Between May 17, 2011 and June 11, 2012, Brian Roberts played in a total of zero major-league baseball games. He was dealing with the after-effects of a significant concussion, and as we've all come to learn, recovery from concussions is unpredictable. Roberts re-joined the Orioles on June 12 and batted 3-for-4. His luck seemed to be turning. Now he's going on the disabled list once again.
Fortunately, if it's any consolation, the problem now is just a simple groin strain. Eduardo Encina:
The Orioles are placing second baseman Brian Roberts on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain, manager Buck Showalter said before Tuesday's game against the Mariners.
Roberts missed Monday night's game with soreness, and now he's being given an extended rest. Groin injuries can nag if you don't let them heal all the way, and maybe Roberts is something of a slow healer. But better a groin strain than anything having to do with his past concussion problems. Roberts should make a full and predictable recovery from this injury.
Robert Andino will take care of the duties at second base in Roberts' absence, and Xavier Avery has been recalled from the minors. Roberts has batted 12-for-66 without an extra-base hit.
