The Twins will be without their biggest offensive threat for a critical series against the White Sox, and beyond, after the team place Justin Morneau on the 15-day DL late Thursday night. Morneau is still experiencing symptoms from a concussion suffered while breaking up a double play in Toronto on July 7.
Morneau worked out Thursday morning, and said he felt fine, but later experienced some "fogginess" and was scratched from that night's game against the While Sox. Morneau is eligible to come off the DL on July 23:
"Hopefully when it's time to come off, we'll be 100 percent ready to go without any questions," Morneau said. "What happens if I dive? What happens if I go in to break up a double play? You don't want that while you're playing.
"The good sign is that it keeps getting better every day," Morneau said. "I think we've been handling it the right way and being pretty cautious with it."
The timing of the injury is especially bad for the Twins as they are in the midst of a four-game set with the White Sox, who they are 4.5 games behind in the Central. Minnesota dropped the first game of the series on Thursday night.
Michael Cuddyer will play firstbase in Morneau's absence.
