Belmont Stakes 2014 odds: California Chrome losing steam on sports books?

New, comments

California Chrome is still the odds-on favorite to win the Belmont and horse racing's Triple Crown, but recent offerings from sports books suggest that confidence in the horse has fallen since the morning line's release.

Update: Tonalist wins, denies California Chrome Triple Crown

With six straight victories heading into Saturday's Belmont Stakes, California Chrome is perhaps the rightful favorite to win and secure horse racing's first Triple Crown since 1978. As we know from several failed Triple Crown bids, however, winning the Belmont even after strong victories at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes isn't easy. The latest odds perhaps reflect some disillusionment at large.

On Thursday, Bovada pegged California Chrome at near-even 10/11 odds to win, despite a more bullish 3/5 morning line. Sportsbook.ag (via NJ.com) is apparently in relative agreement with Bovada, giving the horse 10/13 odds in its most recent offering.

California Chrome's slide was coupled with confidence that Wicked Strong could play spoiler. Wicked Strong (6/1 on the morning line) was given 4/1 odds by Sportsbook.ag, which easily makes him the next-biggest favorite to win the Belmont. He was followed by Ride On Curlin (8/1, 12/1 on the morning line), Tonalist (10/1, 8/1 on the morning line) and Commanding Curve (10/1, 15/1 on the morning line).

Still, the odds favor California Chrome to win against the field. Of course, they favored Smarty Jones and Big Brown, too. Both horse were 1-5 favorites, according to OddsShark, before finishing second and DNF in 2004 and 2008, respectively.
