California Chrome will try to become the first horse in 36 years to win the Triple Crown when it runs at the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 7 in Elmont, New York.
At the Preakness on Saturday, the favored California Chrome won by a 1½ lengths over Social Inclusion and, with a time of 1:54.84, had the fastest Preakness time since 2007.
The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978, and California Chrome is the 13th horse in the 36 years since to win both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, the first two legs. The last such horse was I'll Have Another in 2012, but he was scratched one day before the Belmont with tendonitis.
The Belmont Stakes at 1½ miles is the longest of the three Triple Crown races. The 2014 Belmont Stakes has a purse of $1.5 million and will be televised by NBC and NBC Sports Network.
