The Calgary Flames have claimed goaltender Joey MacDonald off waivers from the Detroit Red Wings, per multiple reports.

The Flames have been struggling to shore up the goaltending situation this season as stalwart Miikka Kiprusoff struggled before going on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Before his injury, the veteran netminder had a 3.24 goals-against average and .870 save percentage with the Flames falling to No. 28 in the NHL in goals-allowed.

Touted prospect Leland Irving was looked upon to play in Kiprusoff's place and struggled in two starts for the Flames, allowing eight goals and managing just a .879 save percentage while recording one win and one loss.

MacDonald has seen limited NHL action during his career but seemed to find a solid spot as Jimmy Howard's backup in Detroit. In 101 NHL games, MacDonald has a .903 save percentage and 3.04 GAA. MacDonald is expected to back up Kiprusoff, who is currently slated to return from IR on Wednesday against the Dallas Stars.
