Caleb’s Posse sat well back of the early leaders, made a big move on the turn, and unleashed a tremendous late kick in the lane to easily win the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Preakness winner Shackleford led briefly but couldn’t hold off the winner. He finished in second. Long-shot Tres Borrachos finished third to round out the trifecta.
The Factor set the early pace but faded badly at the top of the stretch.
Trained by Donnie Von Hemmel and ridden by Rajiv Marach, Caleb’s Posse is a three-year-old son of Posse.
The win by Caleb's Posse was the third by a horse breaking from the post eight on the day. Afleet Again (Marathon) and Regally Ready (Turf Sprint) also won from post eight, but on different surfaces.
