2014 Sochi Olympic snowboarding results: Shaun White fails to capture gold

Team USA fails to medal in snowboard halfpipe following a series of crashes.

Cameron Spencer

Shaun White took to the mountain aiming to become the first male athlete from Team USA to win three consecutive gold medals, and was unable to three-peat with a solid second run that failed to make the podium.

The night started inauspiciously for White, who bombed out on the first run with two crashes on difficult techniques. He was sitting in 11th out of 12 places following the first run and it It put the pressure on his final trip down the mountain to unseat Ayumu Hirano who posted a big score of 90.75 in the first run to lead the field.

It was a rough run all-around for Team USA, with Danny Davis and Gregory Bretz also failing to land jumps that pushed them back in the leaderboard. If anyone was going to make the podium they needed to be near-perfect after the wait.

Enter Iouri Podladtchikov of Switzerland. He was in third place following the first run and lay down a huge score of 94.75, the highest of the day outside of White's qualifying run. It ensured that if the American veteran was going to capture gold he'd need to go big and post one of his best runs at the Olympic level.

White had the evening's final run, the stage was set for a dramatic finish -- but it didn't come through. He finished with a big score of 90.25, but it wasn't enough to make the podium.
