Stephen Strasburg Leaves Game With Apparent Elbow Injury

Washington rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg suffered an apparent injury in his pitching elbow during the fifth inning of the Nationals' game at the Philadelphia Phillies today.

Strasburg was putting together another very good outing, with six strikeouts and only two hits allowed, when he appeared to hurt his elbow during his 56th pitch. He shook his elbow while grimacing after the pitch, and he was summarily removed from the game.

If this injury lands Strasburg on the disabled list, it's unlikely he'll return to the team before 2011; with only 39 games left on the Nationals' schedule and no prospect for postseason play, there wouldn't be any incentive for the Nationals to hurry their prized righty back from the injury--especially since Strasburg went on the DL just last month with shoulder inflammation.

Stay tuned to this StoryStream and our Nationals blog, Federal Baseball, for the latest updates on Strasburg's arm.
