Back on August 2nd, Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal tweaked his back. Not much was thought of it at the time - the thinking was that he'd only be out a few days - but a week later, he still hasn't played since, and the Dodgers did what they had to do in placing him on the DL.
Dodgers placed SS Rafael Furcal on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 3, with a lower back strain.
Furcal experienced discomfort during his pregame workout Tuesday, so there was no sense in continuing to waste a roster spot.
Furcal was considered eligible to pinch-hit Tuesday night, but if he's still feeling soreness, there's no good reason to rush him back. The infielder, who's batted .316/.380/.492 on the season, has been a critical player for much of the season, but this is a situation that the team can't hurry along. By placing Furcal on the DL retroactive to August 3rd, the Dodgers have allowed for Furcal to return as soon as August 18th provided he's feeling better.
In the meantime, Jamey Carroll will continue to get playing time at short. Check out more at True Blue LA.
