Falling Sky grabbed the lead right from the start, turned back a challenge from Speak Logistics as he came off the far turn, and then held off a strong finish by Dynamic Sky to win the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Post time favorite My Name Is Michael, making his first-career start on a dirt surface, rallied from the back of the pack to finish a distant third at the wire.
The rider of Speak Logistics filed an objection against the winner after Speak Logistics appeared to check coming off the far turn. The objection was rejected and Falling Sky was declared the official winner. While Speak Logistics did appear to pull up slightly on the turn, the video evidence clearly indicated there was plenty of racing room for both colts and Falling Sky hadn't impeded or fouled Speak Logistics. Additionally, Speak Logistics faded badly in the stretch as the winner was clearly the best.
Falling Sky is a 3-year-old colt by Lion Heart out of a Sea Hero mare (Sea Dragoness), trained by John Terranova and ridden by Luis Saez. The Davis is the first graded stakes victory for Falling Sky. The Tampa Bay Derby on March 9 is likely the next race for Falling Sky on his road to the 2013 Kentucky Derby.
