemorial. At the same time, he should probably not follow up that admission by mixing up the dates with a report post-game.

“We ran into a wave of great pitching on Friday and Saturday,” he said. Then he paused. “Friday and Saturday, right? The last two nights.”
