Chargers LB Shawne Merriman Will 'Almost Certainly Miss' Next Preseason Game

Chargers LB Shawne Merriman reported to the team for the first time on Monday after refusing to sign his one-year restricted free agent tender for the first two weeks of training camp.

Training camp is nearing its end for the Chargers and it looks like they'll be continuing on without Merriman.

Kevin Accee of the San Diego Union Tribune reports Merriman will "almost certainly miss" the Chargers preseason game on Saturday due to an old Achilles' injury that flared up recently.

Merriman says the injury has troubled him "on and off for years" and that rest is the only solution.

However, the nature of it being recurring is troubling to the Chargers, especially considering Merriman missed the final 15 games of the 2008 season following reconstructive knee surgery and was limited by various injuries (primarily a foot but also the Achilles’) in 2009.

Merriman's injury history is part of the reason the Chargers haven't offered him a long-term contract.
