Week 9 NFL odds: Chiefs vs. Chargers

The Chargers give their largest spread of the season, 7.5, to the Chiefs this week

Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

For a team that scored six points in Cleveland on Sunday, the Chargers are giving a whopping 7.5 points to the Chiefs this week. Though the line clearly reflects the struggles of a 1-6 Kansas City team, the 3-4 Chargers haven't played like world-beaters.

The line may also reflect the teams' meeting in Week 4, when the Chargers handily covered a 2-point spread in a 37-20 victory that saw San Diego record its second-highest point total of the season. Still, this is the largest line for the Chargers since they covered as six-point favorites to Tennessee in Week 2, when they scored 38 points.

San Diego outperformed the spread in three of their first four match ups, including the game in Kansas City, but has failed to do so in their last three games, including their recent outright loss to the Browns 7-6 on Sunday. The Chiefs haven't fared much better against the spread, going just 2-5, with their lone in-game victory coming against the Saints in overtime.

The total of 42.5 represents question marks on the offensive side for both teams. The Chargers could only muster two field goals against Cleveland, and Kansas City's quarterback carousel has undermined any faith in their ability to score points. They have scored just over ten points per game in their last three.
