Pop quiz, hotshots: Who can guess which major-college athletic director ran up a six-figure travel bill over a two-year period -- yeah, forget it; we all know this is happening in Kansas, because this is apparently just what Kansas does now.
[Lew Perkins] charged the athletic department more than $150,000 from July 2008 to May 2010 for 22 flights on university-owned and leased planes, according to a review of Perkins’ travel vouchers by The Kansas City Star.↵
That figure does not include 23 other private flights Perkins took in that time — seven on boosters’ planes, four cited on Perkins’ vouchers without a cost and 12 that were reported on the expense reports of other KU staffers who joined Perkins on a trip.
This may not seem too heinous on its own merits, but file it in with our running tally of the Jayhawks' parade of recent hilarious scrapes (that in the past year alone included football-vs.-basketball team fisticuffs, the discovery of a massive ticket-scalping operation, and the blackmail of the AD himself), and a clear picture emerges, a picture captioned thusly: Lew Perkins has the greatest job on earth.
