The third World Baseball Classic will be played next spring, and longtime Major League Baseball manager Joe Torre will helm Team USA.

Team USA didn't fare well in either of the first two World Baseball Classics.

In 2006, the Buck Martinez-managed Statesians finished sixth after losing all three of their games -- against Japan, Mexico, and South Korea -- in the second round of the tournament.

In 2009, the Davey Johnson-managed U.S. squad did reach the semifinals but lost to Japan, which ultimately won its second straight championship.

Joe Torre most recently managed the Los Angeles Dodgers, from 2008 through 2010. Torre first managed in the major leagues in 1977, with the Mets. After stints as skipper of the Braves and Cardinals, Torre took over as New York Yankees manager in 1996 and guided that club to 12 straight postseason appearances and four World's Championships before leaving after the 2007 season.
