The MEAC men's basketball tournament started on Monday with four of the the ten teams playing in first round action. The two favorites, the No. 4 Savannah St. Tigers and the No. 5 Morgan St. Bears, both took care of business and won their first round games.
Savannah State opened the tournament, defeating the No. 13 Md.-Eastern Shore Hawks 59-44. Deven Williams had a big performance, shooting 10-13 from the field and 6-7 from behind the arc en route to a career-high 26 points. Savannah State shot well as team, sinking 51 percent of their attempted shots.
Morgan State had a more difficult time, but eventually dispatched the No. 12 S. Carolina St. Bulldogs 61-52. The Bulldogs actually led the Bears 32-29 at half, but Morgan State played much better over the final 20 minutes to pull away from South Carolina State.
Morgan State and Savannah State will play each other on Thursday, March 14. The two teams will play at The Scope in Norfolk, VA, and the game will start at 8 p.m. ET. Click here to view the full tournament bracket.
