IK Enemkpali and Geno Smith got into an altercation that resulted in Smith suffering a broken jaw and Enemkpali being released by the Jets on Tuesday. The dispute that led to all of that was about $600 Enemkpali said Smith owed him, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
According to the report, Enemkpali purchased Smith a $600 plane ticket to attend his football camp in July. Smith, however, did not end up attending after a person close to him was killed in a motorcycle accident. Enemkpali reportedly asked Smith to pay for the unused plane ticket, which Smith agreed to do. Only that never happened and the two got into a dispute in the locker room about it on Tuesday.
While complete details of the incident are still unknown, it ended with Enemkpali punching Smith and breaking his jaw. Smith will now require surgery and could miss up to 10 weeks. The Jets released Enemkpali following the incident. He was scheduled to earn a base salary of $510,000 in 2015, according to Over the Cap.
Enemkpali apologized after being released, saying he and Smith "let our frustration get the best of us."
