Manny Pacquiao faces lawsuit, possible discipline over shoulder injury

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Manny Pacquiao lost a unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather in the richest fight in boxing history on Saturday, and now a shoulder injury suffered before the match could end up with consequences for Pacquiao beyond just the loss.

The Nevada Athletic Commission could discipline Pacquiao for checking "no" on a questionnaire from the organization before Friday's weigh in asking whether or not he was injured, per the Associated Press:

Pacquiao's promoter put out a statement on behalf of the fighter late Monday afternoon saying that the injury was disclosed to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which approved the use of an anti-inflammatory shot for the fight. But USADA was only a third party to the fight, charged only with testing the fighters for banned substances in training and the night of the bout.

"We had no medical information, no MRIs, no documents," said Travis Tygart, who heads the USADA. "It was not an anti-doping issue. The real question is why his camp checked 'no' on the disclosure. Either they made a terrible mistake to not follow the rules or they were trying not to give information to the other side. I'm not sure there's a middle ground."

Pacquiao suffered a "significant tear" in his right shoulder in training for the fight against Mayweather, and is expected to miss nine to 12 months after upcoming surgery.

And for getting in the ring at all for the event, which cost as much as $99.95 on pay-per-view to watch, two Nevada residents have decided to sue Pacquiao and promoter Top Rank, saying consumers were ripped off because Pacquiao's camp tried to hide his injury, per Bloomberg News:

"The case is frivolous and we expect it to be dismissed in due course," Dan Petrocelli, a lawyer for Las Vegas-based Top Rank, said in a phone interview.

Pacquiao is expected to undergo his procedure later this week.
