Rays DH Luke Scott has been dealing with back stiffness for a time. At first it seemed like a day-to-day concern, and it gave the Rays a chance to see more of Hideki Matsui, which is something they wanted to do. But Scott's slow recovery became something of a problem, and now he's getting a mandatory rest to heal up.
From the Twitter:
Luke Scott placed on DL after the game due to back stiffness retro to 6/9.Corresponding roster move will follow prior to Friday's game.

Scott expects to be back after the minimum amount of time, so that tells you something about the severity. He hasn't started a game since June 5, although he pinch-hit on June 8, which is why this DL stint is retroactive to June 9 instead of June 6. Matter of days. Basically inconsequential.
Matsui will fill Scott's role until he's healthy. Scott started the season strong, posting a .913 OPS in April, but since then he's posted a .587 OPS in 32 games, so he'll be missed only a little bit. And again, he won't be missed for long.
